2. Introduction
A former partner at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, John S. Poulos is
now the managing partner of Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith, a law
firm in Sacramento, California. Prior to embarking on his career as a
lawyer in Sacramento, John S. Poulos attended the University of
California, Berkeley, School of Law, which is often ranked one of the top-
10 law schools in America.
In addition to producing skilled JD graduates, the UC Berkeley School of
Law is host to a number of student-initiated legal services projects.
Recently, Berkeley announced that the latest of its pro bono,
community-based student projects would address the issue of food
insecurity among students on the school’s own campus.

3. Berkley
In the initiative, named the Food Justice Project (FJP), Berkeley law
students assist qualifying students with applications for California’s
version of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP),
known statewide as CalFresh. Law students give group presentations
about the rights of people to apply for CalFresh and assist students one-
on-one with issues such as rejected applications.
In addition, law students in FJP work alongside experienced attorneys to
affect policy changes in nutritional assistance. Students who are
