Eco-Engineering: The Grass Is
Always Greener
Yes, the title of this chapter has a dual meaning. Among senior execu-tives at global corporations, eco-engineering is already seen as astrategic imperative—even though the practice of eco-engineering is
not yet clearly understood by engineers. At the same time, many companies
feel constant pressure to prove that their “green” initiatives are greener than
their competitors’, leading to an upward spiral in greenwashing.
The net result is confusion. It can be difficult for engineers, executives, and
consumers to distinguish between an environmentally responsible project and
a plain old-fashioned PR grab. If you’re an engineer who’s really interested
in making a positive environmental impact, what should you focus on? Here
are a few suggestions, based on lessons learned from the real world of eco-
engineering.
Carbon Neutrality: Good Start but Not Enough
Corporate sustainability leaders tend to be a collaborative group. They are
open to sharing ideas, swapping stories, and growing their networks of col-
leagues in other companies. And that’s a great thing, because those of us who
deal with corporate sustainability on a daily basis know we’re in uncharted
territory and that we’re all learning as we go. We understand it’s in every-
one’s best interest if the overall economy becomes more sustainable. After all,
when it comes to climate changes there aren’t winners and losers—ultimately
we’ll either all win or all lose.

For example, let’s say your company magically reduces the environmental
impact of its operations to nothing so that you’re able to deliver your products
and services with no impact of any kind. But in the excitement your company
decides that you have created such a big advantage through your eco-effective-
ness that you better keep it a secret and not share your magic with anyone else.
In this case, how much better off is the world? Does erasing the impact of one
company make a big difference? Unfortunately, no.
Which brings us to the subject of carbon neutrality, the term often used to
describe the goal of corporate efforts to lessen companies’ impact on the
environment. No company can reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to
zero, so the idea is that Organization A pays Organization B to plant trees,
increase energy efficiency, create green energy, or do something else with a
positive impact on GHG emissions, thus offsetting Organization A’s own car-
bon emissions.
Many companies have centered their environmental strategy on a goal of
achieving carbon neutrality. They are generally doing some efficiency proj-
ects, purchasing some green energy, and offsetting the rest. But we’ve been
looking at product and service lifecycles, and we know the part that’s within
your four walls may be only a small part of your overall impact. What about
your supply chain? What about your products in use at your customers’ facil-
ities? What about your products at the end of their usef ...

SUMMARY
After a meeting in 2002, General Electric was being accused of not caring enough about the environment according to several religious groups. Jeffrey Immelt, the CEO of General Electric, introduced a new program to his company in 2005. This new program is known as Ecomagination. Ecomagination, according to Immelt, is to utilize the resources and experiences of the company in responding to environmental concerns of GE’s stakeholders. This program began by trying to count all of GE’s global warming emissions, but quickly spread to other processes showing that financial and environmental performance could work together.
After the launch of Immelt’s new program, Ecomagination, Immelt still did not impress the GE shareholders. Tom Borelli, a spokesman for the Free Enterprise Action Firm (FEAF), thinks that Mr. Immelt is distracted from focusing his attention on General Electric. In 2006, FEAF withheld their support of approving Jeffrey Immelt as a director.
In 2010, it was very apparent that Mr. Immelt and the GE management team needed to focus more on the profitability and environmental response of the Ecomagination program. According to Immelt, he launched this program to try and boost economic growth. GE’s Ecomagination is committed to developing eco-friendly products and solutions that will help their shareholders. The bottom line is that Ecomagination was put into effect to create products and services that were profitable and eco-friendly.
INTERNAL ANALYSIS
Strengths
General Electric is a multinational company that is a major competitor to industries all over the world. GE offers their customers products and services in a wide range of categories such as aircraft maintenance, water processing, and power generation to name a few. GE has to continue to be innovative when coming up with new products and services for their customers. With that being said, the creation of Ecomagination has brought about a strength for GE in the form of innovation. I think that if GE continues to innovate new and unique programs like Ecomagination they will continue to be successful in boosting economic growth worldwide.
Another strength for Immelt’s Ecomagination program is the advancement of green technologies. “Going Green” is a phrase used when companies want to protect the environment and use more energy efficient products. GE’s Ecomagination is doing just that; going green. Ecomagination was created to offer profitable services and products that were more ecologically sound. I think that the Ecomagination program provides an economic value to the company that not many companies have. Although there are more and more companies that are attempting to “go green”, I believe that GE has a competitive advantage with Ecomagination and other innovative ideas that will provide long term advantages over other industries in the same market. Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).
