Activities
 What can you do in these places?
Complete the sentences with the correct places from this list:
Shoe shop – Hospital – Toy shop – Bank - Supermarket
Example: You can buy shoes in a shoe shop.
 You can get money at the _______________________.
 You can buy toys at the __________________________.
 You can shop for food at the ___________________.
 You can find a doctor at the _________________________.
We will give students a photocopy in which there are incomplete sentences saying what can
be done in different places. The students have to complete them with the names of the places.
For example: “You can buy shoes in a shoe shop.” The sentences will be accompanied by
images so as to help students understand the meanings of unknown words.
 Complete the drawing with the missing places. Use the sentences provided.
 The bank is on the corner of Main Street and First Street.
 The chemist is between the movie theater and post office.
 The supermarket is next to the school.
 The hospital is on Second Street.
 The train station is on the corner of Central Avenue and First Street.
We will give students a photocopy in which there are sentences using prepositions of place and a
picture of a block. In the picture, some places have their names and others do not. With the
sentences and looking at the picture, the students have to put the names of the missing places.
On the blackboard, there will be flashcards with the names of prepositions and their drawings.
These flashcards were used in the previous activity, in which we introduced the prepositions on –
between – in – next to.
 Listen and draw: The students have to listen to a tape in which directions are given (using
prepositions) so as to place different places. The students have to place the places,
according to what they hear and the drawing they have in their booklet (“the shoe shop” is
already placed).
 Game: Students are asked to from three groups. In a box, the teacher has cards with
sentences, such as, “You can watch movies here.” One student from each group has to pick
a card, read it to his/her group so they can guess the place in which such an action can be
carried out.
 We will show students a drawing of a map of the zone around their school (the places do
not have their names). The students will work in groups (three) and we will give to each of
them cards with the names of the places in the map.
The students will have to decide where each place goes and one of the members of the
groups will have to paste the card in the correct place in the map. After pasting it, he/she
will have to say, for example: “This is the school.”
Matching Game: We will paste in the blackboard flashcards of famous people, occupations
and places at random positions. The students will work in groups. They have to find the
matching pictures, e.g. the picture of a firefighter with the fire station, or the picture of
Carlos Baute with the microphone.
Once they have found it, they have to tell to the rest of the class which is the relationship
between both pictures, e.g. “This is a firefighter, he works in a fire station”, “Carlos Baute
is a singer.”
