Kencur, also known as Kaempferia galanga L., is a type of medicinal plant belonging to the Zingiberaceae family. Its rhizome contains essential oils and alkaloids that are used as a stimulant. Kencur is distributed in Malaysia, Thailand, and other parts of Asia, and goes by different names in various regions. Svante Arrhenius developed an acid-base theory based on the work of Jacobus Henricus van 't Hoff and Wilhelm Ostwald. In 1815, C.A. Seydler, a German who used the word “pharmakognosie” in his book named Analecta Pharmacognostica, was referred to as the father of pharmacognosy. Work of Galen: - (131 - 200) Galen was a Greek pharmacist; he worked on the extraction of a chemical constituent from the plants. Pharmacognosy deals with the natural drugs obtained from organisms such as most plants, microbes, and animals. Up to date, many important drugs including morphine, atropine, galanthamine, etc. have originated from natural sources that continue to be good model molecules in drug discovery. The scope of Pharmacognosy gives a sound knowledge of the vegetable drugs under botany and animal drugs under zoology. It also includes plant taxonomy, plant breeding, plant pathology, plant genetics, and by this knowledge, one can improve the cultivation methods for both medicinal and aromatic plants
