What is culture?
It’s how we work together.
The Change Event
“Every team across Microsoft must
find ways to simplify and move
faster, more efficiently,” he writes.
“Culture change means we will do
things differently. Often people
think that means everyone other
than them. In reality, it means all of
us taking a new approach and
working together to make Microsoft
better.”

…but perhaps there is another way.
For lasting change, we need viral change.
I call those who can infect an organization with viral change…
“an agent that provokes or speeds significant change or action”
Who are they?
catalysts.
Agents of change.
Shapers of positive experiences.
Breath of fresh air.
An accelerant.
Renewal is possible.
What attitude do they bring?
Willingness to serve.
Builder of confidence.
Connector of people.
Constant collaboration.
Keeper of cadence.
Continuous learning.
What characteristics do they foster and develop?
Energetic encourager.
Neutral facilitator.
Intense observation.
Relationship builder.
Process conscience.
Knowledgeable teacher.
Consistent coaching.
Willing servant.
How do you find catalysts?
Introduce Yourself and Be Visible
Listen for Language
Observe Interactions
How do catalysts use everyday interactions for maximum
cultural advantage...
How do catalysts use everyday interactions for maximum
cultural advantage...
They go beyond the mechanics.
They embed the characteristics and attitudes into events.
They intentionally design positive experiences.
How do we keep our catalysts healthy?

In any society, if management is of the
wrong kind for its time, most of the people are
miserable most of the time.
In our time, we suffer from management
that is wrong for its time.
