Results showed Kings River had the highest percentage of pollution-sensitive EPT taxa and lowest ratio of pollution-tolerant to intolerant organisms, indicating best health. White River had the highest percentages of pollution-tolerant organisms and Chironomidae, and lowest EPT, indicating most impairment. Percentage of pollution-tolerant organisms increased with higher phosphorus levels at most sites.
ABSTRACT
Small mammals play important roles in ecosystems but their diversity decreases in urban areas and smaller forest fragments. A study at the University of West Georgia used game cameras to assess small mammal and feral cat populations across six forest patches varying in size on campus. The results showed greater small mammal richness in larger patches and higher relative cat abundance in smaller, more urbanized patches. Increased cat numbers in these patches likely stemmed from more available human food sources and their presence corresponded to lower native small mammal species diversity, possibly due to greater competition and predation.
Too Much Lawn Mowing Reduces Bee Population, Study Shows
A study showed that weekly lawn mowing reduces bee populations by limiting the growth of wildflowers that provide pollen and nectar for bees. Researchers observed over 4,500 bees and found mowing every other week improved bee populations and biodiversity by up to 30%. Less frequent mowing also reduces greenhouse gas emissions, as weekly lawn maintenance on one hectare can produce as much carbon dioxide as flying halfway around the world. Allowing lawns to grow taller allows grass to absorb more greenhouse gases and filter pollutants from the air. Mowing less frequently provides environmental, financial, and time savings benefits.

This study investigated the potential impacts of climate change on two small-range bromeliad species in Brazil, Waltillia hatschbachii and Alcantarea imperialis, using predictive species distribution models. This suggests the species are at high risk of extinction due to insufficient habitat to escape the effects of climate change. In 2011, CVC began using long-term data loggers to monitor pollution events in streams within the Kiski-Conemaugh River Basin. As part of the program, CVC collected macro-invertebrate samples from each logger site in the spring and fall of the year to begin assessing biological integrity of the monitored streams and attaining baseline data. Throughout the program, several unknown impacts were recorded using the data loggers and confirmed with macro-invertebrates. In 2014, CVC began to sample fish at logger monitoring locations to complete biological baseline data collection, confirm and diagnose stream pollutants and assess reclamation efforts. The current analyses of vegetation were aimed to study the different effects of environmental variables on plant species and communities and their combined interactions to these variables, identified threats to local vegetation and suggestion for remedial measures in the Mount Eelum, Swat, Pakistan. For assessment of environmental variability quantitative ecological techniques were used through quadrats having sizes of 2 × 2, 5 × 5 and 10 × 10 m2 for herbs, shrubs and trees respectively. Result of the present study revealed 124 plant species in the study area. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) was used to analyze the ecological gradient of vegetation. The environmental data and species abundance were used in CANOCO software version 4.5. The presence absence data of plant species were elaborated with Cluster and Two Way Cluster Analysis techniques using PC-ORD version 5 to show different species composition that resulted in five plant communities. Findings indicate that elevation, aspect and soil texture are the strongest variables that have significant effect on species composition and distribution of various communities shown with P value 0.0500. It is recommended to protect and use sensibly whole of the Flora normally and rare species particularly in the region.

It found that the abundance of invasive species was much higher near roads, while abundance of native species was higher farther from roads. However, the distribution of native plants with proximity to roads was oddly distributed, indicating there are other influencing factors beyond just roads that need further research to identify. The study used random sampling and statistical analysis to determine relationships between species and distance from roads.

However, more samples would be needed to draw definitive conclusions due to sources of error like inconsistent soil sampling methods between researchers.

Linking biodiversity data for ecology

1) Using the Encyclopedia of Life and Global Names Recognition and Discovery to capture species interactions from text and create a "digital ecosystem".

This document summarizes a study that investigated the demographic changes in 70 plant and animal lineages from the South American Dry Diagonal region in response to Pleistocene climate oscillations. Comparative phylogeographic and predictive modeling approaches were used to analyze DNA sequences and distribution data. The results suggest contrasting demographic responses among lineages during glacial periods, with asynchrony in community responses. Species attributes related to resource use, reproduction and dispersal appeared to influence the contrasting responses. Lineages showing similar responses exhibited synchronous changes across the Middle and Late Pleistocene, supporting shared evolutionary responses to common environmental mechanisms.

This document discusses tracking changes in intestinal nematode communities in rufous mouse lemurs over three years in Madagascar. Long-term longitudinal studies of parasite communities in individual hosts are important but rarely conducted. The research questions examined whether there is consistent succession in nematode communities within individual hosts (infracommunities) and how those relate to the overall component communities across hosts. Analysis of 634 fecal samples from 78 mouse lemurs identified putative nematode species using barcoding. While component communities remained quite stable, there was significant turnover within individual infracommunities from year to year.

EEB Group Ecology Report
The study examined the effect of distance from a water source (Temescal Canyon creek) on plant biodiversity. Data on the number of plant species was collected within quadrats placed 0m and 1m from the creek across 16 replicate sites. Statistical analysis found significantly higher average species richness and a greater range of species closer to the creek, supporting the hypothesis that less distance from water leads to greater biodiversity. The results demonstrate the importance of water sources for developing plant diversity in ecosystems.

Linking biodiversity data for ecology
This document discusses two case studies linking biodiversity data from existing online resources:
1) Using the Encyclopedia of Life and Global Names Recognition and Discovery to capture species interactions from text and create a "digital ecosystem".
2) Linking phenotype data from Phenoscape and TraitBank to taxon location data from GBIF and environmental data from Map of Life to associate phenotypes with habitats. Both workflows are able to programmatically extract and integrate biodiversity data from multiple sources to generate new knowledge.
Ecological sampling

This document summarizes a study that investigated the demographic changes in 70 plant and animal lineages from the South American Dry Diagonal region in response to Pleistocene climate oscillations. Comparative phylogeographic and predictive modeling approaches were used to analyze DNA sequences and distribution data. The results suggest contrasting demographic responses among lineages during glacial periods, with asynchrony in community responses. Species attributes related to resource use, reproduction and dispersal appeared to influence the contrasting responses. Lineages showing similar responses exhibited synchronous changes across the Middle and Late Pleistocene, supporting shared evolutionary responses to common environmental mechanisms.

This document discusses tracking changes in intestinal nematode communities in rufous mouse lemurs over three years in Madagascar. Long-term longitudinal studies of parasite communities in individual hosts are important but rarely conducted. The research questions examined whether there is consistent succession in nematode communities within individual hosts (infracommunities) and how those relate to the overall component communities across hosts. Analysis of 634 fecal samples from 78 mouse lemurs identified putative nematode species using barcoding. While component communities remained quite stable, there was significant turnover within individual infracommunities from year to year.

David MacDougall is a biologist at Clough Harbour & Associates LLP specializing in wetland delineation, stream assessment, ecological assessments, and threatened and endangered species surveys. He received his B.T. in Wildlife Management and A.A.S. in Fisheries and Wildlife from SUNY Cobleskill. His representative project experience includes wetland delineations, habitat assessments, and threatened and endangered species surveys for a variety of clients on projects such as rail trails, campus plans, wind farms, and industrial developments.
EEB Group Ecology Report
The study examined the effect of distance from a water source (Temescal Canyon creek) on plant biodiversity. Data on the number of plant species was collected within quadrats placed 0m and 1m from the creek across 16 replicate sites. Statistical analysis found significantly higher average species richness and a greater range of species closer to the creek, supporting the hypothesis that less distance from water leads to greater biodiversity. The results demonstrate the importance of water sources for developing plant diversity in ecosystems.
