Affordable housing is a significant part of New York City.
An existing public housing complex in Bronx that accomodates 3000
low income residents, called the Mill Brook Houses was completed in 1959.
The whole complex is equivalent to 5 city blocks and the organization
of the superblocks do not correspond with the grid system of the city.
One part of the system consists 4 diagonal superblocks and the second part
has 6 arraying superblocks that flow giantly along the lot.
This project aims to critique and challenge the existing spatial
experience of the empty park on the groun plane of this housing complex.
By examining the surrounding environment to find different
typologies of buildings that exist throughout the city,
we used them to re define the ground plane of five city blocks.
The kit of parts that are selected, are then manipulated to
become simpler typologies of different buildings for the
neighborhood. They create maze like structures and open spaces
in between them for the opportunity to interact at many points.
The program of the buildings include banks, grocery stores,
hairdressers, nail salons, library etc. to sustain the needs of a
neighborhood and praise the communal living. The outdoor spaces
belong to the adjacent building and become public spaces for both
the residents and the visitors of the complex at all times.

This project renews the existing boathouse of Columbia University
in Inwood, New York. The existing building does not have enough storage
and is not convenient in terms of logistics for the rowers and the academy because
it does not relate to its site and its environment. The site is under a hill with the stadium and
includes a deck, where the rowers start their practice from.
The curvature of the building is designed to allow for the best circulation
in the exterior for the trucks to load and unload the boats.
The building includes classrooms and office spaces for the coaches
on the ground floor and the storage, gym, dressing rooms for the rowers on
the upper floor. The rower starts from the dressing room and then move down into the
storage to get his/her boat and walk right through the deck infront.
The facade is made from ceramic tubes that run along the building horizontally,
which break the sunglight while entering to the building.

Via Dei Teatro Marcello is a very crowded road that does
not have any traffic lights for all the tourist who are walking
around Rome to cross the street. Our intervention through this road
connects the stairs that go up to Michelangelo’s piazza to the new piazza
we create in front of Teatro Marcello. The elevated walkways allows
to carry people from one point to another by taking over existing
land conditions and some buildings that are embedded through this
controlled circulation. There is a 2 way pedestrian traffic that
includes different experiences and programs along the way that
is parallel to the road below but also gives access to cross the street.
The library is hidden under the pool level, which is a high hill that
connects to the level of Museo Campidoglio. Going down to
southwest, one hits the redesigned marketplace that uses
the existing columns of an ancient Roman market,
before reaching the piazza and the Teatro Marcello.
The existing buildings that are taken over become a public spa
with its courtyard that opens up to the back street.
By this configuration, we aim to intersect and connect different levels
of Rome’s history, without disturbing the existing car traffic on the road,
but changing the experience of the pedestrian circulation,
by creating an outdoor complex for the tourists and the people of Rome.
