John S. Poulos is a partner at the Sacramento-
based law firm, Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard and
Smith. Before working in Sacramento, John S.
Poulos served as a law clerk in the Alaska
Supreme Court.
In Alaska, the Supreme Court administers the
judicial system of the state and hears appeals
from the state’s lower courts. It is made up of five
justices who select the chief justice by a majority
vote. Once the chief justice is chosen, the other
four act as associate justices.
3. Alaskan Supreme Court
The court hears cases in Anchorage on a monthly
basis as well as every quarter in Fairbanks and
Juneau. It also meets on a bi-weekly basis to
confer on cases either submitted orally or by
brief.
The justices issue their decisions as opinions,
memorandum opinions and judgments, or orders.
Only opinions are published in the Pacific
Reporter and Alaska Reporter. Memorandum
opinions and judgments and orders can be
accessed by the public through the Alaska court
system’s website or in the office of the clerk of the
