3. BOOK 1: ARE YOU MY MOTHER?
• Visual style:
The book has a bright colour-scheme but the imagery is quiet. There are no
backgrounds and all detail shown is there for as it is necessary to tell the story. All
graphics appear to be hand-drawn, simplistic designs but are highly textured. The
bird in the story is cartoonish but all other features are textured and realistic
looking (the nest in slide above).
• Layout:
The images are always central whilst the text swaps between the top and bottom
of the page. The image is enlarged if there is a smaller amount of text.
Sometimes the text will go down the page, this is used when describing
movement. In this example the bird is going down, and so the text goes down.
• Fonts & amount of text:
The font is large and basic, this helps to make it easier for children to read and
try to understand (at an early age). There is small amounts of text per page, no
more then 3-5 lines. The sentences are short and simple.

style:
6. BOOK 2: CARS AND TRUCKS (FROM A-Z)
• Visual style:
The book uses bright colour’s and large imagery, giving a busy and loud effect. This
fits with the book for as it takes place on a busy road. The illustrations are all hand-
drawn and simple, giving them a cartoonish visual style.
• Layout:
The text is either found at the top of the page or following behind the characters
cars. The illustrations fill up most of the page and are compact, depending on size of
the vehicle the images can be overlapped or spaced. Being an educational book, it
teaches young children the alphabet. On every page the letters of the vehicles are
displayed in capital and lowercase lettering. The whole book is shaped like an apple,
for as the worm on the front cover is driving a car shaped like an apple. Therefore
the whole book is dye cut so that every page is designed as an ‘apple’ layout.
• Fonts & text amount:
The text is large and minimalistic. At the beginning the book starts with a sentence
which sets up the rest of the story, allowing anything after it to be read almost like a
list. This means that there is on average four words per page. And it also includes
the letter of the alphabet being taught. Each page is divided by the letter, the book
uses alliteration as a way to teach young children the alphabet.
7. • Author & illustrator:
Richard Scarry
• Book Publisher:
Random House Books for Young Readers
• No. pages Page size:
22 pages
3.9 x 3.9 inches
• Book/ page design:
The book is one continuous road, therefore it uses a double page illustration.
Each page is connected visually by the road, some vehicles appear over two
pages.
9. BOOK 3: MR. BROWN CAN MOO, CAN YOU?
• Visual style:
The book is very colourful and cartoonish, it has lots of imagery and is textured
greatly. All illustrations are hand-drawn and detailed, some of the imagery is drawn or
coloured differently to it’s real life counter parts, making it more visually enticing for
younger children.
• Layout:
The text is either found at the bottom of the page or as speech coming out of the
characters mouths. The illustrations fill up most of the page, sometimes the images are
large enough to overlap into the blank space for the text. Being an educational book, it
teaches young children rhyme and animal sounds using onomatopoeia. On every pair
of pages there is a new animal or sound.
• Fonts & text amount:
The text is large and minimalistic. At the beginning the book starts with a sentence
which sets up the rest of the story, to continue the rhythm of the book it repeats part of
this sentence for each new sound: “Oh the wonderful sounds Mr. Brown can do! He
can…”. There is on average 20 words per page, however because it is all repetition
there are only 2-4 new words. The words that describe the sound are in a different
colour and font to the rest of the text. This helps it to stand out and makes it more fun
for young children. The majority of the text is in a simple black font, whilst the
onomatopoeia is in a fun font that changes to the colour of the animal that Mr. Brown is
imitating.
