“I've never found an important decision made by a great organization that was
made at a point of unanimity. Significant decisions carry risks and inevitably
some will oppose it. In these settings, the great legislative leader must be artful
in handling uncomfortable decisions, and this requires rigor.” – Jim Collins

  • #10 Networking and teamwork: Required for successful careers, successful programs, evolution…Complex Problems = Complex TeamsUnique Knowledge = new solutions, new capabilities, new opportunities
  • #11 -Courage is having the quality of mind and confidence to face difficulty, uncertainty, risk and danger: In order to perform in the workplace and in industry you must have the courage to engage and solve problems.-Leadership: The ability to guide, direct and influence: Leadership skills and abilities are important to performance and execution and should constantly be developed and exercised.
  • #12 The public sector is facing challenges decreasing budgets and proving value in current and planned acquisitions for products and services. The opportunity for companies that provide services to public sector organizations is to engage in service life sustainment and extension activities. The market is no longer a place where lots of products can be proposed at the customer hoping one will stick.
  • #13 We don’t need to know exactly what we want to do in the future. The world is always changing an our ability to adjust with the world leads to significant opportunities for oneself and our communities. Being passionate about our work, leveraging resources, educating ourselves and others – are all critical to success. Having a vision of what can be and aligning our development to achieving this vision provides opportunities and challenges worth overcoming….
  • #14 What is Watson? Watson is a computing system built by a team of IBM scientists who set out to create a system that rivals a human’s ability to answer questionsposed in natural language with speed, accuracy and confidenceWatson was able to take large amounts of data, perform data analytics, and return the data.A computer system that can understand natural language and deliver a single, precise answer to a question requires the right combination of hardware and software. The future of business is in the data● Applying those innovations from Watson can help transform business models – meaningful insights from information can help anticipate and shape betterbusiness outcomes, improve business operations and boost service to customersA “smarter” way to get things done● The technology can be adapted to help solve business and societal problems – diagnose disease, handle online technical support, parse vast tracts of legaldocuments and used in various markets such as healthcare, finance and customer service._______________________________________________________________________________________________________________So if Watson is not more intelligent than humans, and doesn't even think for itself – then why build it in the first place?”The goal was not to model the human brain. The goal was to build a computer that can be more effective in understandingand interacting in natural language. It is a tool that helps humans solve problems. You want it to do deepanalysis for you and sifting through large amounts of data.” stated by IBM Watson Principal Investigator: Dr. David Ferrucci
  • #15 Knowledge: Previous dialogue centered around information – know we are focusing on the transition of the information to useable knowledge. Work in this area includes data fusion, data exploitation, data visualization…Material Science: Our products are limited by the materials used to create them. Interest in materials and nanostructures in particular….Energy: Clean energy and renewable energy is a focus for the nation. The energy solution is complex….Medicine: Continued advancement in medicine requires co-development from the STEM professional community. New sensors, medicines, non-evasive treatments, and access to up to date information is changing the way medicine is done…. (Last year I attended a conference were the current state of regenerative medicine was discussed. Work includes limb repair, treatments for burn victims. Regenerative medicine is providing new treatment options for our warfighters…)
