3. Introduction
Built in Quality stands in contrast to detecting issues
and reworking in quality or even worse, delivering
defects. In B.I.Q. we follow Dr. Deming in seeing each
step as a producer and a customer of the prior step.
B.I.Q. is a concept that saves unnecessary time and
effort and prevents waste. It is not complex or difficult
to understand and does not need to be expensive, but
we must pay the price in our design, development, and
discipline to see its fruits. What follows is a primer to
get us thinking and on the road to application. The
Journey is ours to take. Let’s get going. --Tom Curtis
4. B.I.Q. = Built in Quality
This means quality
IN and AT and TO
each step of the process.
5. The 3 BIQ
Activities
Create Quality
The Current Step IN
Ensure Quality
AT
The Next Step
Receive Quality
TO
7. The Current Step
The current step is responsible for putting quality
IN
the product.
We must...
1. Ensure a process is capable of doing what is required.
2. Establish standard work to deliver quality every time.
3. Keep the process equipment, systems, & tools in top running order.
9. The Current Step & The Next Step
Both the current and the next step are responsible for quality
AT
the hand-off between steps.
We must...
1. Emphasize the Supplier/Customer relationship between the steps.
2. Establish standard work for the specific hand-off.
3. Ensure both steps play their role in review at hand-off.
11. The Next Step
The next step is responsible for receiving quality
TO
their step.
We must...
1. Inspect before receiving.
2. Establish standard work to have it happen every time.
3. Reject receipt if it does not meet standard so it can be fixed by creator.
