To support their advanced Xfinity X1 platform and provide services to millions of customers, Comcast maintains physical data centers, but the company is increasingly relying on AWS as well; it plans to maintain both going forward. AWS supplies Comcast with resources on demand so that capacity issues in its brick-and-mortar sites can be more readily managed as part of its high-availability strategy. Comcast also employs AWS as a flexible, cost-effective platform for development and prototyping. Finally, AWS also helps Comcast make effective tactical and strategic use of the huge data streams generated by its customers’ use of its services. In this talk, we trace how Comcast uses AWS to mitigate risk and to open up new technical capabilities.

In recent years, the shift to online media streaming and the bundling of internet, television, and telephone services by telecommunications service providers have dramatically changed the landscape of media distribution. On February 12, 2014, Comcast Corp., the largest broadband and Pay-TV provider in the US (by total number of subscribers), offered a $45 billion bid to merge with Time Warner Cable (TWC). The merger is pending approval by US government regulators. Dish Network Corp. Chairman, Charlie Ergen, is deeply concerned about the positioning of his company, the third largest Pay-TV provider, should the Comcast-TWC merger proceed. He has publicly acknowledged that he is considering a merger with DirecTV LLC, the second largest Pay-TV provider, as a potential response. He has approached your team to assess Dish Network’s strategy in the face of the potential Comcast-TWC merger. Comcast is the third-largest Internet provider worldwide, managing massive networks which deliver connectivity and streaming content to millions of customers. Such networks face complex maintenance and troubleshooting issues. We use Machine Learning to analyze and model error patterns to continuously assess the health of our network and ensure a smooth experience for every user. This is supported with a Decision Engine, which can be configured to take appropriate remedial actions such as customer notifications and self-healing directives. We describe the architecture capable of scaling and handling billions of events per day and explain how H20 helps to implement the underlying learning models. We illustrate the superiority of H2O algorithms in all of the following: accuracy, speed and memory footprint with comparisons to other systems such as Spark ML. #h2ony

Almost all organizations now have a need for datascience and as such the main challenge after determining the algorithm is to scale it up and make it operational. We at comcast use several tools and technologies such as Python, R, SaS, H2O and so on. In this talk we will show how many common use cases use the common algorithms like Logistic Regression, Random Forest, Decision Trees , Clustering, NLP etc. Spark has several Machine Learning algorithms built in and has excellent scalability. Hence we at comcast built a platform to provide DSaaS on top of Spark with REST API as a means of controlling and submitting jobs so as to abstract most users from the rigor of writing(repeating ) code instead focusing on the actual requirements. We will show how we solved some of the problems of establishing feature vectors, choosing algorithms and then deploying models into production. We will showcase our use of Scala, R and Python to implement models using language of choice yet deploying quickly into production on 500 node Spark clusters.

In this session, we examine the evolution of the engineering teams at one of our key HPC customers, and how they expanded their use of AWS for HPC solutions to model new technologies and capabilities prior to production. The path recently culminated with the deployment of a large HPC cluster, scaling over a million vCPUs, to validate how the virtually unlimited infrastructure offered by AWS can maximize productivity.
