Typhoid fever is caused by the bacterial pathogen Salmonella Typhi. It is spread through contaminated food or water and affects about 21.5 million people worldwide each year. Common symptoms include sustained fever over 103 degrees F, abdominal pain, severe diarrhea, and rash. Treatment involves antibiotics such as amoxicillin, ceftriaxone, azithromycin or ciprofloxacin. Prevention focuses on vaccination, hand washing, avoiding risky foods/drinks, boiling water, and peeling fruits and vegetables. In the event of a bioterrorism attack, citizens would be warned to evacuate along designated routes to a quarantine zone, where they would receive safety kits and instructions to remain isolated
