BAPTISM AND DELIVERANCE
Text: Exodus 14:1-16, 21-28

Exodus 14:1-16, 21-28
‘Then the LORD gave these instructions to
Moses: “Order the Israelites to turn back
and camp…Then Pharaoh will think, ‘The
Israelites are confused … After this the
Egyptians will know that I am the LORD!”…

… So Pharaoh harnessed his chariot and called
up his troops. He took with him 600 of Egypt’s
best chariots, along with the rest of the
chariots of Egypt, each with its
commander…so he chased after the people of
Israel, who had left with fists raised in
defiance…

…The Egyptians chased after them with all
the forces in Pharaoh’s army—all his horses
and chariots, his charioteers, and his
troops…As Pharaoh approached, the people
of Israel looked up and panicked when they
saw the Egyptians overtaking them…

… They cried out to the LORD, and they said to
Moses, “Why did you bring us out here to die
in the wilderness? Weren’t there enough
graves for us in Egypt? What have you done to
us? Why did you make us leave Egypt? Didn’t
we tell you this would happen while we were
still in Egypt?...

… We said, ‘Leave us alone! Let us be slaves
to the Egyptians. It’s better to be a slave in
Egypt than a corpse in the wilderness!’”…

… But Moses told the people, “Don’t be
afraid. Just stand still and watch the LORD
rescue you today. The Egyptians you see
today will never be seen again. The LORD
himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.”…

… Then the LORD said to Moses, “Why are you
crying out to me? Tell the people to get
moving! Pick up your staff and raise your hand
over the sea. Divide the water so the Israelites
can walk through the middle of the sea on dry
ground. … all Egypt will see my glory and know
that I am the LORD!”…

… Then Moses raised his hand over the sea,
and the LORD opened up a path through the
water with a strong east wind. The wind blew
all that night, turning the seabed into dry land.
So the people of Israel walked through the
middle of the sea on dry ground, with walls of
water on each side!...

… Then the Egyptians—all of Pharaoh’s horses,
chariots, and charioteers—chased them into
the middle of the sea. But just before dawn
the LORD looked down on the Egyptian army
from the pillar of fire and cloud, and he threw
their forces into total confusion…

… He twisted their chariot wheels, making
their chariots difficult to drive. “Let’s get out
of here—away from these Israelites!” the
Egyptians shouted. “The LORD is fighting for
them against Egypt!”…

… When all the Israelites had reached the
other side, the LORD said to Moses, “Raise
your hand over the sea again. Then the
waters will rush back and cover the
Egyptians and their chariots and
charioteers.” …

… The Egyptians tried to escape, but the
LORD swept them into the sea. … Of all the
Egyptians who had chased the Israelites into
the sea, not a single one survived.’

Therefore, go and make disciples of all the
nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

‘Repent and be baptized, every one of you,
in the name of Jesus Christ for the
forgiveness of your sins.’

What is the significance or purpose of
baptism?
1. It speaks to us about commitment to
Christ, as our Lord and Master.
2. Baptism speaks to us about forgiveness.
3. Baptism speaks of the new life that we
can have in Christ.

We were therefore buried with him through
baptism into death in order that, just as Christ
was raised from the dead through the glory of
the Father, we too may live a new life.

like ours, as Moses led them from enslaving
death to salvation life.

How we experience victory?
1. The pursuit of the enemy

Exodus 14:5
‘When the king of Egypt was told that the
people had fled, Pharaoh and his officials
changed their minds about them and said,
"What have we done? We have let the
Israelites go and have lost their services!’

Pharaoh will think, 'The Israelites are
wandering around the land in confusion,
hemmed in by the desert.'

‘So he had his chariot made ready and took his
army with him. He took six hundred of the best
chariots, along with all the other chariots of
Egypt, with officers over all of them.’

‘Submit yourselves then to God resist the devil;
and he will flee from you.’

‘Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new
creation; the old has gone, the new has come!’

2. The power of God to make a way

Exodus 14:13-14
"Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see
the deliverance the LORD will bring you today.
The Egyptians you see today you will never see
again. The LORD will fight for you; you need
only to be still."

Exodus 14:21-22
‘Then Moses stretched out his hand over the
sea, and all that night the LORD drove the sea
back with a strong east wind and turned it into
dry land…

… The waters were divided, and the Israelites
went through the sea on dry ground, with a
wall of water on their right and on their left.’

Isaiah 43:16-17, 18-19
This is what the LORD says-- He who made a way
through the sea, a path through the mighty waters,
who drew out the chariots and horses, the army and
reinforcements together, and they lay there, never
to rise again, extinguished, snuffed out like a wick:’

"Forget the former things; do not dwell on the
past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it
springs up; do you not perceive it? I am
making a way in the desert and streams in the
wasteland.’

"Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see
the deliverance the LORD will bring you today.
............... The LORD will fight for you; you
need only to be still."

Exodus 14:11-12
"Was it because there were no graves in Egypt
that you brought us to the desert to die? What
have you done to us by bringing us out of
Egypt?

Exodus 14:11-12
‘Didn't we say to you in Egypt, 'Leave us alone;
let us serve the Egyptians'? It would have been
better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die
in the desert!’

Hebrews 11:29
‘By faith the people passed through the Red
Sea as on dry land…’

Baptism requires a step of faith.

Hebrews 10:39
‘But we are not of those who shrink back
and are destroyed, but of those who believe
and are saved.’
