An Investment in Our Future: Expanding Horizons through UCLA ScholarshipsMikeZhang32
A college education can change how people see the world, expand their potential, and provide a new sense of purpose. It is one of the most reliable accelerators of upward socioeconomic mobility. Unfortunately, many students are being left behind because of the rising costs of higher education.
UCLA stands apart in our commitment to providing opportunity for all. As the leading elite institution for enrolling low- and middle-income students and ensuring they graduate with little or no student debt, UCLA surpasses its peers in providing students the path to a better future. Scholarships make this possible.

It notes that the program awarded 5 campus-based and 10 fully online scholarships in 2017, receiving over 70 applications. The selection process led to a welcome day in September 2017. As of January 2018, the program had a 90% completion rate and 80% continuation rate among participants, who also reported a strong sense of belonging. Moving forward, the initiative plans to offer 5 new scholarships, 25 scholarships for an online learning platform, and begin a research program on the subject. It concludes by thanking all those involved and announcing a related conference in Dublin in 2019.

This document discusses the rising costs of textbooks and their negative impact on student access and success. It notes that textbook prices have increased 812% since 1978, far outpacing inflation, and that high costs often lead students to not purchase required books or take fewer courses. The document advocates for open textbooks, which are freely accessible online and can be legally adapted and distributed, as a way to significantly reduce costs for students while maintaining quality. It provides several examples of universities and states that have implemented open textbook programs, finding improved access and equal or better student outcomes compared to traditional textbooks.

This document discusses open educational practices and resources. It notes that higher education often replicates existing power structures and barriers to access. The rising costs of textbooks and tuition create financial barriers for many students. Open educational resources (OER) can help address these issues by providing free and openly licensed educational materials. Research shows that using OER can improve student outcomes like course completion rates and grades, while lowering costs. The document advocates for open practices in teaching and learning that promote social justice and access to knowledge creation.

Open educational resources (OER) are presented as an alternative that can help reduce costs while maintaining or improving educational outcomes. The document outlines several OER initiatives and provides data showing the cost savings and performance benefits they have achieved. It argues that open pedagogy using OER can enhance learning through practices like collaboration, peer review, and communicating to broad audiences.
Serving from Scratch: Developing a Global Education Course for Goodswujcik
With the pressure to globalize curricula in support of greater learning opportunities, teachers can be easily intimidated by starting from square one or frequently inundated with ideas and issues to incorporate into a global classroom. By creating and implementing (from scratch!) a framework centered on human rights and globalization, achieving global learning can be both manageable and meaningful. This presentation offers effective strategies and perspectives on structuring a global curriculum and classroom that allows for engagement with global issues and a skills-based understanding of news media, research, and writing. What’s more, by integrating service-learning into distinct moments of the curriculum, students practice problem-solving and engage in real-world solutions for global issues. This presentation will also offer ways to easily incorporate service-learning into the classroom, as well as suggestions for resources and readings to undergird coursework.
The document summarizes the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program, which prepares students for success in higher education and life in a global society. Key points include that the IB program is offered in over 2,300 schools worldwide and develops skills like critical thinking, research, and global awareness. Studies show IB students outperform peers on assessments, have higher college acceptance and graduation rates, and are more likely to attend graduate school. The IB curriculum incorporates theory of knowledge, an extended essay, creativity/action/service activities, and externally assessed exams to provide a rigorous and well-rounded education.
It Takes a Village: Building a Support System for Diversity AbroadCIEE
Racial/ethnic diversity in study abroad increased 10 percent from 2004 to 2014. Despite the increase, study abroad continues to fall low on students of color’s priority list. Irrespective of their rationale for not going, students of color continue to receive fewer messages that study abroad is worthwhile. To fill this gap, panelists in this session will argue that faculty involvement – particularly faculty of color– in the planning process and while on-site is imperative. The inclusion will allow students to see themselves reflected in study abroad programs and may increase the likelihood that students will participate. This session will feature multiple perspectives to demonstrate the important ways to utilize faculty in the effort to increase student of color participation.
The document discusses using international sources and problem-based learning to develop students' global competence. It recommends exposing students to world issues through blogs, newspapers and literature from other countries to increase cultural understanding. Problem-based learning projects that incorporate international texts on global issues can help students recognize our shared humanity. The document provides examples of credible international sources and initiatives that facilitate global problem-based learning, as well as guidance on designing such projects and using social media for students to take local, national or global action.
University of Colorado system OER CollaborativeRajiv Jhangiani
This document provides an overview of open educational practices and resources from Rajiv Jhangiani. It discusses how education can promote social justice and activism. It highlights the barriers high costs pose for many students and how open educational resources can help address the issue of affordability. Assessing the benefits of Blended Learning in Higher Education.
Recent research from the Office for Students (OfS) highlighted the positive aspects of blended learning in higher education. In their 2022 report, OfS stated 79% of UK university students were satisfied with blended learning. Furthermore, the combination of in-person and online teaching and learning in higher education enables flexibility in physical attendance and allows greater accessibility for students. This supports students who have caring responsibilities and those in need of reasonable adjustments where exclusive physical or virtual attendance may adversely impact them. Blended learning has been further identified as a new way of bridging the gap in the higher education system by engaging better with underrepresented students.
However, OfS found that 1 in 5 students in 2022 reported dissatisfaction with blended learning. One reason for dissatisfaction is the worry of ‘content overload’ on some courses where some students reported receiving more content online than is manageable within the working week. The overloading risks reduction in course quality and student satisfaction that should be at the heart of students journeys in higher education. This highlights the need for conversations around blended learning to understand the ways it can be improved to better support both staff and students.
Assessing the Benefits of Blended Learning in Higher Education brings together key stakeholders in higher education to learn how to deliver blended learning to maximise the benefit for students and staff and create a more productive, inclusive, and fair environment.
