Approximately 1 in 4 adults in the United States meets the criteria for a mental illness in a given year, while 1 in 17 experience a serious mental illness. There are some pretty staggering statistics on the topic: • 22 Veterans commit suicide everyday • Among the young, ages 10-‐24, suicide is the third leading cause of death. • Approximately 18% of suicides are adults between 45 and 64 • Approximately 18% of suicides are adults 84 and older • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) collects data about mortality in the U.S., including deaths by suicide. In 2013 (the most recent year for which full data are available), 41,149 suicides were reported, making suicide the 10th leading cause of death for Americans. He will share information on why there are so many deaths, how we can identify someone that may be exhibiting symptoms of suicidal tendencies and someone who needs (our) help.
