Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is the noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. BPH occurs mainly in men over 50 years of age as testosterone levels decrease and estrogen levels remain constant, allowing estrogen to promote prostate growth. Symptoms of BPH include slow or interrupted urine flow, frequent urination, urgency, and incomplete bladder emptying. Treatment options range from lifestyle changes and medication to minimally invasive procedures and surgery depending on the severity of symptoms and complications.
