Bamiyan is a town located at an altitude of about 9,200 feet in central Afghanistan, with a population of around 61,863. It was historically important for its large statues of Buddha carved into surrounding sandstone cliffs dating back to the 2nd-5th centuries AD. The Taliban destroyed the statues in 2001. The town remains culturally significant as the center of the Hazara ethnic group, with locals practicing traditional agriculture and music while speaking various dialects including Hazaragi. Bamiyan University reopened after Taliban rule to educate the region's population.
