Zimmerman on May 24, 1941 in Hibbing, Minnesota. Hibbing is a desolate mining town on the
outskirts of Duluth, near the Canadian border. Zimmerman's father was a local business owner,
operating an appliance and furniture store in Hibbing. As a boy, young Robert was introverted and
secretive. As he reached adolescence Robert became a talented storyteller with a tendency to

companies. The success of British bands began to get to large to ignore, it changed the styles of

You know this song, right? That's what Gregg Allman's autobiography My Cross to Bear, published
in 2012, seems to be asking the reader all throughout the book. The lead guitarist of the Allman
Brothers Band tells about his life and about his music.There's one big aspect of this autobiography
that makes it harder to read than the "standard autobiography". When reading the book, I often
found myself searching up and listening to songs my phone just to get the feel of the situation,
which was an annoying interruption to the reading itself, since Allman often established a mood
with "I went to work on the lyrics: "I've been run down I've been lied to...".", with the expectation

After you think about those repeated references to music, I realised that of course music is going to
be a big part of a man's life who has dedicated his entire life to it. In an autobiography, you can
clearly get a feel for what is important for the writer in his life, and for Allman, it's clearly his music

For concert essay 2, I have went with an online concert. I have chosen the concert at Alpine Valley,
where the Grateful Dead performed July 7, 1989. This is a historic venue for the Grateful Dead and
the Deadheads, because this was an atmosphere that always seemed to be far more electric than
most. Although the Grateful Dead was a great live act throughout the entire existence of the band,
many of the band members admit during the 89 & 90 tours, they were at their best. To open the
concert, the band members claim the stage to a roaring crowd, particularly focused upon Jerry
Garcia. With very little preparation time, the band jumped right into their first song, without
hesitation. This stood out to me because all of the concerts I have seen live, they'll spend quite some

It was a vernal early summer day in 2010, back in my high school classroom in China. I was doing a
presentation on the 52nd Grammy Awards for my English class project, with the playback of the
show on the projector. The entire class devotedly enjoyed the flamboyant Lady Gaga, the patriotic
21 Guns by Green Day, the elegant Beyoncé, and the astounding whirling performance by Pink. The

A puffy haired, spandex clad dude making silly faces? Do you see a duck walk? A burning guitar?
The guitar as an instrument evokes so many feelings, even for those not musically inclined. The
guitar solo, is also a topic of heated debates. What makes a good solo? Is it the ability to compliment
a song, or to be a showcase for self–indulgence?
And while the guitar solo seems synonymous with rock and roll music, its roots are embedded in
jazz and blues.

Leading into the 1950s there are many who contributed to the formation of what became know as
rock and roll. It is Chuck Berry, however, who many believe personifies rock and roll. His 1955
recording Maybellene is considered the start of rock and roll guitar, and Johnny B. Goode has one
best solos in rock history.
Meanwhile over in Britain there was a band called The Shadows. They preceded the Beatles by five
years, being active from 1958–1968. They were mainly an instrumental band and hand a distinct
sound. Hank Marvin, lead guitarist had a very clean sound, also used vibrato and echo. The
Shadows were one of the first to be labeled with the "surf rock" tag. They have influenced the likes
of Mark Knopfler, Neil Young, and Carlos Santana.
The sixties may be rock and rolls golden age. With new solid guitars, huge amplifiers, a new breed
of musicians took to experimenting with different styles, sounds, and effects. Bands such as the
Yardbirds combined blues guitar techniques and pop sensibility that laid the foundation for much of
the 60s guitar sound. The popularity of rock music had one unexpected effect on the guitar. With the
large amount of volume needed, so more and more fans could hear what was being played.

If you were to ask a Muse fan the question, "What genre are Muse?" most would either tell you that
they're some form of alternative or that they simply don't know. The reason for this is because over
22 years and 7 studio albums, along with a smattering of B–Sides attached to singles, Muse have
never really defined themselves as one genre. Muse, of course, are not the only band that defy being
confined to a single genre, The White Stripes and Led Zeppelin come to mind. This raises the
question; how do we define bands that span multiple genres? Beaumont (2014) describes the
majority of Muse's first two albums as being Rachmaninoff influenced writing that "...recently he's
[Matt Bellamy] been listening to a lot of early 20th century piano music, emotional but technically
complex composers such as Rachmaninoff, and he had a head full of ivories. So when 'Sunburn',
written and demo'd while the band were in the studio, didn't sound right when played on guitar

My father was a hard man to dislike. I know it's common at a funeral to only remember the good

He met the woman –– Valerie –– who would become his wife at his sister Isabell's wedding. Valerie
worked in a coat factory. He married her in 1970. Three years later, in 1973, he had his only child.
After working in a dye house for many years, he became a postal clerk, a job he had for 20 years
until he retired. He died 17 years later.
It's the simple bio of a simple and modest man.
But you don't measure the life of a man by simple facts, simply told.
It's been said that you measure it in the truths he learned, or in the times he cried, in the bridges he
burned, or the way that he died.
In his 79 years, my father learned much, rarely if ever cried, never burned a bridge, and pretty much
knew when he wanted to make his exit.

He learned that you should fill your life with music. My father was an accordion player. He taught
himself to play the piano and could play everything from Chopin to the Chattanooga Choo–Choo.
He played boogie–woogie, Polish polkas, Italian dance numbers, Broadway classics, and Beatles
tunes. Some of the happiest hours of his life were spent squeezing the squeezebox, stomping a foot
on the floor, his fingers flying across the keyboard on everything from Roll Out the Barrel to the

and the youth of the time could not get enough. Elvis Presley had introduced and widely

Psychedelics, and drugs in general became such an important part of life during the 60's that it's
influence was inescapable. Nowhere can this fact be seen more clearly than in the music of the time.
The most obvious influence drugs had on music can bee seen in the lyrics. Drug references abound,
be it Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze" of marijuana smoke, or the Beatles' "Lucy in the Sky with
Diamonds", obviously referring to LSD. Even the names of the bands were drug inspired, as
Garofalo points out in reference to the Doors: "The group took it's name from Aldous Huxley's The
Doors of Perception, a book about the liberating aspects of drug use." Even the music itself was
influenced by drugs. Take for example much of the music by the Doors. Their song "the End" is a
psychedelic journey in to the world of LSD. The slow beat and "trippy" music in the song was
probably created with the use of drugs and hence is better appreciated when heard while on drugs.
This is also true of the music of the Grateful Dead, although this can be much more clearly seen in
their live performances as opposed to their studio work. Much of their music is geared specifically
toward those in the audience who are on drugs. Hearing one of their 30 minute jams is a much
different experience on drugs, and that is the experience that they intended the audience to have.

important influence to modern music is The Grateful Dead.
The group was formed in 1965 by bluegrass – enthusiast Jerry Garcia on guitar and vocals, Ron

music student Phil Lesh on bass and vocals, and Bill Kreutzmann on drums. From the beginning,

Grisman is a still a renowned mandolinist, but while with Garcia, they both explored the bluegrass
scene. This was Jerry's "foundation" for his musical contributions to the Grateful Dead.
Without Jerry's influence, the Grateful Dead would not have it's distinct earthy timbre or feel that
has been extremely significant in attracting their particular following.
Another contribution to the Dead's style was bassist Phil Lesh. With only formal jazz training on the
trumpet, Lesh picked up a bass and learned as he went while playing with the Grateful Dead's then
nucleus, The Warlocks. Lesh is famous for his jazz improvisational style. This particular style
usually finds his fingers running up and down the neck of a five or six string bass (seen right),
dropping what are affectionately known to fans as "Phil Bombs", furiously low
frequency notes that tend to rumble in auditoriums and can only be created with a five or six string
bass. As one can well imagine, these two aforementioned styles together could create somewhat of

Bill Kreutzmann, the "heartbeat" of the Grateful Dead, had been behind a kit since the
age of eleven when Jerry Garcia met him in 1962. His early love of drums allowed him to be
