The network connects all the schools in the district through a central head end located in the high school. The head end uses a star topology to connect to the elementary schools and district office via fiber optic cables. Each workstation in the high school connects to the head end through category 5 cables up to 328 feet in length. Closets act as intermediary connection points where the category 5 cable meets the head end connection to allow devices farther than 328 feet to connect. Bridgewater Elementary is piloting a 40% wireless network with plans for the middle school to go completely wireless in a year.

- 1. Network Field Tripby: Steve Beaulieu Thanks to Matt Hillman (Director of Human Resources and Technology) Northfield Public Schools
- 2. The Head End The head end is a technical term for the main room. This is where all the schools in our district connect to the network. This room is located in the high school. The topology of the LAN (Local Area Network) network is a star, branching out from the HS to elementary schools and the district office. This hardware will get really warm so it is imperative to keep the temperature cool in here.
- 3. The cables Each elementary school is connected to the head end via fiber optic cable, these can run for miles. Each workstation in the high school (where the head end is located) is connected to the head end via category 5 cable. The recommended max length of this cable is 328 feet. Some of the rooms are farther than 328 feet away which is why there is a need for a meeting place. The closet
- 4. The closets Think of the closet as a meeting place for the computer in your classroom and the head end. Why do we need closets again? Because the category 5 cable can only run 328 feet and some rooms are farther away. It also help with organization.
- 5. Wireless Bridgewater Elementary School is piloting a wireless network in which 40% of the school runs on. They expect the middle school to be completely wireless within a year.
