This document summarizes a study that tested methods to reduce bat fatalities at wind turbines. Researchers altered the operational parameters of 21 turbines at a wind farm in Alberta, Canada during peak bat migration season. For 15 turbines, the wind speed needed for the rotors to start turning was increased from 4 to 5.5 m/s, keeping the rotors motionless in lower winds. For 6 turbines, the blade pitch angle was adjusted to reduce rotor speed in low winds. Both methods significantly reduced bat fatalities, by 60% and 58% respectively, compared to unaltered control turbines.
