My Life With God
The Fourth and Fifth
  Commandment
INTRODUCTION
Joe has a curfew of 10 PM. He obeys, but
pouts and complains. Joe's dad always
speeds on the way to work and has
    several tickets and complains every
chance he gets about the cops. Joe's little
sister does everything she needs to for
Sunday School, but she tells her mom
how much she hates doing it. Joe is nice
in public, but tells his little sister that he
hates her and makes fun of her in private.
Each obeys what is required of them, but
they do it reluctantly. Are they breaking
          commandments or not?
THE FOURTH COMMANDMENT
Honor your father and mother, that it
may go well with you and that you may
enjoy long life on the earth.

          What does this mean?
We should fear and love God that we do not
dishonor or anger our parents and others in
authority, but honor, serve and obey them
and give them love and respect.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD

    Who are the people whom
God places in authority over us?
Ephesians 6:1- 2
1 Children, obey your parents in the
Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your
father and mother”—which is the first
   commandment with a promise—
God gives parents or legal guardians
authority over me. Who are your parents?
They are the ones that take care of
you, feed you, and clothe you. Often they
are the ones who gave birth to you. Even if
you live with a brother or
sister, grandparents or foster parents -
those in charge of you are your "parents".
Hebrews 13:7,17
7 Remember your leaders, who spoke the
word of God to you. Consider the outcome
of their way of life and imitate their faith.
17 Obey your leaders and submit to their
authority. They keep watch over you as
men who must give an account. Obey
them so that their work will be a joy, not a
burden, for that would be of no advantage
                    to you.
God gives people in church authority
over me. People hold many different
offices in the church. Some of them
are pastors, ay school or Sunday
    School teachers, elders, circuit
pastors, etc. While humans serve in
these positions, they are put there by
                  God.
1 Peter 2:13-14
13 Submit yourselves for the Lord‟s sake
to every authority instituted among men:
whether to the king, as the supreme
authority, 14 or to governors, who are sent
by him to punish those who do wrong and
to commend those who do right.
God gives people in government authority
over me. There are many levels of
                government:
local, national, police, army, fire fighters -
even public schools and those teachers.
No matter who the government requires
me to obey, God has placed that authority
                  over me.
God places people in authority over me in
the home, my church, and my
             government.
GOD’S WORD IN MY LIFE
    Agree or disagree and why?
Parents that don't let their kids date until
they are at least 15 are too old fashion.

      Agree or disagree and why?
George said, "I think it's stupid that the
government says I have to wear a seat
belt in my car, so I'm not going to do it."
STUDYING GOD’S WORD

How does God bless us through those
      he places over us?
2 Timothy 4:16
At my first defense, no one came to my
support, but everyone deserted me. May it
        not be held against them.
God places people in authority over me in
the church to teach me his saving word.
(care of my soul). There are many ways
that the people at church care for your soul.
Give an extensive list of how your church
serves Christians from cradle to grave.
Imagine that you were in a country like
China or Iran. There would be no church
and no people to feed you with God's Word.
You would be all alone without any help or
                  guidance.
Romans 13:3
For rulers hold no terror for those who do
right, but for those who do wrong. Do you
want to be free from fear of the one in
authority? Then do what is right and he will
                 commend you.
God places people over me in the
government to keep law and order. (care of
my body). There are countless ways that
the government cares for your body: (be
creative in your list) - imagine if there were
no police, no fire department, no judges, no
public schools. God cares for our bodies
          through the government.
1 Timothy 5:8
If anyone does not provide for his
relatives, and especially for his immediate
family, he has denied the faith and is worse
             than an unbeliever.
God places people over my body and
soul. At this point in your life, you owe
virtually everything to those who God
has chosen to be placed over you in
your home. Just think about all that
they provide for your body. (list) Most
important of all, they also tell you about
your savior Jesus and provide ways for
you to grow in that knowledge. Imagine
 you didn't have a home for a moment -
no food, no shelter - appreciate your
                 blessings.
God places these people over me to
provide many wonderful blessings both
for my body and my soul.
God wants us to obey all of His commands.
If our parents or someone else in authority
tells us to break a commandment, how
         would God have us respond?

Acts 5:29 - We must obey God rather than
men!
How does this passage help you in your
              decision?
THE FIFTH COMMANDMENT
         You shall not murder.

          What does this mean?

We should fear and love God that we do not
hurt or harm our neighbor in his body, but
help and befriend to them in every bodily
                   need.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD

Why is life so precious and who alone
has the right to end life?
Genesis 2:7
the LORD God formed the man from the
dust of the ground and breathed into his
nostrils the breath of life, and the man
          became a living being.
Life is a precious gift of God. If the
president of the US was to give you a
Rolex, you would be proud of it, treat it with
care so that it is not stolen or broken. You
do it because it is expensive and because
of the important person who gave it - so too
                    with life.
Genesis 9:5-6
5 And for your lifeblood I will surely demand
an accounting. I will demand an accounting
from every animal. And from each
man, too, I will demand an accounting for
the life of his fellow man. 6 “Whoever sheds
the blood of man, by man shall his blood be
shed; for in the image of God has God
                    made man.
If anyone takes a life he has to answer to
God. If I give a bike to my seven year old
daughter, you don't have the right to come
and take it. I have the right to take it
back, but you have no claim on my
daughter‟s bike. God says, "Keep your
hands off of your neighbors life - if you do
take it you will have to answer to me the
                 giver of life."
Romans 13:4
For he is God‟s servant to do you good.
But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he
does not bear the sword for nothing. He
is God‟s servant, an agent of wrath to
  bring punishment on the wrongdoer.
God gives the government the right to
take life. It‟s a sin for me to take a gun
and shoot another human being. But if I
am a police officer and am protecting
myself and others from a person that is
threatening life, then the government has
a right to end that life. Execution falls
          under the same category.
Life is so important because it is a
precious gift of God and no one
else has a right to take it but the
government that God appointed.
CHRISTIAN VOCABULARY
Suicide - self murder - taking your own life
against God's will.
Murder - taking someone's life whether
intentionally or by neglect - cutting
someone's "time of grace" short
Capital Punishment - the "death penalty"
- the governments right as God's
instrument to punish those who have
committed crimes worthy of death
STUDYING GOD'S WORD

When do people sin against this
    commandment?
Genesis 4:2-15
2 Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.
Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the
soil. 3 In the course of time Cain brought
some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to
the LORD. 4 But Abel brought fat portions
from some of the firstborn of his flock. The
LORD looked with favor on Abel and his
offering, 5 but on Cain and his offering he
did not look with favor. So Cain was very
angry, and his face was downcast.
Genesis 4:2-15
6 Then the LORD said to Cain, “Why are
you angry? Why is your face downcast?
7 If you do what is right, will you not be
accepted? But if you do not do what is
right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires
to have you, but you must master it.” 8 Now
Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let‟s go out to
the field.” And while they were in the
field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and
                    killed him.
Genesis 4:2-15
9 Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is
your brother Abel?” “I don‟t know,” he
replied. “Am I my brother‟s keeper?”
10 The LORD said, “What have you done?
Listen! Your brother‟s blood cries out to me
from the ground. 11 Now you are under a
curse and driven from the ground, which
opened its mouth to receive your brother‟s
           blood from your hand.
Genesis 4:2-15
12 When you work the ground, it will no
longer yield its crops for you. You will be a
restless wanderer on the earth.” 13 Cain
said to the LORD, “My punishment is more
than I can bear. 14 Today you are driving me
from the land, and I will be hidden from your
presence; I will be a restless wanderer on
the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”
15 But the LORD said to him, “Not so; if
anyone kills Cain, he will suffer vengeance
seven times over.” Then the LORD put a
mark on Cain so that no one who found him
                  would kill him.
By taking another person‟s life. There
are many ways that people carry out
        murder. Sometimes on
 purpose, sometimes by accident and
sometimes they even hire others to kill
for them. Sometimes people want to
have a doctor kill an elderly parent or
spouse or someone suffering. This is
called "mercy killing", but it is still
               murder.
Matthew 27:5
So Judas threw the money into the
temple and left. Then he went away
       and hanged himself.
By taking your own life (suicide). There is a
doctor in Michigan known as doctor death.
If a person has a medical disorder and
would like to leave this world in a painless
manner, the doctor will aid in a suicide.
When we commit suicide, we tell God that
our life is not precious and we are in control
rather than God. We may leave this life
easy enough, but there will be hell to pay in
the next because we die by willfully sinning
                  against God.

  My Life With God
The Sixth Commandment
INTRODUCTION
Movies, TV shows and music are rated for
content. Why? What does PG -13 usually
mean? What does R mean? What does
XXX mean? Why do think things that are
put out there for viewing or purchase need
to be rated? If you told your parents you
were going to an R rated movie or
purchasing a "parental warning" CD, what
do think they would say? Is that telling you
something about our society and its
        obsessions with what sells!
THE SIXTH COMMANDMENT
      You shall not commit adultery.

          What does this mean?
We should fear and love God that we do not
that we lead a pure and decent life in words
and actions, and that husband and wife love
           and honor each other.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD

How did marriage start and what does
   God want marriage to be?
Genesis 2:21-24
21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall
into a deep sleep; and while he was
sleeping, he took one of the man‟s ribs and
closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the
LORD God made a woman from the rib he
had taken out of the man, and he brought
her to the man. 23 The man said, “This is
now bone of my bones and flesh of my
flesh; she shall be called „woman,‟ for she
was taken out of man.” 24 For this reason a
man will leave his father and mother and be
united to his wife, and they will become one
                     flesh.
Marriage started when God made Eve and
gave her to Adam. A so-called "marriage
expert" said that "Marriage developed from
a desire of Neanderthal men wanting to
have someone take care of their home for
them as they went hunting." Therefore
there is no need to stay married for
life, rules change. The expert is no expert
at all. She doesn't even know where
marriage came from or God's intent in this
                    union.
Matthew 19:5-6
5 and said, „For this reason a man will
leave his father and mother and be united
to his wife, and the two will become one
flesh‟? 6 So they are no longer two, but
one. Therefore what God has joined
      together, let man not separate.”
God intended marriage to be the union of
one man and one woman. If the Milton
Bradley Company asked you to create a
game, you would have the right to make
the rules so that the game is played the
way that it is supposed to be played. God
created marriage, and he set the
guidelines so people would be happy in
marriage. He says only one man and one
woman are to participate in a marriage.
      Any variation thereof is sinful.
God started marriage with Adam and
Eve and he intended it to be the union
of one man and one woman for life.
GOD’S WORD IN MY LIFE

Agree or disagree and why? If two
men or two women really love each other
and will be faithful through life, we should
accept it as a true marriage.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD

How do married people ruin God's
     gift of marriage?
Colossians 3:19
Husbands, love your wives and do not be
           harsh with them.
By treating each other badly instead of a
loving companion. If you spent hours upon
hours of completing a huge, elaborate
painting, you would be excited about it and
want to show it to someone you loved. How
would you feel if instead of praising your
work, that person pointed out all of your
mistakes instead of looking at all the good.
So too in a relationship - rejoice in
          good, don't point out bad.
Matthew 19:9
I tell you that anyone who divorces his
wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and
marries another woman commits adultery.”
Getting a divorce for reasons other than
 unfaithfulness or desertion. Some people
argue that if you are unhappy in a
marriage, it's better to get a divorce than to
be unhappy. Some even say that if you find
another person who is more to your liking to
"go for it." This is totally ungodly and shows
that you have no commitment or love for
God who is pleased when we love our
             spouse as ourselves.
1 Corinthians7:15
15 But if the unbeliever leaves, let him
do so. A believing man or woman is not
bound in such circumstances; God has
called us to live in peace.
Married people break this commandment
when they are harsh with each other,
      commit adultery or desert their
               spouse.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD

How can someone who is unmarried break
          this commandment?
Ephesians 5:3-4
3 But among you there must not be even a
hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of
impurity, or of greed, because these are
improper for God‟s holy people. 4 Nor
should there be obscenity, foolish talk or
coarse joking, which are out of place, but
             rather thanksgiving.
We should not even give the impression
of sexual immorality. A man and a
woman are getting ready to get married
and decide to live together. They say
that they are not sleeping together. Is
this a God pleasing situation? Why or
                why not?
Matthew 5:28
But I tell you that anyone who looks at a
woman lustfully has already committed
adultery with her in his heart.
God wants our thoughts to be pure. A man
reasons that looking at pornography on the
internet isn't bad because he isn't hurting
anybody. A woman reads magazines that
show men in underwear and tells all about
10 ways to make the guys go wild about
you and notice. God wants our thoughts to
                   be pure.
2 Timothy 2:22
Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue
righteousness, faith, love and peace, along
with those who call on the Lord out of a
                 pure heart.
1 Corinthians 6:18
Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a
man commits are outside his body, but he
who sins sexually sins against his own
                   body.
God wants us to avoid people and places
and everything else that tempts us to sin
against this commandment. In order to
make a jug of water red, all you need is one
drop of red food coloring. In order to make
a person's whole being pure. Don't look at
sexually explicit materials. Don't listen to
coarse jokes and music. Don't sexually
defile your body in any way.
We break this commandment when we
give into sexual thoughts, actions and
associate ourselves with bad company .
GOD'S STANDARDS
1. Avoid all temptation to sexual sin.
2. Be clean in what we think and say about sex.
3. Use your sexuality in ways that are pleasing to Him.
CHRISTIAN VOCABULARY
Adultery - sexual intercourse with someone
other than the person to whom one is
married; impure words or thoughts in
respect to sexual matters.
Sensuality - allowing oneself to have sinful
bodily pleasure.
Divorce - to end a marriage officially in a
court of law.
Sexual Immorality - acting contrary to
God's moral law; a sexual sin with our body
1 Corinthians 3:18
Do not deceive yourselves. If any one
of you thinks he is wise by the
standards of this age, he should
become a “fool” so that he may
            become wise.
What is this age?
Concerning sex and sexuality, do the
standards of "this age" often match God's
requirements noted above? How are they
alike or different:
1. In the movies and on television or the
internet?
2. In school?
3. How are these ideas deceitful?

4. What is God's idea of "safe sex"?
GOD'S WORD IN MY LIFE
Evaluate: Melissa said, "I'll dress the
way that I want to. If guys gawk and lust
after me, it's their own fault."

Agree or disagree and why? God
doesn't want us to talk about or think
about sex.

Evaluate: Jeannie said, "The best gift I
can give my husband on my wedding
night is my virginity."

But if I am a police officer and am protecting myself and others from a person that is threatening life, then the government has a right to end that life. Execution falls under the same category.

Life is soimportant because it is a precious gift of God and no one else has a right to take it but the government that God appointed.

Genesis 4:2-15 2 Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. 3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD. 4 But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.

Genesis 4:2-15 6 Then the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it.” 8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let‟s go out to the field.” And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.

Genesis 4:2-15 9Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I don‟t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother‟s keeper?” 10 The LORD said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother‟s blood cries out to me from the ground. 11 Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother‟s blood from your hand.

Genesis 4:2-15 12 When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.” 13 Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is more than I can bear. 14 Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.” 15 But the LORD said to him, “Not so; if anyone kills Cain, he will suffer vengeance seven times over.” Then the LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.

By taking anotherperson‟s life. There are many ways that people carry out murder. Sometimes on purpose, sometimes by accident and sometimes they even hire others to kill for them. Sometimes people want to have a doctor kill an elderly parent or spouse or someone suffering. This is called "mercy killing", but it is still murder.

By taking yourown life (suicide). There is a doctor in Michigan known as doctor death. If a person has a medical disorder and would like to leave this world in a painless manner, the doctor will aid in a suicide. When we commit suicide, we tell God that our life is not precious and we are in control rather than God. We may leave this life easy enough, but there will be hell to pay in the next because we die by willfully sinning against God.

INTRODUCTION Movies, TV showsand music are rated for content. Why? What does PG -13 usually mean? What does R mean? What does XXX mean? Why do think things that are put out there for viewing or purchase need to be rated? If you told your parents you were going to an R rated movie or purchasing a "parental warning" CD, what do think they would say? Is that telling you something about our society and its obsessions with what sells!

Genesis 2:21-24 21 Sothe LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man‟s ribs and closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. 23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called „woman,‟ for she was taken out of man.” 24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

Marriage started whenGod made Eve and gave her to Adam. A so-called "marriage expert" said that "Marriage developed from a desire of Neanderthal men wanting to have someone take care of their home for them as they went hunting." Therefore there is no need to stay married for life, rules change. The expert is no expert at all. She doesn't even know where marriage came from or God's intent in this union.
  • 47.
Matthew 19:5-6 5 and said, „For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh‟? 6 So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.”

God intended marriageto be the union of one man and one woman. If the Milton Bradley Company asked you to create a game, you would have the right to make the rules so that the game is played the way that it is supposed to be played. God created marriage, and he set the guidelines so people would be happy in marriage. He says only one man and one woman are to participate in a marriage. Any variation thereof is sinful.

If you spent hours upon hours of completing a huge, elaborate painting, you would be excited about it and want to show it to someone you loved. Getting a divorcefor reasons other than unfaithfulness or desertion. Some people argue that if you are unhappy in a marriage, it's better to get a divorce than to be unhappy. Some even say that if you find another person who is more to your liking to "go for it." This is totally ungodly and shows that you have no commitment or love for God who is pleased when we love our spouse as ourselves.
