A skills competition is a series of tests designed by
industry experts that focus on the highest UK and
International standards. Individuals and in some
cases, teams, are challenged to compete against
the best in their region and ultimately the UK. The
competitors are marked against a rigorous frame-
work that meet the NAS quality assurance standards.

Competition activity in schools
Skills competition activity is a way of inspiring and
engaging young learners by raising the status of
skills and vocational programs for school-age learners across schools and colleges.
Through this, learners will be able to develop a
deeper understanding of vocational skills by linking
their learning to the world of work. We encourage
schools, colleges and training providers working
with learners at Key Stage 4 (14 – 16) to think
about embedding vocational skills into their curriculum planning and delivery.

Regional and national competitions –
Levels 2, 3 and 4
Skills competition activity is a great way for
teachers, lecturers and training providers to
create a real buzz in the classroom, workshop or workplace; and to motivate learners
to constantly improve their skills. Once learners see what they are capable of, their confidence will grow and they’ll want to achieve
more, increasing their employability and
helping them to advance further in their
careers.
It’s not only individual learners who will
benefit from having skills competition activity
embedded within the curriculum and training
programmes. By nurturing individual talent,
you will be helping to increase the overall
levels of attainment within your organisation,
and raising the quality of teaching within
your school, college or training facility. And
that could also be good news when it comes
to your OFSTED inspection.
‘Inspiring excellence’ is a guide, commissioned by the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) and produced by the Learning
and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS). It
provides practical approaches to integrating
skills competition activity within teaching,
training and learning, establishing competitions as an important part of learners’ experience. The guide is available on the resources hub: worldskillsuk.org/resourceshub
