Bhangra is a folk dance and music genre that originated in the Punjab region of South Asia. It fuses Punjabi folk music with Western popular music styles like pop, disco, and hip hop. Traditionally, Bhangra involved circular group dances performed by men depicting farming work, and accompanied by drums like the dhol. It has since developed into a more individualized dance in clubs and incorporated modern music technology. Popular modern Bhangra artists in the 1980s helped commercialize the genre by fusing it with pop music.
