The document summarizes the development of the Business & IP Centre at the British Library from its origins in 2006 to the present. It began as a library of last resort but now serves anyone conducting research. To better serve business users, it adopted business approaches like market research, networking, and workshops. It provides reference support, skills training, and business advice. The Centre has supported over 150,000 SMEs and increased their chances of success. It aims to expand its national network to more cities and towns by 2023. The summary highlights the Centre's approach and some success stories of entrepreneurs it has helped.

Our whole webinar will be divided into three sections.
The What. What is IP (by way of introduction an overview to understand what it is we’re working with)
The How How do I protect my IP (about 80% of our time will be looking at the different types of IP and how we gain protection)
The Why Why should I protect IP (we finish off concluding why IP really is important and what you should do next)
I like to see each of these forms of IP as members of a family.
Each of these innovations and creations can be protected by a different form of IP.
List each of them and why they are what they are.
Its good to identify what your creations are and which IP could cover it. A working knowledge of this will help to make good decisions around protection.
All forms of IP can exist in one company protecting different parts of the business. You or your company can also own more than one type of IP depending on what you wish to protect.
Patent for the ring pull opener – US 3428212 (1969). (closure for easy opening cans). The inventor licensed the invention to coke. *(you can jump to the next slide and back to show the full patent).
Registered Trademark for Coca-Cola, registered in 1893.
Registered Design (in the US design patent) No. 48,160, Nov 1915. One of the first examples of a company differentiating itself with packaging.
Copyright for old advertising.
Trade secret for the recipe 135 years old. After Dr. John S. Pemberton invented Coca-Cola in 1886, the formula was kept a close secret, only shared with a small group and not written down until 1919. The Company transferred the secret formula to the World of Coca-Cola from a vault at SunTrust Bank in downtown Atlanta, Georgia where it had been housed since 1925.
Know-how the sum knowledge since 1892 of selling, marketing, promoting, distributing an iconic product around the world. Invaluable years of people experience and knowledge.
Here is the original full patent by the inventor M A Rohrlick, 1969.
You can see how patents often include drawings on how the device works as well as the ‘claims’ in writing. ‘Claims’ are the things of novelty that make the patent unique and innovative.
In a patent or patent application, the claims define, in technical terms, the extent, i.e. the scope, of the protection conferred by a patent, or the protection sought in a patent application. In other words, the purpose of the claims is to define which subject-matter is protected by the patent (or sought to be protected by the patent application). This is termed as the "notice function" of a patent claim—to warn others of what they must not do if they are to avoid infringement liability.[1] The claims are of the utmost importance both during prosecution and litigation alike. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patent_claim#:~:text=In%20a%20patent%20or%20patent,sought%20in%20a%20patent%20application.
Possibly the most recognisable logo in the world, whatever language it is in.
The unique shape means it can be felt inside an ice box.
The secret formula is only known to a few members of the company.
Coca-Cola and Father Christmas:
The Sundblom Santa story - 1931: ‘My hat’s off to the pause that refreshes’
We commissioned Haddon Sundblom (an illustrator) to create an image of Santa Claus.
He may have been paid as much as $1,000 per painting - a lot of money at that time (you could buy a car for $700).
For inspiration, Sundblom turned to Clement Clark Moore's 1822 poem "A Visit From St. Nicholas" (commonly called "'Twas the Night Before Christmas").
Moore's description of St. Nick led to an image of a warm, friendly, pleasantly plump and human Santa.
(And even though it's often said that Santa wears a red coat because red is the colour of Coca-Cola, Santa appeared in a red coat before Sundblom painted him.
