INTRODUCTION
Villa Moro Malipiero, now VILLA dei conti RIGONI SAVIOLI, is a Veneto-style
villa from the late 16th century, in Palladian style.
It is located in the renowned and prestigious spa town of Abano Terme,
international centre of treatments and wellness, just two minutes from the
pedestrian area and centre.
The villa was commissioned by Nicolò Malipiero in 1557.
The main façade is made up of four Ionic-order columns which support the
large pediment and by a noteworthy trachyte staircase that leads into the central
hall on the piano nobile. The staircase features two statues in fine Vicenza stone
from Costozza, like those present in the three entrance gates.
The rooms inside are wonderfully preserved and almost all frescoed by
Gian Battista Zelotti, student of “Veronese” – an important Italian painter of
the Renaissance period.
The frescoes recall biblical scenes (David and Goliath, Moses), epic and
chivalric scenes (Angelica and Rinaldo), symbolic and mythological scenes (Envy,
Fortitude, The fall of Phaethon). An important work is the fresco of “The Page”
which portrays a young nobleman intent on offering a bouquet of flowers.
Besides the marvelous frescoes, the interior is characteristic for its original
Palladian-Venetian single-cast flooring and a noteworthy fireplace in scagliola and
marble.
The villa keeps a rich historical documental archive of the area of Abano
Terme.
The annexes of the villa are quite important, like the small church which is still
consecrated today, a truly valuable, perfectly-conserved work of art; the dovecote-style
tower, and the barchessa (granary) scuderia (stables).
The overall surface area of the entire property is approximately 20,000 m². At
one time it was surrounded by a large park, now by an Italian-style garden.
The walkable surface area is approximately 6,500m² for an overall volume of
approximately 38,000 m³.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PROPERTY COMPLEX
THE VILLA
Villa Moro Malipiero, today property of the Rigoni Savioli family, was built in the
second half of the 16th century and recalls a Palladian-motif style.
At one time it had a high tympanum that gave a tone of true nobility to the whole and
adjacent buildings of great interest, now in part missing.
The impressive flight of stairs leads to the main entrance, the coat of arms rising
above it.
Four semi-columns rested on the wall of the façade rise up the two floors of the body
with a capital in Ionic style. The grand facade is completed by the classical trabeation and
the triangular pediment decorated with a double row of dentils.
The two “lateral wings”, that end in a denticulate cornice under the level of the
trabeation, open up with luminous windows onto the frescoed halls done by the painter
Zelotti.
The back of the villa presents the same semi-columns to repeat the front pattern.
Between the late 18th century and the early 19th century a few significant
interventions were done: the large central volume of the villa was divided in two floors with
the creation of a floor, and later, for statics purposes, two bearing walls were built on the
ground floor, thus subdividing the floor in 5 rooms.
LA BARCHESSA SCUDERIA – THE GRANARY AND STABLES
The building is a rare example of a 16th-century barchessa (granary and stables), of
exceptional architectural lines.
Original arches defined by elegant pilasters line the southern façade at regular
intervals and it is crowned by a denticulate cornice.
Internally the rooms are decorated with extraordinary wooden cross-vaulted and
barrel-vaulted ceilings.
The barchessa along with the villa, form a complex of significant historical-architectural
interest.
Today the building is largely neglected, but the walls and bearing walls are in a good
state of conservation.
During the 2006/2007 academic year, a group of young Italian engineers from the
University of Padua wrote up an in-depth, detailed study-project for renovating the
barchessa.

THE CHURCH
The small church is a precious example of an ancient chapel, the distinguishing traits of
the floorplan are still well-preserved. It has an elegant façade, characterized by four Ionic
semicolumns supporting a moulded trabeation and pediment.
On the inside, the altar is decorated with three sculptures of “The Virgin Mary and Child”
and two angels.
THE TOWER
The tower provides an extraordinary example of a 16th-century dovecote-sparrow
tower, still intact.
It is organized on 5 levels: on the ground floor is a large, arched opening which allowed
access from the countryside to the vaulted space; at the height of the fourth string-course
the tower widens into elegant small, suspended arches, concluding with a Ghibelline-style
battlement.
