2. Discourse of ‘blaxploitation’ films
• the films opening is a series of panning shots
that follow the main character who is a black
female, Jackie brown (Pam Grier)
• she moves confidently through an airport, the
audio visual signifier in this scene is a classic
funk track "across 110th street" by Bobby
Womack and peace.
4. • Funk music was always a typical convention of
blaxploitation and an important part of the
language of the genre. An honest reflection of the
black community.
• The language of the film is also very within the
culture of African American living. The over use of
the word ‘n***a’ is a common discourse in this
genre of films
• One scene also sees Jackie interrogated by two
white police officers another common discourse
in these films.
6. Crime discourse
• Ordell Robbie another main character in this film
regularly is involved with crime discourse as he
deals with guns and criminals all throughout. And
also deals guns himself.
• Ordells first major part in the film is leading a
person to the boot of a car and then executing
him.
• The main narrative of the film is in fact of a heist
where people play people against each other a
common discourse in the crime genre.
