In this guide I provide information and tools for people to ask and answer five basic questions to create and implement their plan. Each year, people make resolutions that don’t seem to stick. This is because they are short sighted and are not grounded in a longer term plan and direction for their life. My goal in this guide is to get people thinking and planning based on what you want they want out of their life in the future and setting goals and strategies now to get there.

94. Circles
Circle of concerns: (Focus our time and
energy)
A circle of concern encompasses the
wide range of concerns we have, such as
our health, our children, problems at
work, the amount of government
borrowing, or the threat of war.
95. Concerns:
Things that worry,
bother, frustrate
Influence:
Things you can do
something about.
As we look at those things
within our circle of concern, it
becomes apparent that these are
something over which we have
no real control and other that we
can do something about.
96. Circle of influence:
A circle of
influence
encompasses those
concerns that we do
something about.
They are concerns.
That we have some
control
97. Proactive Focus on circles:
Proactive focus on issues within their
circle of influence.
They work on things they can do
something about.
The nature of their energy is doing this
is positive, enlarging and magnifying.
They increase their circle of influence.
98. How to Proactive…..?
• Change how you handle things, make
a choice to be positive and focus on
those things how you can change.
• Make a positive difference in your
family, you class, your school and
your world!
100.
HAVE’S
The circle of concern is filled with the HAVE’S.
“If I had more obedient kids…”
“If I had my degree…”
“I’ll be happy when I have my house paid off.”
101.
BE’S
The circle of influence is filled with the BE’s
I can be more patient
Be wise
Be loving
It’s the character focus.
102.
Anytime we think the problem is
"out there," that thought is the
problem.
Finding the solution is the actual way.
103.
The change model is "outside -in" -- what's out there has to change
before we can change.
The proactive approach is to change from the Inside-Out: to be
different, and by being different, to effect positive change in what's out
there.
I can be more resourceful
I can be more diligent
I can be more creative
I can be more cooperative
104. There are so many ways to work in the
Circle of Influence
To be a better listener
To be a more loving marriage partner
To be a better student
To be a more cooperative dedicated employee
105.
THE OTHER END OF
THE STICK
Before we totally shift our life focus to our Circle of
Influence, we need to consider two things in our Circle
of Concern that merit deeper thought
- Consequences
- Mistakes.
106.
Consequences
While we are free to choose our
actions, we are not free to choose the
consequences of those actions.
Consequences are governed by
natural law.
They are out in the Circle of Concern.
107.
MISTAKES
Undoubtedly, there have been times in each
of our lives when we have picked up what
we later felt was the wrong stick.
Our choices have brought consequences we
would rather have lived without.
If we had the choice to make over again, we
would make it differently.
108.
MAKING AND KEEPING
COMMITMENTS .
Our ability to make and keep commitments
The commitments we make to ourselves and to others
The power to make and keep commitments to ourselves
is the essence of developing the basic habits of
effectiveness.
Set a goal and work to achieve
it
109.
PROACTIVITY:
The Thirty Day Test.
For 30 days work only in your Circle of Influence.
o Make small commitments and keep them.
o Be a light, not a judge.
o Be a model, not a critic.
o Be part of the solution, not part of the problem.
110.
When you make a mistake, admit it,
correct it, and learn from it -- immediately.
111.
CONCLUSION.
Covey suggests some points of attention if we want
to WORK on being proactive.
Don’t suffer from the mistakes you made, be proactive
and correct. Accept that you made a mistake and take
action.
Make promises, set goals, even if they are really small
ones. It BUILDS the feeling of integrity and awareness
and feeling of self-control.
Be a model, not a critic; be part of the solution.
112. Taking the initiative
• The responsibility to make things
happen.
• Act or be acted upon.
• The difference between the people
who take initiative and who don’t like
the difference between Day and
Night.
113. Self awareness Test
How Proactive I am?
The degree to which I take initiative to improve my
current circumstances or create new one.
Develop a personal mission statement.
What you want to achieve with your beliefs and
values.
Develop a goal based on time period.
Short term.
Intermediate term.
Long term.
Editor's Notes
Our response to any mistake affects the quality of the next moment. It is important to immediately admit and correct our mistakes so that they have no power over that next moment and we are empowered again.
The commitments we make to ourselves and to others, and our integrity to those commitments, is the essence and clearest manifestation of our proactivity.
