Forrester Report: Master DevOps For Faster Delivery Of Software InnovationSEBASTIEN DENES
Organizations of all sizes and in every industry face opportunities and threats caused by digitally empowered customers. Acquiring new customers — or losing existing ones — has never been easier. Companies can't afford to move fast only in some areas; the whole organization must race together toward customer obsession. This report argues that application development and delivery (AD&D) professionals must master modern application delivery practices within their organizations and apply them across their entire software portfolio to improve their odds of winning in the modern digital marketplace. This is an update of a previously published report; Forrester reviews and updates it periodically for continued relevance and accuracy.

Cloud solutions continue to grow not only in adoption but also in importance in customer IT strategies. In typical risk-averse practices, cloud solutions were initially used near the fringes of IT environments, delivering test and development functions far outside most of the core mission-critical workloads sustaining internal and external business operations. Likewise, customers in regulated industries such as healthcare or government were initially wary of the security and performance of services delivered from third-party data centers. These dynamics are changing rapidly, however, as both the customer and vendor behavior around cloud have matured considerably. Cloud providers have expanded their data center locations, added almost every flavor of regulatory compliance, and enhanced security capabilities. These developments have dramatically lowered the traditional barriers to cloud adoption, allowing customers in almost any industry to have at least the possibility of deploying most of their workloads through cloud delivery methods.
Architecture matters—to your company and to your staff. Today’s business critical solutions are the heartbeat of your company’s ability to deliver product and services, and its ability to adapt to changing business demands. These business critical solutions are completely dependent on the architecture upon which they run. The computing systems, the networks; and the enabling operating systems, databases, and middleware are the components which together make up the architecture.
A Business-Driven Approach to Mobile Enterprise SecurityJuniper Networks
For IT professionals, the mobile enterprise is the next step in a progression that started years ago with the introduction of laptop PCs, enterprise wireless access points (APs), and mobile storage devices. There are important distinctions however. The growing use of consumer technologies and cloud-based services makes mobile enterprise policy management and enforcement more granular and complex— few organizations are simply willing to ban the use of iPads or block all employees from Facebook. As soon as these technologies are accepted, decisions on who can use which technology at what time and for what purpose become more difficult to create and enforce.
Ultimately, large organizations need to think of the mobile enterprise as a new model and act accordingly. This is already happening in some industries. For example, hospitals use wireless technology and RFID tags to locate mobile equipment and roaming physicians while private health care practices are eschewing in-house servers and applications for cloud-based alternatives. At a high-level, mobile enterprise guidelines are fairly simple: create and enforce policies to enable productive behavior and minimize risk. At the same time, constantly monitor activities to measure success. Finally, use technology to automate fixes when possible.
While some vendors will take time to adjust to mobile enterprise requirements, Juniper Networks has already developed a comprehensive architecture that enables automated granular policy creation and enforcement spanning from mobile wired/wireless endpoints to the network core. As such, large organizations would be well served to evaluate Juniper Networks as they develop mobile enterprise strategies.
Strengthening Operational Resilience in Financial Services by Migrating to Go...run_frictionless
Operational resilience is a key area of focus for financial services firms, and could be thought of as the next goal in addressing systemic risk in the financial services sector. Regulators are also increasingly focused on this risk: it is recognised that despite many years of bolstering financial stability by enhancing financial resilience following the financial crisis, the shocks that come from the operational side can be as significant as the shocks from the financial side.

A Data-Driven Approach to Balance Delivery Agility with Business Risk
While there are many ways to define and measure Technical Debt, one thing is clear—it has been growing exponentially as maintenance is starved and development teams are forced to cut corners to meet increasingly unrealistic delivery schedules. CAST clearly defines Technical Debt as the cost of fixing the structural quality problems in an application that, if left unfixed, are highly likely to cause major disruption and put the business at serious risk. Once Technical Debt is measured, it can be juxtaposed with the business value of applications to inform critical tradeoffs between delivery agility and business risk.

How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

In software engineering, the right architecture is essential for robust, scalable platforms. Wix has undergone a pivotal shift from event sourcing to a CRUD-based model for its microservices. This talk will chart the course of this pivotal journey.
Event sourcing, which records state changes as immutable events, provided robust auditing and "time travel" debugging for Wix Stores' microservices. Despite its benefits, the complexity it introduced in state management slowed development. Wix responded by adopting a simpler, unified CRUD model. This talk will explore the challenges of event sourcing and the advantages of Wix's new "CRUD on steroids" approach, which streamlines API integration and domain event management while preserving data integrity and system resilience.
Participants will gain valuable insights into Wix's strategies for ensuring atomicity in database updates and event production, as well as caching, materialization, and performance optimization techniques within a distributed system.
Join us to discover how Wix has mastered the art of balancing simplicity and extensibility, and learn how the re-adoption of the modest CRUD has turbocharged their development velocity, resilience, and scalability in a high-growth environment.
