13 OTHER COUNTRIES IN ASIA, AFRICA, AND THE AMERICAS.

PERCENT OF WHOM ARE WOMEN, AND THAT IT REACHES MORE THAN
126 MILLION PEOPLE WITH ITS SERVICES. THE ORGANISATION IS
PARTLY SELF-FUNDED THROUGH A NUMBER OF SOCIAL ENTERPRISES
THAT INCLUDE A DAIRY AND FOOD PROJECT, A CHAIN OF RETAIL
HANDICRAFT STORES CALLED AARONG, SEED AND AGRO, AND

• BRAC IS ONE OF THE LARGEST NGOS INVOLVED IN PRIMARY EDUCATION
IN BANGLADESH. AS OF THE END OF 2012, IT HAD MORE THAN 22,700
NON-FORMAL PRIMARY SCHOOLS WITH A COMBINED ENROLMENT OF
670,000 CHILDREN. ITS SCHOOLS CONSTITUTE THREE-QUARTERS OF ALL
NGO NON-FORMAL PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN THE COUNTRY.
• BRAC'S EDUCATION PROGRAMME PROVIDES NON-FORMAL PRIMARY
EDUCATION TO THOSE LEFT OUT OF THE FORMAL EDUCATION SYSTEM,
ESPECIALLY POOR, RURAL, OR DISADVANTAGED CHILDREN, AND DROP-
OUTS.ITS SCHOOLS ARE TYPICALLY ONE ROOM WITH ONE TEACHER AND
NO MORE THAN 33 STUDENTS. CORE SUBJECTS INCLUDE MATHEMATICS,
SOCIAL STUDIES AND ENGLISH. THE SCHOOLS ALSO OFFER
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES.THEY INCENTIVISE SCHOOLING BY
PROVIDING FOOD, ALLOWING FLEXIBLE LEARNING HOURS, AND
CONFERRING SCHOLARSHIPS CONTINGENT ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE.
• BANGLADESH HAS REDUCED THE GAP BETWEEN MALE AND FEMALE
ATTENDANCE IN SCHOOLS.THE IMPROVEMENT IN FEMALE ENROLLMENT,
WHICH HAS LARGELY BEEN AT THE PRIMARY LEVEL, IS IN PART
ATTRIBUTABLE TO BRAC. ROUGHLY 60% OF THE STUDENTS IN THEIR
SCHOOLS ARE GIRLS.

পরীক্ষািূেে েিমসূচীর সফেত্ার হার ৯০%।
১৯৯৭ সাকে ১ি মেণী মথকে ৫ি মেণী পর্যন্ত ৪বছর
মিোিী উপানুষ্ঠাকনে প্রাথকিে ক ক্ষা চােু েকর। ২০০০

AFTER CLASSES. BRAC HAS NAMED
THIS INITIATIVE ‘SHIKKHA TARI’ WHICH
LITERALLY MEANS THE BOAT OF
EDUCATION.

BOAT SCHOOLS TO BREAK DOWN THE
BARRIERS THAT CHILDREN FACE TO

PRONE AND REMOTE RURAL AREAS,
WHERE HOUSEHOLDS ARE
CONSTRAINED DUE TO CHALLENGING
GEOGRAPHIES AND THE NEGATIVE
CONSEQUENCES OF EXTREME
WEATHER.
WHY ?
• ACCORDING TO UNICEF, 40% OF BANGLADESH’S
POPULATION IS CHILDREN AND STATISTICS INDICATE
THAT 6,00,000 ARE OUT OF SCHOOL. TO
CONTRIBUTE TO INCREASED ENROLMENT, WE HAVE
FORGED PARTNERSHIPS IN BANGLADESH AND ARE
CURRENTLY WORKING ON FOUR PROJECT PROGRAMS
THAT EXTEND OVER A PERIOD OF 1 – 6 YEARS. UPON
COMPLETION OUR PROJECTS WILL CONTRIBUTE TO
THE ENROLLMENT OF MORE THAN 200,000

• THE ONE-TEACHER SCHOOL IS OPERATED BY THE SAME TEACHER FOR THE SAME
COHORT OF CHILDREN FOR A PERIOD OF FOUR YEARS AND DELIVERS LESSONS IN

• THE SCHOOL HOURS ARE FLEXIBLE AND ARE FIXED ACCORDING TO NEEDS
• CHILDREN DO NOT HAVE TO PAY ANY FEES AND THERE ARE NO LONG HOLIDAYS
• LITTLE OR NO HOMEWORK AS MOST OF THEIR PARENTS ARE UNABLE TO ASSIST
