BJDs are dolls with ball and socket joints that are commonly made of hard, dense plastic in parts strung together with thick elastic. They range in size from about 60 cm to 10 cm and are produced primarily in Japan, South Korea, and China. The history of commercially produced Asian resin BJDs began in 1999 when the Japanese company VOLKS created the Super Dolfie line. Modern Asian BJDs are intended for adult collectors and customizers and range in price from $100 to over $1000. BJDs can be readily customized by removing and replacing parts like eyes, heads, hands, and feet.
