Sentence
A sentence is a group of words, which expresses a complete thought.
When we make a sentence we name some person/thing and say
something about it.
Parts of a Sentence
Subject
The part, which names the person/thing we are speaking about, is
called the subject of the sentence.
Predicate
The part, which tells something about the subject, is called the predicate of
the sentence.
Example
The dog ran after the cat.
Subject Predicate
Sentence
• A complete sentence always contains a verb, expresses a complete idea
and makes sense standing alone.
Example
Andy reads quickly.
When Andy reads.
When Andy reads, he reads quickly.
Examples
Wrong: There is another theory. Which should not be ignored.
Correct: There is another theory, which should not be ignored.
Wrong: The proposal was finally reject. Although they considered it.
Correct: Although they considered the proposal, it was finally rejected.
Object
• The object completes the verb.
Kathy kicked the ball
• The object completes the preposition.
The cat is in the box
Jessica baked brownies.
He gave me the box.
Direct object and indirect object
Jessica baked brownies.
DO
Mary gave me the box.
IO DO

Complement
• A complement is a word or word group that completes the predicate
in a sentence.
• In contrast to modifiers, which are optional, complements are
required to complete the meaning of a sentence or a part of a
sentence.

Object Complement
Example
She called him an idiot * She called him.
