BE A GOD PLEASING FATHER
Text: Colossians 3:18-21

Colossians 3:18-21
‘Wives, submit yourselves to your
husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
Husbands, love your wives and do not be
harsh with them.
Children, obey your parents in
everything, for this pleases the Lord.
Fathers, do not embitter your children,
or they will become discouraged.’

We have weak families, because
we have weak husbands, weak
fathers and weak men.

THE FATHER WHO PLEASES GOD
We can't rely on our own
experience, our own natural
father's example or television
to show us the model father.

Only God can tell us what a
father is to be, because God
the Father is the greatest
model in the universe.

1.A father who pleases God is born
again.
John 3:3
"Unless one is born again, he cannot see
the kingdom of God."

2.A father who pleases God respects and
obeys God's Word.

Psalms 119:9
"How can a young man keep his way
pure?" the psalmist asks. "By keeping it
according to Thy word"

Remember, if your children
don't learn respect for God's
Word at home, they won't
learn it at church or in Sunday
school.

3.A father who pleases God rejects the
impurities of our day.

Proverbs 21:8
“The guilty walk a crooked path; the
innocent travel a straight road.”

Proverbs 22:8
"Those who plant injustice will harvest
disaster, and their reign of terror will
come to an end."

4.A father who pleases God fears the
Lord

Proverbs 16:6
"By the fear of the Lord one keeps away
from evil."

Proverbs 22:4
"The reward of humility and the fear of
the Lord are riches, honor and life."

5.A father who pleases God is alert to
destructive influences that could
damage his home and family.

Psalm 101:2-7
‘I will be careful to live a blameless life…I
will lead a life of integrity in my own
home. I will refuse to look at anything
vile and vulgar. I hate all who deal
crookedly; I will have nothing to do
with them. I will reject perverse ideas
and stay away from every evil. I will
not tolerate people who slander their
neighbours...

Psalm 101:2-7
... I will not endure conceit and pride. I
will search for faithful people to be my
companions. Only those who are above
reproach will be allowed to serve me. I
will not allow deceivers to serve in my
house, and liars will not stay in my
presence.’

5.A father who pleases God is alert to
destructive influences that could
damage his home and family.
6.A father who pleases God loves each
child by recognizing individual worth
and potential.

Genesis 25:28
‘Isaac loved Esau because he enjoyed
eating the wild game Esau brought
home, but Rebekah loved Jacob.

Partiality is one of the great
hindrances to true love
flowing in the family.

7.A father who pleases God cultivates
good manners.
8.A father who pleases God provides for
his family through a balanced work
life.

1 Timothy 5:8
"If anyone does not provide for his own,
and especially for those of his
household, he has denied the faith, and
is worse than an unbeliever."

Two common extremes in our
society are wrong:
Some people despise work,
and others worship it.

Don't despise your work,
and don't worship it.

7.A father who pleases God cultivates
good manners.
8.A father who pleases God provides for
his family through a balanced work
life.
9.A father who pleases God monitors the
spiritual health of his children.

10. A father who pleases God loves his
children's mother.

Children need to see affection
between their parents,
because they catch more from
what they see than from what
they're taught in books.

10.A father who pleases God loves his
children's mother.
11.A father who pleases God is a godly
model.
12.A father who pleases God never quits.

‘Lord, you know my inadequacies. You
know my weakness, not only in
parenting, but in every area of my life.
I did the best I could, but it wasn't
good enough. As You broke the fishes
and the loaves to feed the five
thousand, now take my meager effort
and use it to bless my family. Make up
for the things I did wrong. Satisfy the
needs that I have not satisfied…

…Wrap Your great arms around my
children and draw them close to You.
Be there when they stand at the great
crossroads between right and wrong.
All I can give is my best; and I've done
that. Therefore, I submit to You my
children and myself and the job I did as
a parent; the outcome now belongs to
You.’

Whatever your situation,
you can be a
Father who pleases God.
