In November 1979, Iranian militants stormed the US Embassy in Tehran and took 70 Americans hostage. This crisis lasted 444 days and had major foreign policy impacts. The hostages were taken in protest of US support for the recently deposed Shah of Iran, who was a close US ally. Throughout the crisis, President Carter sought diplomatic solutions but imposed sanctions. The hostages were finally released in January 1981 after Iran reached a deal with the incoming Reagan administration. This crisis continues to impact US-Iran relations today.
