9. Pașcani is a municipality in Iași County, Moldova, Romania, consisting of the component localities Blăgești, Boșteni, Gâștești, Lunca,
Pașcani (residence) and Sodomeni. It is the second largest urban center in the county, with a population of 33,745 inhabitants (2011).
It is an important railway junction.
 LOCATION The city is located in the northwestern part of the county, in the south of the Suceava Plateau, on the
banks of the Siret River. It is crossed by the national road DN28A, which connects it to the east of Târgu Frumos
(further to Iași on DN28) and to the west to Moțca (further to Suceava on DN2). This road intersects at Pașcani with
the county road DJ208, which connects it to the south with Stolniceni-Prăjescu, Mogoșești-Siret, Hălăucești, Mircești
and further in Neamț de Săbăoani county (where it ends in DN2 which leads further to Roman); and north of Valea
Seacă, Lespezi, and further in Suceava County to Dolhasca, Dolhești, Preutești and Fălticeni (where it also ends in

 The first documentary attestation of the name of the city dates from April 8, 1419, when it appears inscribed as the
name of an estate in a deed of donation from the time of Alexander the Good, at that time there was a village with this
name. At the beginning of the 19th century, a small town appeared near the village. With the construction of the Lviv-
Chernivtsi-Iasi railway, which passed through the area, the small town, which in 1879 had only two inns and a few
shops, flourished.
 At the end of the 19th century, Pașcani was a rural commune, residence of the Siretul de Jos plateau of Suceava county,
a commune formed by the villages Târgușorul Pașcani, Gara Pașcani, Fântânelele, Brătești, Sodomeni, Boșteni, Gâșteni
Sea, Topile , Blăgești and Lunca, with a total of 10498 inhabitants living in 2302 houses. There were eight Orthodox
churches in the commune and the Roman Catholic Church in Pașcani, six mixed schools in Câscești, Lunca, Târgu
Pașcani, Sodomeni, Topilele, Valea Seacă, a CFR mixed urban primary school at Pașcani Station and two rural schools
in Blat. Bratesti, six mills and a soap factory. The main landowners were the heirs of Colonel Eugen Alcaz, who had

car, Transrarau is reaching its highest point at 1.400 meters and offers you a great view.
 The road is a 28 kilometers pass between Porojata village and Chiril Village, across the Rarau Mountains.
 Don’t forget that the road is closed during the winter season, so it is better to visit this area during late spring,
summer or early fall.

beautiful. Its elegant and richly adorned interior, a blend of Baroque and Rococo styles, features a ceiling painted by
Viennese painter Alexander Goltz decorated with nymphs and cupids. The curtain, also painted, shows an allegory of
the three stages of life as well as an allegory of the Romanian Unification.
The 1418 electric lights and a huge chandelier with more than 100 Venetian crystal lamps, add a touch of elegance to the
main auditorium.

 Elisabeta Esplanade
 Due to its significant elevation, the Elisabeta Esplanade offers great views over the city. Built at the beginning of the
20th century, it facilitated pedestrian transit in the area connecting the Iași Central Station, Copou Hill and the city
centre. Interestingly, before the esplanade was built, the area, which was rich in clay, provided local potters in the
nearby potters’ neighbourhood with the best material.

 Once called ‘the city of a hundred churches,’ Iași is home to several churches and monasteries that are still important
religious and cultural centres. The Moldavian Metropolitan Cathedral, built between 1833 and 1839, was designed by
Alexandru Orăscu, who also designed the University of Bucharest. The interior, painted by one of the most important
Romanian painters, Gheorghe Tattarescu, the co-founder of the National School of Fine Arts of Bucharest.
The cathedral is one of the most important destinations for pilgrims, who flock to the city every October to honour the
relics of Saint Parascheva, the patron saint of Moldova.
