Magistrates are lay judges who handle less serious criminal cases and some civil matters in the Magistrates' Court. They are volunteers who come from all walks of life and must pass selection tests and training. The judiciary aims to reflect the diverse communities it serves and have made progress in increasing the number of female, Black, Asian and minority ethnic magistrates. Magistrates work together in panels of three to make rulings and sentencing decisions based on the facts of each case.
