The DigiTale project aims to promote ICT skills among inmates in Catalonia's prisons through digital storytelling. Inmates and staff participate in training workshops to produce audio stories, video stories, photo stories, video posters, digital narratives, and digital magazines using free software and simple equipment. The project is part of a larger AlfaDigital program that incorporates ICT into prison life through initiatives like computer recycling and Internet access. Over 125 inmates and staff have been trained since 2011, with their digital stories shared online and in traveling exhibitions.

20. Digital StoryTelling
They are personal stories that
combines traditional storytelling with
multimedia (photos, video, audio,
music...) that are assembled into a
video.
The basic story is written by each
participant. The same participants are
those who read, recorded and edited
the materials and produce the final
video.

“The impact in prison of ICT and Internet”
Editor's Notes
Hello. We are Julio Zino, and Jaume Martin, from the Direction General of Penitentiary Services, from Catalonia.
Thanks for the opportunity to explain our work. Our communication talks about promoting the use of ICT in socio-educational actions in prison, using digital stories.
The project is called Digitale and is a part of the AlfaDigital program along with Cyberaules (computer recycling and free software) and ICT / Omnia points (Internet access for inmates), among others actions...
The Digitale project is aimed at promoting ICT through the production of digital stories that are realized in different audiovisual products:
<number>
The 13 prisons of Catalonia are participating in the AlfaDigital program and right now 7 prisons are working in Digitale project
The starting point of the Digitale project is the training of professionals and prison inmates, that is carried out in workshops around a final product.Since June 2011 (twenty eleven) we have trained 125 (one hundred and twenty five) people.
The methodology of the project is guided by the meaningful learning theory:• connecting to personal experiences
• the promotion of own abilities
• The organization of learning in communities of practice
• Link training to a final product accessible and easy to spread
To generate these products, no special equipment is needed. We use a simple technical equipment: PC, microphone and free software.
For this reason in our logos is there always the image of this microphone
Through this methodology and procedures we promote Oral, written, creative and aesthetic skills. ICT is introduced as a cross curricular theme:• editing text,
• Recording and editing audio
• Editing video• InternetAlso, we spread the resulting products through a blog, YouTube and directly in prisons and other institutions trough traveling exhibitions, as the Sant Jordi Digitale.
All this, and specially to share of products, are very important motivating factors.

I propose now to take a little trip by the project Digitale, a small sample of the results of these workshops.First, the AudioRelatos, which are the most simple product: a literary text is readed, recorded and released as audio ...
William Noel, Quatre Camins’s prison inmate, read to us, "Remains forbidden", attributed to the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda ...
Now, an example of VideoStory: this is an AudioStory whith some added images.
Sergio, one "Model"’s prison inmate presents "The masks", a poem by the Uruguayan writer Mario Benedetti, with images of masks created in another prison workshop.
Then, a more complex product: a Digital Story Telling -made on the basis of a personal story, which is narrated in firstperson- is a video that combines voice, music and images.
The final product is very worthy and valuable as testimony of an experience and also because of its strong emotional impact.
We want also to introduce "My mother," a Digital Story Telling in which Nemesio tells the story of his mother, linking it with passages in the history of Spain.
And finally, the dMagaZine.
An experience that has spread to 4 prisons and offers today many educational opportunities and interesting results as a communication tool ...
Consisting in produce periodicaly
digital audio magazines, written and recorded by the inmates.
We can listen now a short passage from the dMagaZine "Cultural Universe," made by Quatre Camins’s prison inmates wich have already reached its 19th edition.
Thanks for listening and if you want to know more about our project you can contact us by any of these channels.
