The Bohele Integrated Watershed landscape in Tigray, Ethiopia faces several environmental problems including high soil erosion, deforestation, water shortages, and low crop productivity. To address these issues, the MERET project initiated a community-based watershed management program in 2009 involving local government, communities, and sectors. Through collaborative planning, community bylaws, and interventions like controlled grazing and water harvesting, the program has led to increased vegetation cover, regeneration of forests, high grass biomass, and integrated livelihood options. Moving forward, further strengthening of cross-sectoral collaboration, improving irrigation, market integration, and quantitative monitoring of impacts are needed.
