Basic life support
•BSL is the sequence of procedure performed to
restore the circulation of oxygenated blood after
a sudden pulmonary or cardiac arrest
•Chest compressions and pulmonary ventilation
performed by anyone who knows how to do
,anywhere immediately,without any other
equipment

CHEST COMPRESSIONS
•Place the heel of one hand in the
centre of the chest
•Place other hand on top
•Interlock fingers
•Compress the chest
•Rate 100 compression per min
•Depth 4-5 cm
•Equal compression : relaxation
•Change CPR operator every 2 min

RESCUE BREATHS
•Pinch the nose
•Take a normal breath
•Place lips over mouth
•Blow until the chest rises
•Take about 1 second
•Allow chest to fall
•Repeat

Automated External
Defibrillator (AED)
•Many victims who receive BLS need an
AED
Often in cardiac arrest heart has
abnormal rhythm
•Use AED with unresponsive victim who
is not breathing normally
AED may correct abnormal heart
rhythm
© Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences
24
Faculty of Pharmacy©M. S. Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences
24
How AEDs Work
•Automatically checks victim’s
heart rhythm to detect fibrillation
•Advises whether victim needs a
shock
•
The shock (defibrillation) is an
attempt to return heart to normal
rhythm
© Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences
25
Faculty of Pharmacy©M. S. Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences
25
HOW TO USE AN AED
1. Turn on AED
2. Place pads on victim
3. Analysis the heart rhythm
4. Shock if prompted

CONTINUE RESUSCITATION UNTIL….
•Qualified help arrives and takes over
•The victim starts breathing normally
•Rescuer becomes exhausted

29

29
Why CPR may fail?
•Delay in starting
•Improper procedure(airway is not
cleared)
•Terminal disease or unmanageable
disease

COMPLICATIONS OF CPR
•Vomiting
•Aspiration
•Wipe vomit from mouth with
fingers wrapped in a cloth
•Reposition and resume CPR
