San Gimignano is a small medieval town in Tuscany known for its unique collection of towers and winding streets. It was founded by the Etruscans and gained wealth in the Middle Ages along a trade route. At its peak, 72 towers were built but now only 14 remain. The town is home to architectural and artistic treasures like the Collegiata Church containing frescoes by Ghirlandaio. It is also the origin of the white wine Vernaccia di San Gimignano, the first Italian wine to receive DOC status.
