Belonging is defined as fitting in to a particular environment or having the right personal or social
qualities to be a member of a particular group. Our belonging to or connections with people, places
and groups allows one to develop a distinct identity characterised by affiliation, acceptance and

"Birds of passage" navigate from one destination to another which emphasises the absence of a
fixed home for the migrants. The constant change of the hostel prevents Skrzynecki from finding a
place of belonging, leaving him feeling lost and confused about his sense of self. The hostel
provides a prison–like life and community group to which the migrants belong. The "barrier at the
main gate" is a metaphoric and literal barrier, giving the impression of imprisonment, sealing off the
migrants from the rest of the world. This isolation permits the migrants to a group, but not a country.
Skrzynecki uses alliteration such as, "hunger and hate" to demonstrate the migrants emotions of
other groups after their own suffering. Skrzynecki, like other migrants who would have started out
their journey with hope and optimism, feels as though he does not belong in the new land because of
the impermanent, instable environment, however he and the other migrants have certain things in
common which unite them, consequently creates a place where they belong.
In contrast with Skrzynecki's disconnection through place and identity, Anh Do's, 'The Happiest
Refugee' elucidates a more positive sense of belonging. Through the use of anecdotes, he explains

In the story "By the Waters of Babylon" by Stephen Vincent Benét John the main character of the
story learns the difference in knowledge and truth. John the son of a priest goes to the east which is
forbidden to learn more about the Place of the Gods but the truth is more than John should've
known. In John's society the most important people are the priest or the sons of priests and John is a

Freedom Writers Analysis
The Freedom Writers is a movie directed by Richard LaGravenese that showed a teacher who used
her position as a way to improve the lives of students who did not particularly have the best
opportunities (Plot Summary). In the film, Mrs. Gruwell acts as a mentor to a group of actors that
portrayed troublesome lives and issues at home. From daily fights between friend groups at school
to drive–by shootings within gangs, the kids have seen it all. Mrs. Gruwell focuses on these
hardships that the students face and uses them as a way to create coursework that is relatable to the
lives of the students while promoting a safe learning environment. Not only did she create an
interesting way for the kids to learn inside of the classroom, but she also went out of her way to
enforce principles that were from outside sources. For example: Mrs. Gruwell created a lesson plan
that involved her students writing letter to the woman who hid Anne Frank during the Holocaust,
Miep Gies. After students had written their letters, Mrs. Gruwell was able to find and transport Mrs.
Gies to the school in order to have an in–person interaction between her and the students. This
proved to be one of the most impressive parts of Mrs. Gruwell's career because the students were
able to meet someone that they truly expressed gratitude towards. In a similar way, Mrs. Gruwell
acted as a figure that the students were able to look up to and place trust in. Mrs. Gruwell was more
than just a teacher to these kids;

Martin Luther And The Protestant Reformation
The Protestant Reformation was a time of change and development throughout Catholic Europe.
The changes included religion, politics, and culture, defining Europe entirely. It took a brave person
to get change, Martin Luther who challenged the Catholic Churches in their Christian practices.
Luther argued for a change in church's power, this lead to an abundance of wars with this issue.
Reformers wanted the power to put in the hands of pastors or Christian leaders. This back and forth
problem led to the Counter Reformation, which was the intense response to Protestants. 2017
marked the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther's historic 95 theses. However, there are various
factors/leaders that contributed to the growing popularity of the Reformation, such as: Meister
Eckhart, Jan Hus, and Desiderius Erasmus.
Meister Eckhart (1260–1327) who was a German mystic, theologian and philosopher. He played a
crucial role in the reformation of Catholic Churches. His work was proven effective in leading to
Martin Luther's perspective of the reformation. Eckhart's sermons discussed man's direct contact
with the divine. He influenced many people during this time, such as: John Tauler, Henry Suso,
Nicholas of Cusa, and Eckhart Tulle. Eckhart works include: "The early Quaestionrs Parisiensis",

Allen Diles, in A Comparison of Nicholas of Pelhrimov and the Taborite Restoration with Alexander
Campbell and the American Restoration Movement, attempts to relate religious movements that
occurred more than four centuries apart: the Taborite Restoration and the American Restoration.
Further focus is place on the leaders of these movements, Nicholas of Pelhrimov and Alexander
Campbell. A connection between these two men is scarcely made; moreover, many students of
religion are ignorant to the existence of the Taborite Restoration and Nicholas of Pelhrimov. Diles'
endeavor to connect these men and the reformation movements they were involved in was lucrative,
as it connected a semi–modern movement with a little known medieval movement, but his
presentation of the connection between these movements prevents the connection from emerging in
a manner as compelling as it possibly could have. Diles composes his article in response to the
neglect of the Hussite movement, of which the Taborites formed the radical wing of, in modern
times and the often exclusion of Nicholas of Pelhrimov, an individual whom he feels was critical,

Immigration issues are not issues only encountered here in the United States, but are also issues
faced throughout the world. There have been numerous of debates on the issues of immigration in
the United States. The most controversial was the passing of a new bill in Arizona. Governor Jan
Brewer passed into Arizona legislature the SB1070, which became very controversial because of the
demands that this law was enforcing. This controversial bill gives any Arizona law enforcement
personnel full authority to stop any people who they think have reasonable suspicion of living in the

This law was sending a very strong message to all of the illegal aliens living in Arizona. The SB–
1070 was written deliberately with aggressive measures intended to promote to the estimated
460,000 illegal aliens to go home (About, 2011). The issue with some parts of the bill was that it
was racially profiling, and it promoted discrimination against mainly immigrants. The federal judge
also stopped the section of the law that made it a crime for any for any foreign resident living in the
state of Arizona to carry immigration paperwork at all times. In addition, the judge also stopped the
part where it would make it a crime for any illegal or foreign resident living in the state of Arizona
to solicit, perform, or apply for work. This gave illegal aliens living in state of Arizona a big relief to
know that those main parts of the bill were stopped, giving them the advantage to continue to move
forward with their lives instead of worrying about getting deported.

Martin Luther Martin Luther, a Christian theologian and Augustinian monk has taught and inspired
the Protestant Reformation. His translation of the Bible has helped to develop the correct version of
the German language. Martin Luther was a great man. Martin Luther was born on the 10th of
November, 1483 in Eisleben, Germany. Hans and Margaretha Luder were his parents. In 1501, he
had been enrolled in the University of Erfurt at the age of seventeen. But all of that changed during
a harsh thunderstorm where a lightning bolt struck near him on his way back to school. With terror
he yelled these words, "Help St. Anne! I 'll become a monk!" Since then, he dropped out of law
school and started attending monastery there. He would devote himself only to things like fasts,
long hour prayers, and constant confessions. He tried a lot to change this, but the more he tried to do
this for God, it always seemed that he became more aware of his sinfulness. Martin Luther
eventually ended up being good with God personally when his teacher, Johann von Staupitz,
ordered that Luther needed more work to distract him from all his thoughts. So then Luther was
ordained to the priesthood. So in the year of 1508, Martin Luther started to teach theology at the
University of Wittenberg. The difficult time of study for academic degrees and preparation for the

During the Middle Ages, Europe's religious beliefs was dominated by Catholicism, which is .......

impending split in Christianity, it called for the council of Trent, which was supposed to be a
gathering of religious authorities to help mend the gap between the splitting religion. While, the
council of Trent was good in theory, in practice it was not very successful. Higher church authorities

Fall 2017 Dialogue Assignment The Cold Equations is a short story written by Tom Godwin. Barton
is a character on a different planet and is an EDS pilot. EDS' are used for emergencies and other
calls that are urgent. In Barton's case he is flying towards Wooden, which is a planet, where six men
have been stranded, struck with a fever that could kill them without the right serum, which they did
have but with their luck, it was destroyed by a tornado. Barton's mission is to fly back to earth, get

remains did in fact belong to Caylee. Now it was Dr. Garavaglia's job to figure out how this young

Do you believe all people have a little good in them? Anne Frank did. She was a Jewish teenage girl
who went into hiding during Holocaust of World War II. She didn't want to live up to her mother's
expectations, mostly because she felt that she couldn't. All her mother wanted was for her to be
more like Margot, her older sister. In fact, she stated in her diary, "In spite of everything, I still
believe that people are really good at heart." There are many reasons why she said this. But they all
circulate around the primary idea that she was an optimistic person and tried to always see the

Remember that she is only a young teenager, and that she's likely not aware of all the danger she's
truly in. Because of this, there is a huge impact on how she thinks of others. It's a lot easier for her
to believe that people are all good at heart this way. In her diary, Anne once said "I don't think of all
the misery, but of the beauty that still remains," this quote shows how Anne recognizes all the hate
and sadness in the world, but she always tries to look past it and see the beauty that is still there.

John Wycliffe was a 14th–century English philosopher, theologian, and religious reformer, whose
egalitarian ideas and beliefs laid the foundation for the Protestant Reformation. As Peter W.
Williams notes in the World Book Advanced, Wycliffe was born sometime between 1320 and 1330
A.D. in Yorkshire, England, and was educated at Balliol College, University of Oxford (Williams).
According to Alessandro Conti in his entry in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, John
Wycliffe was trained in the "scholasticism of the medieval Roman Catholic Church," and became

and worldly, but his implication was clear, and on May 22, 1377, Pope Gregory XI issued several
bills accusing Wycliffe of heresy (Williams). In autumn of the same year, however, Parliament
requested Wycliffe's opinion on the legality of forbidding the English church to ship its riches

The piece that demonstrates a wide scope of his worldview is Laments. Jan Kochanowski expresses
his despair and emotions after the loss of his child in the form of treny. Treny are an older style of
writing that praise the life and accomplishments of those who passed, especially well–known
figures. Kochanowski's Laments can be distinguished from the typical treny for the sole reason that
the subject is a child instead of a famous or intellectual individual. However, the main character in

The film "The Freedom Writers" was released in 2007 and was directed by Richard LaGravanese.
Richard used multiple film techniques to help the viewers understand how the characters are feeling,
their relationships with other characters and what their personality is like. These techniques include
camera shots, costume, and lighting, and they were helpful to create a theme of perseverance. In one

On Sept 1, 1939, the German Army invaded Poland plunging the world into a devastating and costly
war, the effects of which were felt globally for decades after the fighting ended. South Africa was a
huge benefactor for the Allied forces during the war–– providing troops, funds, and resources, in
spite of the country itself being in a state of social disrepair. While there were multiple contributing
factors in Apartheid, World War II resulted in some of the main causes, leading to economic
inequality, nonviolent–resistance and political split. World War II was an economic boon for South

Rotterdam who was the chief proponent of liberal Catholic reform, had an ongoing concern before

Well, before the war Miep worked as the secretary for Otto Frank. Miep and Jan Gies became very
close to the Frank Family. Once the war started, Miep and other co– workers decided to help the

between subject and background, while Lievens blurs his subject to the environment. Rembrandt

event saying, "In July 1942, when thousands of Dutch Jews were being deported to concentration

Resuscitation Pablo Neruda's poem "The Chosen Ones" is a perfect incorporation of torment and
influence, acting to sadden as well as impact the reader to influence further action against
intolerance. Neruda uses allusion when referencing the years of events of significant suffering that
are important in Cuban and world history, recalling his own first hand experiences himself, and the
significance of understanding these dates and events. Neruda uses a tone that is volatile,
characterized by an increase in imagery, especially of death and violence, as the piece goes on.
Neruda uses a couplet at the end to shift the poem from lengthy description of violence and death, to
a sardonic reference of those who were killed, operating as a call to action. This poem uses allusion,
tone, and personification to exemplify violence as a result of prejudice and their legacy forgotten.
Neruda's use of historical allusion is significant as several dates mentioned are specific examples of
genocide, especially as a result of hatred towards complex institutions of race, nationality, and
religion. In this piece Neruda references several dates: 1925, 1926, 1933, 1940, 1918, 1905, and
"thousands of nineteen hundreds"(Neruda,1). Each date representative of a significantly negative
event in world history; However several dates also coincide with important years in Cuban history.
For example, in the year 1925, Gerardo Machado was elected Cuba's president, he would resist the
rise of a healthy labor movement, which he would enforce using deportation and police brutality.
Cuba's economic downfall would lead to uprisings in the future, all ultimately having Cuban
legislature and law enforcement being taken advantage of, while at the same time several mass
killings world arise before crimes against humanity would be identified and prosecuted at the
International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg. Neruda's first–hand experiences with oppression and
fascism growing up in Cuba allowed many to learn from "the Chilean because he offered a way of

The idea of culture is as important as it can define who a person is, as well as the personal
characteristics and attitudes which are shared between the people that belong to it. It is a personal
