Common Barberry is an alien thorny bush that can grow up to 3 meters tall and produces unpleasant smelling yellow flowers in mid-spring to early summer. It has red oblong berries that were once cultivated but is now banned in some areas as it can host wheat rust fungi. First Nations people used barberry medicinally to treat various ailments. Japanese Barberry is a similar but smaller invasive shrub originally from Japan with yellow clustered flowers and bright red egg-shaped berries that persists into winter. Both barberry species were found in Altona Forest.
