Multi-User Multi-Touch
the future is here now
Top Ten Tips for a great
Multi-Touch Experience
Some of Europe’s biggest brands and most innovative
companies are pioneering a new way to create and
engaging multi-user experiences, using multi-touch AV
technology. Breaking new ground in how to present a
diverse array of information in an exciting, interactive
format, multi-touch make it easier for consumers to
interact with brands and with each other.
For example, different ‘windows’ can be simultaneously
opened to create a multi-faceted in-store experience
that encourages greater sales, or to train employees
in a more compelling way, or to create entertainment
tools that blend games, competitions, video trailers and
product sales all in one.
Early adopters include: retailers, car showrooms, estate
agents, museums, galleries, exhibitions centres, cinemas,
sports venues, video games, casino owners, corporate
offices for demonstrations, sales and training purposes.
And multi-touch is here to stay: according to research
firm BCC,
this is a market predicted
to be worth $7.3 billion by 2018.
What is multi-user Multi-Touch? Turning theory into success
We’re all familiar with single or
dual touch technology, via our
smartphones, tablets, the check-
in screen at the local doctor’s
surgery and increasingly, laptops
and desktop computers too.
Touch technology has become
a very intuitive and familiar
way to communicate or access
information.
Multi-touch technology takes
that a step further, creating an
interactive multi-user experience
that can be applied to all kinds of
environments. The technology itself
has improved considerably over
the past few years: resistive and
infra-red touch technologies were
replaced with passive capacitive
touch (PCT). Now, we are delighted
to announce the available of the
next generation of multi-touch,
using advanced metal mesh
technology developed by 3M,
which takes response, durability
and image quality to a new level.
Advice from 3M and its Multi Touch
partners based on real-world experience:
1. Display location
Wall-mounted may be easier where space is very
constricted, but table-top designs are better for
drawing attention and make it easy for several people to
collaborate. Also look for touch technology that is easily
viewable, even in bright light.
2. Consistent touch
An unresponsive screen is very frustrating for users,
so make sure it is fast to respond and consistent
in performance. Look for zero-lag, despite how
much information is being displayed or number of
simultaneous users. Bezel-free design ensures that the
screen is touch-sensitive right to the very edges.
3. Robust and self-service
If high levels of user traffic are expected, look for a
robust system that is ‘fit and forget’. This applies to both
the hardware and the software. No-one wants a system
that constantly needs a member of staff to constantly
check if it is working properly or needs re-booting.
4. Simple and intuitive software
Multi-touch technology is all about being interactive
and intuitive, so it is essential that the software design
reflects this by being very easy to use, without requiring
any training or explanation. Look for specialists in natural
user interface design and develop – or commission –
software that will support a collaborative, multi-user
environment.
5. Keep it simple
Don’t try to do everything at once: aim for an engaging
but not overly complex user experience. The system
should also be so simple that employees can use it
without training and will become such fans that they will
encourage customers to use the system.
6. Think multi-platform
Consider that other systems or technologies may have
to be integrated, whether now or in the future. Rather
than multi-touch systems being standalone, consider
integrating them as part of your overall customer contact
strategy, for instance having the same apps available on
tablets and smartphones, as well as on the multi-touch
system.
7. An integrated approach
By linking multi-touch units to back-office systems such
as CRM and databases, multi-touch can be used to
gather all kinds of useful customer data.
8. Make it easy to update and upgrade
It should be simple to update the content without
needing specialist expertise. Ask what further support
is on offer: depending on the system provider, this can
include round-the-clock support or remote diagnostics
and software upgrades.
9. Smart branding
The furniture housing multi-touch screens lend
themselves well to colourful, impactful branding.
Examples in the market so far include screens built into
coffee tables and mobile vending machines.
10. The right support and expertise
Work with a system designer and hardware provider that
has a track-record in multi-touch and so knows what
pitfalls to avoid. Also, make sure that once installed,
there is strong on-going support.
Of course, any new technology
is only as good as how it is being
deployed, the quality of content or
applications being supported, plus
other factors such as usability and
durability. In this guide, 3M and
its partner network provide some
insight into what makes a great
multi-touch experience.

About cereno
cereno first started in 1999
(under the trading name of
ISDN Datacom Ltd), offering a
portfolio of communication and
collaboration services, design and
consultancy. Over the years, it has
expanded into the areas of web,
video and audio conferencing,
supporting clients in the UK and
worldwide. A major milestone in
its history is the recent launch of
nuVa, a sophisticated interface for
collaborative communication which
breaks new ground in the way that
people can work together in a highly
visual, interactive environment.
nuVa was created following
extensive research sponsored by
the defence industry and conducted
at the University of Cambridge,
Massachusetts Institute of
Technology and other top institutes.
Development of the technology is
now continued by cereno in-house.
Challenges
cereno realised that many
organisations struggle with the
whole collaborative process,
despite advances in technology.
Many markets are still very much
paper-based, with meetings around
a table, changes or ideas captured
on a document or drawing. This
very linear-approach causes delays
and means that information needs
to be translated into another
format to be captured (scanned,
for instance) and makes it hard for
remote contributors to play a role
without relying on costly travel. Of
course, video and web conferencing
addresses the geographic problem,
but screen-sharing of single documents – particularly
the ability to view multiple content and ‘flip’ between
them – is still a clunky, limited experience that gets in
the way of, rather than enhancing, knowledge exchange.
The answer
Jocelyn Lomer, founder of cereno, could see that there
was a potential market for a solution that overcomes
these problems: “nuVa completely emulates the
experience of a natural meeting with paper and artefacts
that stimulate creativity: the difference is that it all
happens digitally and in a high visual, interactive and
futuristic way.”
The key components of nuVa are cereno’s proprietary
software, a large format 3M multi-touch multi-user
and interactive display housed in a hydraulic stand,
creating a natural environment around which users can
huddle around to discuss and share multiple pieces of
on-screen information at the same time. These might
include CAD drawings, interactive maps, Web content
and Microsoft documents. Vertically facing the users is
a large computer monitor, which via video conferencing,
enables remote collaborators to take part in the same
meeting. They will typically also have a multi-touch or
touch screen at their end, so that they receive exactly
the same experience as everyone else involved.
The cereno solution has some very tangible benefits:
as well as engendering a more conducive collaborative
and creative environment, it encourages faster decision
making (people can agree and sign off on amendments
there and then), while also reducing unnecessary travel.
It is ideal for industries such as engineering, construction
and design, plus vertical markets such as rail, architects,
utilities or oil and gas.
Why multi-touch and 3M
Says Caroline Goatley, Marketing Manager for cereno
solutions, “People use multi-touch intuitively. We’re all
used to touch on our smartphones: multi-touch is the
next step and it’s also interactive. When people try out
the system, they can’t keep their hands off it, because
it’s so enjoyable to use. I haven’t seen anyone struggling
with it and training is minimal.”
“We chose 3M because having evaluated what was
available, 3M is the best. The metal mesh technology
provides the most natural experience, we like the look
and feel, the conductive layer is very thin, the touch
experience is consistent and performance is good even
in bright lighting: we can draw back the curtains in our
sunny demo room without any problems. The 3M 55 and
65-inch metal mesh displays are also very robust, so we
can deploy the system in confidence knowing that our
customers will find it easy and trouble-free to use.”
“Plus, the 3M reputation precedes it: as well as the
technology meeting our expectations, the support from
the UK 3M team has been excellent.”
cereno helps businesses to collaborate,
communicate and interact more effectively –
with some help from Multi-Touch Technology
Interactive multi-touch displays from 3M are helping cereno solutions to grow its business by offering its customers a
ground-breaking solution for communicating and collaborating over complex work projects. Featuring 3M proprietary
ultrafine metal mesh technology, the systems enable people to interact, brainstorm ideas and make decisions in a very
visual, real-time way. Furthermore, cereno has extended the whole solution to include remote collaborators, by using
video-conferencing integrated within its in-house developed, patented technology nuVa. Use of 3M multi-technology
is at the heart of nuVa and was chosen for its design quality and reputation.
About Riga Motor Museum
Latvia’s Riga Motor Museum
is home to a most impressive
collection of antique motor vehicles.
Among the hundred-plus models in
the collection are some extremely
rare and iconic cars, motorbikes,
buses and vans, many of which
have been lovingly restored in
the museum’s own restoration
workshop.
Launched in 1989, the 4000
square metre museum re-opened
in the summer of 2016, following
a comprehensive three-year
refurbishment project to not only to
make room for new acquisitions, but
to also take the visitor experience to
a whole new level.
This includes the use of audio-
visual technology to help tell
some of the stories behind these
amazing vehicles and the history
of the automotive industry itself.
The museum is set to be one of
the region’s most popular tourist
attractions and is likely to attract
international enthusiasts. However,
there is a serious message behind
the museum, which is funded by
the country’s road traffic safety
directorate: it aims to be a place of
learning, with a particular focus on
teaching children about automotive
engineering history, technology,
science and road traffic safety.
The challenges of creating a
compelling visitor experience
The museum realised that it had to
clearly communicate an increasingly
diverse and vast amount of
information to visitors, such as

While nuVa is a recent introduction, it is also gaining
a great deal of interest from a wide variety of
organisations. Here are a couple of comments from early
users:
“Having seen the exciting collaboration solution nuVa
supplied by cereno that delivers remote real-time
task based meetings where all data, documents and
applications can be shared simultaneously; I believe
that Amey can significantly benefit from the use
of nuVa between remote teams at our national and
international offices thereby improving real-time task
based communications, fostering design innovation and
delivering advanced project management, resulting
in improved business performance and competitive
advantage. “ (Amey).
“nuVa has revolutionised our global design meetings,
previously we had considerable issues involving the
collaborative design of industrial freezing machines
between the U.K. and Thailand...We can now collaborate
in absolute real time just as though we are in a real face
to face design meeting...delivering significant business
benefits in quality, understanding, saved time and
ultimately cost.” (Jon Trembley, Air Products).
With the development of nuVa, cereno is one of the
latest organisations in Europe demonstrating the
potential of multi-touch technology to create exciting
visual applications, develop new ways of communicating
and collaborating and to open up new market
opportunities.

Riga Motor Museum – bringing automotive
history to life using multi-touch AV
Riga Motor Museum is a highly innovative visitor attraction in Latvia’s capital city, housing one of the most
comprehensive and exciting collections of antique automobiles globally. There’s something for everyone: a fun and
educational place for children; an amazing experience for vehicle enthusiasts; or simply a great day out for visitors.
The museum, which re-opened its doors in July 2016 after an ambitious three-year redevelopment project, has put
audio-visual at the heart of its exhibit strategy, with a heavy emphasis on multi-touch technology to take the visitor
experience to a whole new level of engagement and interaction.
The multi-touch systems were provided by local audio-visual technology specialist SOLAVI, incorporating 32 inch
displays supplied by 3M and chosen for their reliability and design, including palm rejection and bezel-free edges.

telling the story behind a particular motor car and its
driver; or the evolution of the European automotive
industry, or educating children. The answer was to use
interactive AV technology to create a multi-layered
approach, allowing lots of different types and levels of
information to be relayed to visitors, whether children,
casual adult visitors or car enthusiasts.
After a thorough tender process, the museum selected
to work with local firm SOLAVI, to provide not just the
audio-visual elements, but interactive and sound systems
too. Established in 2008, SOLAVI has worked with
numerous private and public sector clients in Europe,
offering high quality sound, light and video services
and solutions. The company had prior experience in the
museum market, so was sympathetic to some of the
particular challenges involved in this project.
Says Aija Bauere, Public Relations Specialist, Riga Motor
Museum: “SOLAVI clearly showed themselves as a
professional and reliable long-term partners and we
appreciate their prompt service.”
Says Ints Berzins, founder of SOLAVI, “Museums
have very particular needs: it is essential to create an
engaging visitor experience and these days, that means
being more interactive and innovative. It’s no longer
enough to just give people a button to press. They have
high expectations, plus as floor-space is always limited,
museums have to find new ways to exhibit information,
so audio-visual has become a vital and strategic element
of the visitor experience, not just an afterthought.
“Multi-touch technology was a logical recommendation
for us to make to the museum, particularly when
thinking about children, who are already used to touch
technology through their phones and other devices.
Touch is a very intuitive way to communicate and multi-
touch takes that experience one step further, enabling
more information to be accessed, or for more than one
person to interact with the display at the same time.”
Aija Bauere adds, “Modern technology such as multi-
touch displays are essential for a museum which
positions itself as a modern, knowledge sharing and
educating institution. Interactive and entertaining, multi-
touch screens allow the museum to share information
in a more exciting way. Also, a museum’s collection
accumulates an immense amount of information: multi
touch displays make this content easily accessible.”
An exciting way to engage with visitors
However, in common with any visitor-facing technology,
it was imperative that the multi-touch systems were able
to cope with large volumes of unsupervised use. “We
chose 3M technology for several reasons. The displays
are extremely robust, so they can cope with visitors
leaning on them. I particularly like the palm rejection,
a feature which means that if someone is accidentally
leaning on the display, the screen knows not to react.
“3M displays also offer plenty of touch points and the
bezel-free design means that the AV experience goes
right to the very edge of the screen. Also, we already
knew 3M and its reputation for product quality, so when
I saw its Multi-Touch Range at the ISE exhibition in
Amsterdam, I knew we’d found the right product range
for the Riga Motor Museum project.”
What’s on show
The museum is divided into different areas, including:
the history of the car, cars from the 1920s, 30s and 40s,
the Kremlin collection, other Soviet cars, the Latvian
automotive industry, cult cars, motorsports, trucks and
other special-purpose vehicles. Multi-touch systems are
installed in each of these areas, to help tell each story
and to elevate the visitor experience beyond just fact-
giving to something more interactive, fun and immersive.
Information accessible via the multi-touch systems
is diverse, including images, text and videos, with
interactivity built-in wherever possible. For instance,
panoramic 360 degree views make it easy to zoom and
move around the interior of a vehicle, while another
feature lets the user change the colour of a car, rotate it
or alter the background. Being multi-touch, the systems
mean that more than one person can interact with
information displayed at the same time.
Each systems incorporates a 3M Multi-Touch Display
(32 Inch), linked to hidden computer processors which
link back to an overall media server. The applications and
interfaces on the multi-touch systems were especially
created for the museum.
The multi-touch systems are housed in table-style
furniture, designed to support a robust, reliable and
problem-free experience, regardless of high visitor
volumes.
Project success
Installation of all the AV, interactive and sound systems
started in September 2015 and was ready in time for the
museum’s re-opening in July 2016, ready for the 26,000
visitors who streamed through the doors in the first
month alone. Says Ints Berzins, “The museum’s directors
have told us they are very happy with the outcome of the
project.
“The multi-touch systems are already receiving a lot of
use and have performed extremely well, able to cope
with high volumes of users seven days a week. They’re
particularly popular with children visiting the museum.”
SOLAVI also reports a good relationship with 3M: “The
products have met our expectations and the 3M staff
have been very supportive at every stage of the project.
The Riga Motor Museum is a great example of how
multi-touch technology can be used in an imaginative
way to take the visitor experience to a whole new level,
making it possible to display far more information than
would be possible with traditional museum AV systems,
as well as making it fun and easy for visitors to interact
with the exhibits and each other.”
Concludes Aija Bauere, “The 3M Multi-Touch Displays
have exceeded our expectations. At first, we weren’t
sure that people would use the displays as the main
source of information, but we have been proved wrong.
It’s been particularly important for our museum, where
the main audience is families; we’ve noticed that children
use the displays intuitively. By choosing multi touch
displays, we have made our content more accessible and
fulfilled our mission of teaching and sharing knowledge.”

Azure creates a luxury, interactive experience –
with some help from Multi-Touch Technology
Interactive multi-touch systems have given Azure an engaging entertainment tool that allows clients to explore for
themselves what this award-winning luxury lifestyle company has to offer. Featuring content developed by Azure itself,
the systems use 3M multi-touch displays, with interactive solutions provider Solatys providing integration, consultancy
and project management.
About Azure
One of Europe’s top vacation
ownership specialists, Azure has
been established for more than
a decade, with a portfolio that
includes membership at the five
star Radisson Blu Resort & Spa,
Golden Sands in Malta. With
more than 5,500 members and
employing 130+ staff, Azure aims
to offer consumers a premium
holiday experience and has recently
branched out into part-ownership
of power boats, yachts and
performance cars.
Challenges
Azure is positioned firmly at the
luxury end of the market, with
affluent consumers who expect the
very best. This is why Azure has a
strategic focus on using innovative
technology wherever possible,
to help create a cutting edge
environment featuring high quality
content and materials.
For instance, Azure wanted to
create an engaging and interactive
AV experience for members – and
potential members – at its flagship
hotel in Malta, making it easy for
them to explore the potential of
everything that Azure has to offer.
“Our members want to be able to
look at information themselves and
make their own decisions, in their
own time. Our sales staff are there
to be advisors, not to do a hard sell,”
said Perry Newton, Project Director.
Perry could see the potential of
multi-touch technology to create
the immersive, multi-faceted
customer experience that he
envisaged, but when the Azure team
started researching the market,
they were disappointed with the
quality available. Says Perry: “The
displays we looked at suffered from
pixilation, lag and did not support
multiple touch points effectively,
especially in screens above 15
inches. Since our systems are in use
all day every day and need to be
able to support multiple hands at the
same time, this was not acceptable.”

The answer
Azure was on the verge of cancelling the project, but
then it came across 3M and its integration company
Solatys, a European-based provider of integrated multi-
youch solutions.
Says Perry Newton: “3M multi-touch displays performed
in the way I expected them to and this gave us the
confidence to commit to the project. The 3M displays
are a very robust build: for instance, in the first six
weeks, the systems were used every day for 12 hours
with no problems at all.
“There are cheaper displays available, but in my opinion
there is a difference between price and cost: what
matters is value. The response time is fast – as good as
an iPad – and there is no drag. This is important, because
many people are already very familiar with touch
technology through their smartphones, so have high
expectations of performance. Plus, we also have some
members who are less technically aware, so the system
has to be simple and intuitive for them to use.”
Unlike some other displays, the surface is ideally flat with
no bezel, so there is a consistent touch experience right
to the edge. “The design of the 3M displays fits well with
our purpose-built Corian table-top furniture,” says Perry
Newton.
Installation
Azure built or sourced most of the systems’ applications
and on-screen content, which will eventually be linked
to its hotel management system. This will extend the
benefits of Multi-Touch Technology beyond a sales
tool, to create an end-to-end experience for guests or
members. The main, larger multi-touch systems are
located on the sales floor, with smaller systems dotted
around the hotels.
By early summer 2015, more than 80 42-inch 3M display
had been supplied by Solatys to Azure, plus a further 17
21.5 inch displays.
Results
Says Perry Newton: “It may be early days, but the
feedback has been very positive. We don’t have to sell
to our clients; the multi-touch systems help them make
their own decisions in a visually entertaining way. For
instance, they can select different items to create their
dream holiday experience and then share that via social
media with their friends. The multi-touch systems do the
job and they do it well, consistently, time and time again.
“When I walk around the sales floor, I see people
interacting with the screens all the time and that tells me
all I need to know.”
Q: Ints, can you tell us about
SOLAVI’s background?
We founded SOLAVI in 2008.
I’d already had 16 years in the
AV industry and could see an
opportunity to create a local AV
company that focused on quality
and reliability. Today, we are a team
of seven people, including some
very talented engineers: many of
our employees are InfoComm-
certified specialists.
Q: Why do you think you’ve been
so successful?
We work hard to create excellent
solutions for our clients. As well
as having very experienced and
knowledgeable employees, we also
only work with very high quality
products. There is some local
competition, but we believe we are
the market leader in this area. We’re
looking to replicate what we’ve
done in the Baltic region in other
parts of the world.
SOLAVI Q&A for updated Best Practice
Guide
Latvia-based SOLAVI provides audio visual system design, complete solutions and consultancy services to a wide
range of clients across the Baltic region, with ambitions beyond those boundaries. Its portfolio – which spans AV,
PRO lighting and even stage equipment – includes multi-touch products from 3M. A SOLAVI project was the complete
design and installation of all the AV at the newly refurbished RIGA Motor Museum. The use of multiple multi-touch
systems was at the heart of this stunning, visually impressive high-tech project. However, this is just one of a wide
array of completed AV projects carried out by SOLAVI in recent years. We asked Ints Berzins, founder of SOLAVI
about the company and how it is using multi-touch to enhance its business success.
Q: Why is multi-touch an important part of your
portfolio?
People are already used to the touch experience through
their smartphones and other devices. We originally
worked with infra-red single touch, but it had its
limitations, so I wanted to find something better. The
latest generation of multi-touch technology gives us that.
When people try out multi-touch, they really enjoy using
it and it provides the same intuitive experience as using a
smartphone, but with the addition of multiple hands and
simultaneous users being supported.
Q: You say that big size displays play a role, why is
that?
When you have a large table or wall display, you can
invite several people to participate and interact with
each other. It’s makes a strong visual impact and is a
great way for brands to demonstrate their content.
Q: Why did you choose to work with 3M?
I knew the brand and its reputation for high quality
products, so when I met Judit from 3M at ISE and saw
the range, it was a quick decision. The products are very
high quality, reliable and we’ve been very happy with
the support we’ve had from 3M. I don’t see us using any
other manufacturer.
Q: Any advice for anyone looking at investing or
working with multi-touch products?
Take the time to compare different products, they are
not all the same. Take the opportunity to play with the
technology and try to see it in a real situation where the
technology is being used live: this will help you evaluate
any issues, such as performance in bright lighting
conditions. Number of touch points is important, but it
should not be the only deciding factor. Above all, look
for multi-touch displays and systems that are reliable and
provide a consistent, high-quality user experience.
Q: First can you tell us about
Solatys and why you set up the
company in 2008?
Serge: “Before setting up Solatys, I
worked for industrial companies for
20 years and was aware of touch
technology from its very early days.
However, when Microsoft launched
Surface, I immediately recognised
the potential of multi-touch
technology.
I could also see that combining my
development skills with multi-touch
technology and then offering that to
possible customers in my region in
France where there were no other
companies a full, integrated service
providing consultancy, hardware
and software supply and design –
was a clear business opportunity.”
Q: What kind of customers do you
work with?
“It’s wide-ranging and these days,
worldwide, with project across retail
estate, banking, medical, tourism,
hotels, office interior design and
refurbishment, automotive…even a
ski resort.”
Q: What’s the history of the 3M
relationship and why do you use its
products?
“We needed another supplier of
multi-touch technology and I was
aware of 3M in this area – having
had experience of working with 3M
small screen single touch displays
in my previous role – so I contacted
the company to find out what
was available. We tested several
3M multi-touch devices and were
convinced by the performance,
the robust design, the ability to
integrate into other solutions, plus
the global expertise and support
from 3M.
3M was also very keen to
partner with us because it could
see we really understood the
technology’s market and that we
take development of applications
specifically designed for multi-touch
very seriously.”
What do you mean by applications
specifically for multi-touch?
“A lot of the ways in which multi-
touch screens are being used today
is to access web sites. Not only are website designs
usually optimised for multi-touch, using the technology
for this application is missing a big opportunity. When
customers come to us asking for multi-touch, we always
ask them to explain in more what do they want it for and
often, what they really need is a single touch solution
based on the type of application they will run.
However, other organisations are more forward-thinking
and have invested in the development side, so that the
multi-touch experience really IS adding value to the
customer experience and will provide a proper return-
in-investment. When applied properly, multi-touch
technology can make a big impact.
It’s really important that as an industry, we all share
these success stories and best practices in general. We
need to educate end users what is possible.”
Why do you think Solatys has been so successful?
“Technical expertise is at the heart of what we do:
we don’t just offer products, we provide a complete
solution and are strong on customer advice. We will
never recommend something we do not believe we can
deliver, or if we think it is not really what the customer
needs. If you give the wrong advice, it will come back
on you in the future. We take the time to understand our
customers’ businesses, we do not focus on just selling
as much product as possible. Also, we are very strong
on a fast response time and try to resolve any customer
requests as fast as possible.”
Q: What advice would you give to a customer or
developer looking at multi-touch today?
“The design of the application must take full benefit of
the number of touch points the device is offering to be
qualify as truly ‘multi-touch’, otherwise it is useless. That
is key. Show customers what is possible, don’t just sell
them some screens. Also, start small: create one great
multi-touch system and once the value of that is proven,
you can build from that.”

  • 3. Multi-User Multi-Touch the future is here now Top Ten Tips for a great Multi-Touch Experience Some of Europe’s biggest brands and most innovative companies are pioneering a new way to create and engaging multi-user experiences, using multi-touch AV technology. Breaking new ground in how to present a diverse array of information in an exciting, interactive format, multi-touch make it easier for consumers to interact with brands and with each other. For example, different ‘windows’ can be simultaneously opened to create a multi-faceted in-store experience that encourages greater sales, or to train employees in a more compelling way, or to create entertainment tools that blend games, competitions, video trailers and product sales all in one. Early adopters include: retailers, car showrooms, estate agents, museums, galleries, exhibitions centres, cinemas, sports venues, video games, casino owners, corporate offices for demonstrations, sales and training purposes. And multi-touch is here to stay: according to research firm BCC, this is a market predicted to be worth $7.3 billion by 2018. What is multi-user Multi-Touch? Turning theory into success We’re all familiar with single or dual touch technology, via our smartphones, tablets, the check- in screen at the local doctor’s surgery and increasingly, laptops and desktop computers too. Touch technology has become a very intuitive and familiar way to communicate or access information. Multi-touch technology takes that a step further, creating an interactive multi-user experience that can be applied to all kinds of environments. The technology itself has improved considerably over the past few years: resistive and infra-red touch technologies were replaced with passive capacitive touch (PCT). Now, we are delighted to announce the available of the next generation of multi-touch, using advanced metal mesh technology developed by 3M, which takes response, durability and image quality to a new level. Advice from 3M and its Multi Touch partners based on real-world experience: 1. Display location Wall-mounted may be easier where space is very constricted, but table-top designs are better for drawing attention and make it easy for several people to collaborate. Also look for touch technology that is easily viewable, even in bright light. 2. Consistent touch An unresponsive screen is very frustrating for users, so make sure it is fast to respond and consistent in performance. Look for zero-lag, despite how much information is being displayed or number of simultaneous users. Bezel-free design ensures that the screen is touch-sensitive right to the very edges. 3. Robust and self-service If high levels of user traffic are expected, look for a robust system that is ‘fit and forget’. This applies to both the hardware and the software. No-one wants a system that constantly needs a member of staff to constantly check if it is working properly or needs re-booting. 4. Simple and intuitive software Multi-touch technology is all about being interactive and intuitive, so it is essential that the software design reflects this by being very easy to use, without requiring any training or explanation. Look for specialists in natural user interface design and develop – or commission – software that will support a collaborative, multi-user environment. 5. Keep it simple Don’t try to do everything at once: aim for an engaging but not overly complex user experience. The system should also be so simple that employees can use it without training and will become such fans that they will encourage customers to use the system. 6. Think multi-platform Consider that other systems or technologies may have to be integrated, whether now or in the future. Rather than multi-touch systems being standalone, consider integrating them as part of your overall customer contact strategy, for instance having the same apps available on tablets and smartphones, as well as on the multi-touch system. 7. An integrated approach By linking multi-touch units to back-office systems such as CRM and databases, multi-touch can be used to gather all kinds of useful customer data. 8. Make it easy to update and upgrade It should be simple to update the content without needing specialist expertise. Ask what further support is on offer: depending on the system provider, this can include round-the-clock support or remote diagnostics and software upgrades. 9. Smart branding The furniture housing multi-touch screens lend themselves well to colourful, impactful branding. Examples in the market so far include screens built into coffee tables and mobile vending machines. 10. The right support and expertise Work with a system designer and hardware provider that has a track-record in multi-touch and so knows what pitfalls to avoid. Also, make sure that once installed, there is strong on-going support. Of course, any new technology is only as good as how it is being deployed, the quality of content or applications being supported, plus other factors such as usability and durability. In this guide, 3M and its partner network provide some insight into what makes a great multi-touch experience.
  • 4. Successful examples About cereno cereno first started in 1999 (under the trading name of ISDN Datacom Ltd), offering a portfolio of communication and collaboration services, design and consultancy. Over the years, it has expanded into the areas of web, video and audio conferencing, supporting clients in the UK and worldwide. A major milestone in its history is the recent launch of nuVa, a sophisticated interface for collaborative communication which breaks new ground in the way that people can work together in a highly visual, interactive environment. nuVa was created following extensive research sponsored by the defence industry and conducted at the University of Cambridge, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and other top institutes. Development of the technology is now continued by cereno in-house. Challenges cereno realised that many organisations struggle with the whole collaborative process, despite advances in technology. Many markets are still very much paper-based, with meetings around a table, changes or ideas captured on a document or drawing. This very linear-approach causes delays and means that information needs to be translated into another format to be captured (scanned, for instance) and makes it hard for remote contributors to play a role without relying on costly travel. Of course, video and web conferencing addresses the geographic problem, but screen-sharing of single documents – particularly the ability to view multiple content and ‘flip’ between them – is still a clunky, limited experience that gets in the way of, rather than enhancing, knowledge exchange. The answer Jocelyn Lomer, founder of cereno, could see that there was a potential market for a solution that overcomes these problems: “nuVa completely emulates the experience of a natural meeting with paper and artefacts that stimulate creativity: the difference is that it all happens digitally and in a high visual, interactive and futuristic way.” The key components of nuVa are cereno’s proprietary software, a large format 3M multi-touch multi-user and interactive display housed in a hydraulic stand, creating a natural environment around which users can huddle around to discuss and share multiple pieces of on-screen information at the same time. These might include CAD drawings, interactive maps, Web content and Microsoft documents. Vertically facing the users is a large computer monitor, which via video conferencing, enables remote collaborators to take part in the same meeting. They will typically also have a multi-touch or touch screen at their end, so that they receive exactly the same experience as everyone else involved. The cereno solution has some very tangible benefits: as well as engendering a more conducive collaborative and creative environment, it encourages faster decision making (people can agree and sign off on amendments there and then), while also reducing unnecessary travel. It is ideal for industries such as engineering, construction and design, plus vertical markets such as rail, architects, utilities or oil and gas. Why multi-touch and 3M Says Caroline Goatley, Marketing Manager for cereno solutions, “People use multi-touch intuitively. We’re all used to touch on our smartphones: multi-touch is the next step and it’s also interactive. When people try out the system, they can’t keep their hands off it, because it’s so enjoyable to use. I haven’t seen anyone struggling with it and training is minimal.” “We chose 3M because having evaluated what was available, 3M is the best. The metal mesh technology provides the most natural experience, we like the look and feel, the conductive layer is very thin, the touch experience is consistent and performance is good even in bright lighting: we can draw back the curtains in our sunny demo room without any problems. The 3M 55 and 65-inch metal mesh displays are also very robust, so we can deploy the system in confidence knowing that our customers will find it easy and trouble-free to use.” “Plus, the 3M reputation precedes it: as well as the technology meeting our expectations, the support from the UK 3M team has been excellent.” cereno helps businesses to collaborate, communicate and interact more effectively – with some help from Multi-Touch Technology Interactive multi-touch displays from 3M are helping cereno solutions to grow its business by offering its customers a ground-breaking solution for communicating and collaborating over complex work projects. Featuring 3M proprietary ultrafine metal mesh technology, the systems enable people to interact, brainstorm ideas and make decisions in a very visual, real-time way. Furthermore, cereno has extended the whole solution to include remote collaborators, by using video-conferencing integrated within its in-house developed, patented technology nuVa. Use of 3M multi-technology is at the heart of nuVa and was chosen for its design quality and reputation.
  • 5. About Riga Motor Museum Latvia’s Riga Motor Museum is home to a most impressive collection of antique motor vehicles. Among the hundred-plus models in the collection are some extremely rare and iconic cars, motorbikes, buses and vans, many of which have been lovingly restored in the museum’s own restoration workshop. Launched in 1989, the 4000 square metre museum re-opened in the summer of 2016, following a comprehensive three-year refurbishment project to not only to make room for new acquisitions, but to also take the visitor experience to a whole new level. This includes the use of audio- visual technology to help tell some of the stories behind these amazing vehicles and the history of the automotive industry itself. The museum is set to be one of the region’s most popular tourist attractions and is likely to attract international enthusiasts. However, there is a serious message behind the museum, which is funded by the country’s road traffic safety directorate: it aims to be a place of learning, with a particular focus on teaching children about automotive engineering history, technology, science and road traffic safety. The challenges of creating a compelling visitor experience The museum realised that it had to clearly communicate an increasingly diverse and vast amount of information to visitors, such as Fast Facts Products 3M Multi Touch Display 55 and 65 inch Key reasons for choosing 3M user experience, performance, robust design Results successful implementation of interactive Multi-Touch System as part of a ground-breaking collaboration and communications medium Results While nuVa is a recent introduction, it is also gaining a great deal of interest from a wide variety of organisations. Here are a couple of comments from early users: “Having seen the exciting collaboration solution nuVa supplied by cereno that delivers remote real-time task based meetings where all data, documents and applications can be shared simultaneously; I believe that Amey can significantly benefit from the use of nuVa between remote teams at our national and international offices thereby improving real-time task based communications, fostering design innovation and delivering advanced project management, resulting in improved business performance and competitive advantage. “ (Amey). “nuVa has revolutionised our global design meetings, previously we had considerable issues involving the collaborative design of industrial freezing machines between the U.K. and Thailand...We can now collaborate in absolute real time just as though we are in a real face to face design meeting...delivering significant business benefits in quality, understanding, saved time and ultimately cost.” (Jon Trembley, Air Products). With the development of nuVa, cereno is one of the latest organisations in Europe demonstrating the potential of multi-touch technology to create exciting visual applications, develop new ways of communicating and collaborating and to open up new market opportunities. There’s something for everyone: a fun and educational place for children; an amazing experience for vehicle enthusiasts; or simply a great day out for visitors. The museum, which re-opened its doors in July 2016 after an ambitious three-year redevelopment project, has put audio-visual at the heart of its exhibit strategy, with a heavy emphasis on multi-touch technology to take the visitor experience to a whole new level of engagement and interaction. The multi-touch systems were provided by local audio-visual technology specialist SOLAVI, incorporating 32 inch displays supplied by 3M and chosen for their reliability and design, including palm rejection and bezel-free edges.
  • 6. Fast Facts The system integrator was SOLAVI Products 3M Multi Touch Displays 32 inch Key reasons for choosing 3M reliability, quality, palm-rejection, bezel-free design Results 30 multi-touch systems ready for museum re-launch in July 2016 telling the story behind a particular motor car and its driver; or the evolution of the European automotive industry, or educating children. The answer was to use interactive AV technology to create a multi-layered approach, allowing lots of different types and levels of information to be relayed to visitors, whether children, casual adult visitors or car enthusiasts. After a thorough tender process, the museum selected to work with local firm SOLAVI, to provide not just the audio-visual elements, but interactive and sound systems too. Established in 2008, SOLAVI has worked with numerous private and public sector clients in Europe, offering high quality sound, light and video services and solutions. The company had prior experience in the museum market, so was sympathetic to some of the particular challenges involved in this project. Says Aija Bauere, Public Relations Specialist, Riga Motor Museum: “SOLAVI clearly showed themselves as a professional and reliable long-term partners and we appreciate their prompt service.” Says Ints Berzins, founder of SOLAVI, “Museums have very particular needs: it is essential to create an engaging visitor experience and these days, that means being more interactive and innovative. It’s no longer enough to just give people a button to press. They have high expectations, plus as floor-space is always limited, museums have to find new ways to exhibit information, so audio-visual has become a vital and strategic element of the visitor experience, not just an afterthought. “Multi-touch technology was a logical recommendation for us to make to the museum, particularly when thinking about children, who are already used to touch technology through their phones and other devices. Touch is a very intuitive way to communicate and multi- touch takes that experience one step further, enabling more information to be accessed, or for more than one person to interact with the display at the same time.” Aija Bauere adds, “Modern technology such as multi- touch displays are essential for a museum which positions itself as a modern, knowledge sharing and educating institution. Interactive and entertaining, multi- touch screens allow the museum to share information in a more exciting way. Also, a museum’s collection accumulates an immense amount of information: multi touch displays make this content easily accessible.” An exciting way to engage with visitors However, in common with any visitor-facing technology, it was imperative that the multi-touch systems were able to cope with large volumes of unsupervised use. “We chose 3M technology for several reasons. The displays are extremely robust, so they can cope with visitors leaning on them. I particularly like the palm rejection, a feature which means that if someone is accidentally leaning on the display, the screen knows not to react. “3M displays also offer plenty of touch points and the bezel-free design means that the AV experience goes right to the very edge of the screen. Also, we already knew 3M and its reputation for product quality, so when I saw its Multi-Touch Range at the ISE exhibition in Amsterdam, I knew we’d found the right product range for the Riga Motor Museum project.” What’s on show The museum is divided into different areas, including: the history of the car, cars from the 1920s, 30s and 40s, the Kremlin collection, other Soviet cars, the Latvian automotive industry, cult cars, motorsports, trucks and other special-purpose vehicles. Multi-touch systems are installed in each of these areas, to help tell each story and to elevate the visitor experience beyond just fact- giving to something more interactive, fun and immersive. Information accessible via the multi-touch systems is diverse, including images, text and videos, with interactivity built-in wherever possible. For instance, panoramic 360 degree views make it easy to zoom and move around the interior of a vehicle, while another feature lets the user change the colour of a car, rotate it or alter the background. Being multi-touch, the systems mean that more than one person can interact with information displayed at the same time. Each systems incorporates a 3M Multi-Touch Display (32 Inch), linked to hidden computer processors which link back to an overall media server. The applications and interfaces on the multi-touch systems were especially created for the museum. The multi-touch systems are housed in table-style furniture, designed to support a robust, reliable and problem-free experience, regardless of high visitor volumes. Project success Installation of all the AV, interactive and sound systems started in September 2015 and was ready in time for the museum’s re-opening in July 2016, ready for the 26,000 visitors who streamed through the doors in the first month alone. Says Ints Berzins, “The museum’s directors have told us they are very happy with the outcome of the project. “The multi-touch systems are already receiving a lot of use and have performed extremely well, able to cope with high volumes of users seven days a week. They’re particularly popular with children visiting the museum.” SOLAVI also reports a good relationship with 3M: “The products have met our expectations and the 3M staff have been very supportive at every stage of the project. The Riga Motor Museum is a great example of how multi-touch technology can be used in an imaginative way to take the visitor experience to a whole new level, making it possible to display far more information than would be possible with traditional museum AV systems, as well as making it fun and easy for visitors to interact with the exhibits and each other.” Concludes Aija Bauere, “The 3M Multi-Touch Displays have exceeded our expectations. At first, we weren’t sure that people would use the displays as the main source of information, but we have been proved wrong. It’s been particularly important for our museum, where the main audience is families; we’ve noticed that children use the displays intuitively. By choosing multi touch displays, we have made our content more accessible and fulfilled our mission of teaching and sharing knowledge.” For more information: www.motormuseum.com and www.SOLAVI.lv/en
  • 7. Azure creates a luxury, interactive experience – with some help from Multi-Touch Technology Interactive multi-touch systems have given Azure an engaging entertainment tool that allows clients to explore for themselves what this award-winning luxury lifestyle company has to offer. Featuring content developed by Azure itself, the systems use 3M multi-touch displays, with interactive solutions provider Solatys providing integration, consultancy and project management. About Azure One of Europe’s top vacation ownership specialists, Azure has been established for more than a decade, with a portfolio that includes membership at the five star Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, Golden Sands in Malta. With more than 5,500 members and employing 130+ staff, Azure aims to offer consumers a premium holiday experience and has recently branched out into part-ownership of power boats, yachts and performance cars. Challenges Azure is positioned firmly at the luxury end of the market, with affluent consumers who expect the very best. This is why Azure has a strategic focus on using innovative technology wherever possible, to help create a cutting edge environment featuring high quality content and materials. For instance, Azure wanted to create an engaging and interactive AV experience for members – and potential members – at its flagship hotel in Malta, making it easy for them to explore the potential of everything that Azure has to offer. “Our members want to be able to look at information themselves and make their own decisions, in their own time. Our sales staff are there to be advisors, not to do a hard sell,” said Perry Newton, Project Director. Perry could see the potential of multi-touch technology to create the immersive, multi-faceted customer experience that he envisaged, but when the Azure team started researching the market, they were disappointed with the quality available. Says Perry: “The displays we looked at suffered from pixilation, lag and did not support multiple touch points effectively, especially in screens above 15 inches. Since our systems are in use all day every day and need to be able to support multiple hands at the same time, this was not acceptable.” Fast Facts The system integrator was Solatys www.solatys.com Products 3M Multi Touch Display 21.5 inch and 42 inch Key reasons for choosing 3M reliability, performance, bezel-free design Key reasons for choosing Solatys experience, responsiveness, willingness to go the extra mile Results successful implementation of interactive Multi-Touch System that help existing and potential members explore the Azure portfolio, with added ‘wow factor’ For more information: Azure www.azure.com.mt The answer Azure was on the verge of cancelling the project, but then it came across 3M and its integration company Solatys, a European-based provider of integrated multi- youch solutions. Says Perry Newton: “3M multi-touch displays performed in the way I expected them to and this gave us the confidence to commit to the project. The 3M displays are a very robust build: for instance, in the first six weeks, the systems were used every day for 12 hours with no problems at all. “There are cheaper displays available, but in my opinion there is a difference between price and cost: what matters is value. The response time is fast – as good as an iPad – and there is no drag. This is important, because many people are already very familiar with touch technology through their smartphones, so have high expectations of performance. Plus, we also have some members who are less technically aware, so the system has to be simple and intuitive for them to use.” Unlike some other displays, the surface is ideally flat with no bezel, so there is a consistent touch experience right to the edge. “The design of the 3M displays fits well with our purpose-built Corian table-top furniture,” says Perry Newton. Installation Azure built or sourced most of the systems’ applications and on-screen content, which will eventually be linked to its hotel management system. This will extend the benefits of Multi-Touch Technology beyond a sales tool, to create an end-to-end experience for guests or members. The main, larger multi-touch systems are located on the sales floor, with smaller systems dotted around the hotels. By early summer 2015, more than 80 42-inch 3M display had been supplied by Solatys to Azure, plus a further 17 21.5 inch displays. Results Says Perry Newton: “It may be early days, but the feedback has been very positive. We don’t have to sell to our clients; the multi-touch systems help them make their own decisions in a visually entertaining way. For instance, they can select different items to create their dream holiday experience and then share that via social media with their friends. The multi-touch systems do the job and they do it well, consistently, time and time again. “When I walk around the sales floor, I see people interacting with the screens all the time and that tells me all I need to know.”
  • 8. Q: Ints, can you tell us about SOLAVI’s background? We founded SOLAVI in 2008. I’d already had 16 years in the AV industry and could see an opportunity to create a local AV company that focused on quality and reliability. Today, we are a team of seven people, including some very talented engineers: many of our employees are InfoComm- certified specialists. Q: Why do you think you’ve been so successful? We work hard to create excellent solutions for our clients. As well as having very experienced and knowledgeable employees, we also only work with very high quality products. There is some local competition, but we believe we are the market leader in this area. We’re looking to replicate what we’ve done in the Baltic region in other parts of the world. SOLAVI Q&A for updated Best Practice Guide Latvia-based SOLAVI provides audio visual system design, complete solutions and consultancy services to a wide range of clients across the Baltic region, with ambitions beyond those boundaries. Its portfolio – which spans AV, PRO lighting and even stage equipment – includes multi-touch products from 3M. A SOLAVI project was the complete design and installation of all the AV at the newly refurbished RIGA Motor Museum. The use of multiple multi-touch systems was at the heart of this stunning, visually impressive high-tech project. However, this is just one of a wide array of completed AV projects carried out by SOLAVI in recent years. We asked Ints Berzins, founder of SOLAVI about the company and how it is using multi-touch to enhance its business success. Q: Why is multi-touch an important part of your portfolio? People are already used to the touch experience through their smartphones and other devices. We originally worked with infra-red single touch, but it had its limitations, so I wanted to find something better. The latest generation of multi-touch technology gives us that. When people try out multi-touch, they really enjoy using it and it provides the same intuitive experience as using a smartphone, but with the addition of multiple hands and simultaneous users being supported. Q: You say that big size displays play a role, why is that? When you have a large table or wall display, you can invite several people to participate and interact with each other. It’s makes a strong visual impact and is a great way for brands to demonstrate their content. Q: Why did you choose to work with 3M? I knew the brand and its reputation for high quality products, so when I met Judit from 3M at ISE and saw the range, it was a quick decision. The products are very high quality, reliable and we’ve been very happy with the support we’ve had from 3M. I don’t see us using any other manufacturer. Q: Any advice for anyone looking at investing or working with multi-touch products? Take the time to compare different products, they are not all the same. Take the opportunity to play with the technology and try to see it in a real situation where the technology is being used live: this will help you evaluate any issues, such as performance in bright lighting conditions. Number of touch points is important, but it should not be the only deciding factor. Above all, look for multi-touch displays and systems that are reliable and provide a consistent, high-quality user experience.
  • 9. Q: First can you tell us about Solatys and why you set up the company in 2008? Serge: “Before setting up Solatys, I worked for industrial companies for 20 years and was aware of touch technology from its very early days. However, when Microsoft launched Surface, I immediately recognised the potential of multi-touch technology. I could also see that combining my development skills with multi-touch technology and then offering that to possible customers in my region in France where there were no other companies a full, integrated service providing consultancy, hardware and software supply and design – was a clear business opportunity.” Q: What kind of customers do you work with? “It’s wide-ranging and these days, worldwide, with project across retail estate, banking, medical, tourism, hotels, office interior design and refurbishment, automotive…even a ski resort.” Q: What’s the history of the 3M relationship and why do you use its products? “We needed another supplier of multi-touch technology and I was aware of 3M in this area – having had experience of working with 3M small screen single touch displays in my previous role – so I contacted the company to find out what was available. We tested several 3M multi-touch devices and were convinced by the performance, the robust design, the ability to integrate into other solutions, plus the global expertise and support from 3M. 3M was also very keen to partner with us because it could see we really understood the technology’s market and that we take development of applications specifically designed for multi-touch very seriously.” What do you mean by applications specifically for multi-touch? “A lot of the ways in which multi- touch screens are being used today is to access web sites. Not only are website designs usually optimised for multi-touch, using the technology for this application is missing a big opportunity. When customers come to us asking for multi-touch, we always ask them to explain in more what do they want it for and often, what they really need is a single touch solution based on the type of application they will run. However, other organisations are more forward-thinking and have invested in the development side, so that the multi-touch experience really IS adding value to the customer experience and will provide a proper return- in-investment. When applied properly, multi-touch technology can make a big impact. It’s really important that as an industry, we all share these success stories and best practices in general. We need to educate end users what is possible.” Why do you think Solatys has been so successful? “Technical expertise is at the heart of what we do: we don’t just offer products, we provide a complete solution and are strong on customer advice. We will never recommend something we do not believe we can deliver, or if we think it is not really what the customer needs. If you give the wrong advice, it will come back on you in the future. We take the time to understand our customers’ businesses, we do not focus on just selling as much product as possible. Also, we are very strong on a fast response time and try to resolve any customer requests as fast as possible.” Q: What advice would you give to a customer or developer looking at multi-touch today? “The design of the application must take full benefit of the number of touch points the device is offering to be qualify as truly ‘multi-touch’, otherwise it is useless. That is key. Show customers what is possible, don’t just sell them some screens. Also, start small: create one great multi-touch system and once the value of that is proven, you can build from that.” Secrets of multi-touch success Solatys is one of the leading pioneers of multi-touch end user solutions in the world today. Based in France, it has worked with customers across industries and markets worldwide. Here, CEO and founder Serge Calderara shares some insight into his company’s success. Real World Experience
