Presentations & Public Speaking

Five national working groups in Sweden have been formed to study open access issues. They will analyze the current situation regarding open access from both national and international perspectives through literature reviews and stakeholder interviews. The groups will examine: 1) incentives for open access versus the current merit system, 2) funding for transitioning from subscriptions to open access publishing, 3) open access for scholarly monographs, 4) supporting open access conversion of journals, and 5) monitoring compliance with open access policies. The working groups include representation from universities, funding agencies, and the National Library of Sweden.

Five studies on open access
Five national working groups have been formed with stakeholder
representation from Swedish funding agencies, HEIs, researchers and the
National Library of Sweden.
Open Access Advisory Group
Its role is to support the National Library as coordinating body for open
access, with a focus on contributing to the open access studies initiated.

Common instructions
All working groups will use the same approach and disposition.
The reports should contain a background description and an analysis of the
current situation.
Information gathering and monitoring of the current situation should include
both a national and international perspective and be carried out through
literature reviews, and, for example, interviews, surveys, study visits etc.
A dialogue with publishers is required throughout the period of the study and
their heterogeneity is to be taken into account.
The members of the five working groups should possess a high level of
competence within the given field.

This document summarizes a content analysis of journal articles published between 2008-2012 by current permanent faculty at Canadian schools granting ALA-accredited Master's degrees in library and information studies. The analysis found that while 72% of articles were considered research, 65% of research articles and 47% of total articles were related to librarianship. Common domains studied included information access/retrieval and collections. Very few articles had librarian co-authors.

Past, present and future of scientific information

Specifically, they suggested having centralized, accessible resources; addressing issues around qualifying for shelter and accumulating funds for housing; improving access to mental health and addiction counseling; making health clinics available on bus lines in schools and shelters; increasing outreach through various community organizations; advocating for policy reform and raising public awareness; and enhancing access to communication, childcare, and transportation.

ALISSS AGM Minutes 2014

Open Access Week celebrations in EIFL partner countries

Open Access Week celebrations were held in over 60 developing countries through EIFL partnerships. Over the past year, there has been significant growth in open access repositories and journals in these countries. Advocacy efforts have led to new open access policies at 33 institutions. Events and workshops educated over 11,000 people, and new collaborations have been formed. Challenges remain in planning advocacy projects, but results show increased open access outputs and momentum toward national policy discussions.

ALISS AGM 2005 minutes

The ASSIGN group voted unanimously to become independent from ASLIB and form a new association called ALISS (Association of Librarians and Information Professionals in the Social Sciences). Jennie Grimshaw presented the 2004/05 accounts. Heather Dawson provided a summary of ASSIGN events in 2004/05. A committee was formed to negotiate ASSIGN's disaffiliation from ASLIB and oversee the establishment of ALISS. The committee appointed Jane Secker, Heather Dawson, and Jennie Grimshaw as signatories on the new bank account for ALISS. Two presentations followed on blogging.

The Midlands State University in Zimbabwe hosted a delegation from the Raoul Wallenberg Institute in Sweden to discuss establishing collaborations in areas of human rights education, research, and institutional development. The discussions focused on exploring partnerships between the two universities, particularly in benefiting the University Library and faculties like Law, Arts, Commerce, and Natural Resources Management. The Pro-Vice Chancellor highlighted the importance of a relationship with the Raoul Wallenberg Institute to benefit teaching, learning, and research at the university given the institute's expertise in human rights.

Scholarly communication

Scholarly communication refers to the process by which academics produce and share knowledge. It began with scholars meeting to discuss ideas and corresponding through letters. As numbers grew, scholarly journals emerged in 1665 to facilitate the dissemination of research. Throughout the 18th-19th centuries, journals specialized and prioritized scientific findings. Major growth occurred post-WWII. Now, issues include author rights, visibility, and new publishing models like open access, which makes research publicly available online for free. Open access aims to address the "journal crisis" of rising costs limiting access. It benefits knowledge sharing and increased citations, though some debate potential disadvantages like loss of prestige or increased plagiarism risk.

This document summarizes the history and initiatives of the Nordic Network for Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies (NIES). Text: INTRODUCTION In 2015 the first round of seminars dedicated to the history of neurosciences was held, which was coordinated by the FENS History Committee. Several European scientific institutes have collaborated on five seminars in different cities (Milan, Oxford, Venice, Paris, London) The first of these meetings was organized by the Carlo Besta Neurological Institute in Milan on April 2015. AIM The series of seminars wanted to spread an historical-scientific culture among doctors, researchers and the public, through the promotion of the historical heritage regarding neuroscience (archives, museums, libraries), owned by the various biomedical and European academic institutions, giving particular attention to the involvement of students and young researchers because the past is always an example for the future. The study of History, in fact, not only allows one to know the roots and the starting point of today's medical practices, but also is an incentive and a challenge to develop new scientific research. METHODS AND INSTRUMENTS To evaluate the liking of the seminars a questionnaire has been prepared which was given to all participants, translated into different languages. The questionnaire consisted of five multiple choice and two open questions that have been used to detect not only the approval and the quality of contents of such an initiative, but also the general public opinion towards a discipline with little space in the academic education of young doctors such as history of neuroscience. RESULTS The results of the survey show that the project’s satisfaction was really high, both between doctors and researchers, as amongst students and citizens, and that these initiatives contribute to the Continuing Education in Medicine (CEM).

AHRC - International Placement Scheme - Showcase 2013

Towards National Open Access Policy in Finland

Stockholm University Press, founded 2013, publishes its first Open Access books in early 2015, and has one academic journal is already up and running. This presentation will cover the current challenges for _Stockholm University Press_, how we plan to move forward in the immediate future, and last but not least show plans for further developments. As a new player in the arena of scholarly communication, with ambitions to reach the highest international level, the competition is hard. The innovative working model with exchange of ideas and best practices through strategic international partnerships with other university presses, will build a sustainable model for publication of peer-reviewed books and journals. The aim is to create more possibilities for researchers at the university to communicate their results to a wider audience. The practice of running the press raises a number of questions: How does the library provide a reliable infrastructure worthy of academic exchange of ideas on an international level? How do we make the review process count in relation to evaluation methods of scholarly work? How do we provide a publishing service that benefits the researchers to a greater extent in comparison with traditional models? How can the library act as a centre of excellence collecting knowledge about scholarly communication in relation to the publishing entity? Stockholm University Press is now implementing an online infrastructure for a peer-review process for quality control for Open Access monographs and book chapters. The quality control workflow has been developed in close collaboration with active scholars as well as a strategic partner, a company called _Ubiquity Press_. The evaluation process managed by the editorial teams of researchers should be rigorous, transparent, efficient, and follow international guidelines about publication ethics. We believe that the researcher-led publishing approach will lead to more usage, more citations and more recognition for the work done by scholars not only in number of papers published, but also through recognition of the peer-review process by using the bibliometrics created.

1. F1000 Research was awarded a 4-year, 5.8 million euro contract by the European Commission to develop Open Research Europe (ORE), a publishing platform for research funded by the EC. 2. ORE will provide high-quality, rapid peer review and publishing of EC-funded research with no author publication costs. It will operate using open science principles like open peer review, open data, and early sharing of preprints. 3. The platform aims to be transparent in its processes and costs, lead by example in open science, and explore sustainable open access business models to potentially broaden its scope over time. Submissions to ORE will open in December 2020.
