Josh Rieskamp conducted research on veery songbird songs at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies for his 2015 REU program. He recorded over 1,752 songs to analyze their repertoire, which is the set of distinct song types a species or individual uses. Veeries typically have a repertoire of 1-3 song types, with most using just one song type but modifying it through additions, deletions, translocations of notes, or frequency shifts. The subtle differences between veery song types and their complex modifications provide insights into bird communication. The REU program also included educational outreach and exploring the Cary Institute grounds.
