Dimsi have developed a backup solution for Virtual Machines based on KVM hypervisors. Every layer of the product uses Open Source libraries or components (Python, VueJS, Celery, Borg Backup, Redis, Socketio, Flask). There is no agent needed on the VMs. Dimsi have implemented a feature to group the hosts based on their use (CloudStack Hosts or Management Hosts) and apply specific policies to the groups. In the CloudStack context, this product can help you backup and restore all your VMs easily if the hypervisors are KVM-based. Moreover, restoring the VMs is effortless because KVM and CloudStack use the same id for the VM disks, so no need to hack the database to match them.

What CloudStackers Need To Know About LINSTOR/DRBDShapeBlue
Philipp explains the best performing Open Source software-defined storage software available to Apache CloudStack today. It consists of two well-concerted components. LINSTOR and DRBD. Each of them also has its independent use cases, where it is deployed alone. In this presentation, the combination of these two is examined. They form the control plane and the data plane of the SDS. We will touch on: Performance, scalability, hyper-convergence (data-locality for high IO performance), resiliency through data replication (synchronous within a site, 2-way, 3-way, or more), snapshots, backup (to S3), encryption at rest, deduplication, compression, placement policies (regarding failure domains), management CLI and webGUI, monitoring interface, self-healing (restoring redundancy after device/node failure), the federation of multiple sites (async mirroring and repeatedly snapshot difference shipping), QoS control (noisy neighbors limitation) and of course: complete integration with CloudStack for KVM guests. It is Open Source software following the Unix philosophy. Each component solves one task, made for maximal re-usability. The solution leverages the Linux kernel, LVM and/or ZFS, and many Open Source software libraries. Building on these giant Open Source foundations, not only saves LINBIT from re-inventing the wheels, it also empowers your day 2 operation teams since they are already familiar with these technologies.
Philipp Reisner is one of the founders and CEO of LINBIT in Vienna/Austria. He holds a Dipl.-Ing. (comparable to MSc) degree in computer science from Technical University in Vienna. KVM High Availability Regardless of Storage - Gabriel Brascher, VP of Apache ...ShapeBlue
Having High Availability enabled for KVM Hosts can improve greatly the QoS by handling (fence/recover) a problematic Host as well as re-starting its stopped VMs on healthy hosts. However, there is a limitation on CloudStack HA for KVM; it relies mainly on NFS heartbeat script checks. This Talk illustrates how CloudStack HA works for KVM hosts and it presents a way of improving its implementation in a way that KVM HA works with any storage system pluggable on KVM, not just NFS.

Container Network Interface: Network Plugins for Kubernetes and beyondKubeAcademy
With the rise of modern containers comes new problems to solve – especially in networking. Numerous container SDN solutions have recently entered the market, each best suited for a particular environment. Combined with multiple container runtimes and orchestrators available today, there exists a need for a common layer to allow interoperability between them and the network solutions.
As different environments demand different networking solutions, multiple vendors and viewpoints look to a specification to help guide interoperability. Container Network Interface (CNI) is a specification started by CoreOS with the input from the wider open source community aimed to make network plugins interoperable between container execution engines. It aims to be as common and vendor-neutral as possible to support a wide variety of networking options — from MACVLAN to modern SDNs such as Weave and flannel.
CNI is growing in popularity. It got its start as a network plugin layer for rkt, a container runtime from CoreOS. Today rkt ships with multiple CNI plugins allowing users to take advantage of virtual switching, MACVLAN and IPVLAN as well as multiple IP management strategies, including DHCP. CNI is getting even wider adoption with Kubernetes adding support for it. Kubernetes accelerates development cycles while simplifying operations, and with support for CNI is taking the next step toward a common ground for networking. For continued success toward interoperability, Kubernetes users can come to this session to learn the CNI basics.
This talk will cover the CNI interface, including an example of how to build a simple plugin. It will also show Kubernetes users how CNI can be used to solve their networking challenges and how they can get involved.

Hitchhiker's guide to Cloud-Native Build Pipelines and Infrastructure as CodeRobert van Mölken
As more and more application deployments move to the cloud the scale and complexity becomes harder to manage. Instead of a handful of large instances, you might have many smaller instances, so there are many more things you need to provision. Because of this cloud vendors provide API abstraction of their compute, storage, network and other platform services. In this talk I present a guide to provision these services, such as a Kubernetes cluster, using infrastructure as code and deploy your applications through cloud-native build pipelines. Get to know the concepts behind these DevOps practices and come hear which tools to use like Terraform and Oracle Container Pipelines to automate these laborious tasks on the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

In cloud computing environments, VMs require fast access to resources like storage and networking. The hardware that the VMs access is implemented in software and/or by passing through a dedicated hardware device. Software-based solutions consume extra CPU cycles, thus resulting in poor performance. Also, these require to expose a device-model to the guest, thus increasing the attack surface. Conversely, hardware passthrough provides better performance and security but can be expensive in terms of the number of physical resources, since each device is dedicated to a single VM. This talk focuses on how Vates is working on sharing hardware resources among VMs by relying on dedicated processors named Data Processing Units (DPU). More precisely, Vates work on offloading Xen hypervisor of storage emulation by relying on Kalray K200 DPU PCIe controllers, a hardware accelerator based on MPPA architecture.

Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.

6. What’s Backroll ?
What prompted us to create BackROLL
• No similar open-source community project
• No turnkey solution available
• No KVM backup software yet integrated into Apache CloudStack
• You may have noticed that we are KVM/CloudStack enthusiasts :)
What we wanted
• No agent to install on virtual machines nor on hosts
• Quiescent backup support
• Backup deduplication
• Incremental backups
• Fully integrated into CloudStack
Already proven safeguards
• Currently in production for all internal and customer Apache Cloudstack instances at DIMSI
• Has already been used for client requests for data restoration
• Used to build our disaster recovery plan
• No performance impact during backups
Open Source with Apache2 license
• The same licensing model as Apache Cloudstack
• Everyone can check source code and bring their ideas to improve the software
Aiming at becoming a community driven project !
8. The various components of BackROLL
Modern web UI
• Front-end
The web UI, offers the same functionality as the API
• Back-end
Contains API and core logic, it receives all API calls that will trigger tasks (Celery)
• Workers
Used to run the Celery tasks (VM list, backup list, host list, backup job, and so on...), can be stand-alone or clustered to
maximize task parallelization
• Flower
Flower is used to monitor tasks in real-time and get logs via web interface / web API
• Beat
Beat is the scheduler, allowing us to create scheduled backup policies and run redundant and automated tasks (like backup
cleaning every night)
• Redis
Redis is used as a database to store keys specific for every task, allowing tracking and keeping records.
9. Bring an easy-to-use KVM backup solution to the community
1. Modern web UI
Designed to be easy to use
Easily manage your backups
§ Easily track the progress and logs of your backup tasks
§ Manage virtual machine backups, pools or backup policies via a
graphical interface
§ Schedule backup and restore tasks
§ Built in VueJS 3
The web interface is optional, but still convenient for non-tech users
2. RESTful API
That follows best practices
Can be used in your existing workflows
§ Stateless
§ Uniform interface
§ Layered system
§ Can be used with scripts or tools like Ansible
The learning curve is minimal if you are already used to working with
other REST APIs
3. Containerized application
Reduces maintenance requirements
§ Deploy and update using a docker-compose template
§ One click deployment
§ Customize deployment template to meet your needs
Reduce maintenance hassle as everything needed is embedded in the
docker image
13. What you can already do
A sample of what BackROLL is capable of
Instant start of backup or restore task of a VM / Pool
Everything is handled in the background
Nothing to do on the VM side, even the needed restart is handled by BackROLL
Backup / restore task scheduling
If you prefer to schedule your tasks to run at night, it is possible!
Self-management of lock for each VM, no way to go wrong
Whenever a VM is linked to a task, BackROLL locks out any further operations on the virtual machine
Retention management and automatic cleaning
Only keep data you need
Operation history and webhook notification
To keep track of what has been done
14. Caveats and limitations
For a better understanding
• It is not currently possible to backup a shutdown VM that is managed by cloudstack
• Restore and redeploy (to another VMs) task is currently in work-in-progress state
• Only supports Slack for webhook notifications
• Only NFS storage has been used to store the backups
• You cannot select a specific disk you'd like to backup / restore, current task state is all-or-nothing
• You cannot backup a VM that is currently using a snapshot disk file
• Integration of BackROLL within CloudStack is in work-in-progress state
15. Integration within your workflow
