Breadfruit is susceptible to several diseases that limit its export potential and growth. Fruit rots can be reduced by removing diseased fruits from trees and not allowing fruits to ripen on the tree or rot on the ground. A root rot called Phellinus noxius is also a serious problem, especially in areas of recently cleared forest, and can affect the roots and trunk of breadfruit trees. Breadfruit is also a host for fruit flies, which currently limits the export of fresh breadfruit fruits.
