The approach assumes language learning involves habit formation through stimulus-response-reinforcement, and that there is cross-linguistic influence where the L1 structure can help or hinder proper use of the L2 structure. While contrastive analysis can predict potential problems, it does not always accurately explain learner abilities or all problems encountered.

Allophones are variations in how a phoneme can be pronounced that do not change a word's meaning, like the "p" sound in "pin" and "spin". Minimal pairs are words that differ by only one phoneme, such as "tight" and "fight".

Consonants are sounds produced with an obstruction in the oral cavity. They have three features: place of articulation, manner of articulation, and voicing. English has 25 consonant sounds that are distinct from each other based on these features, while Urdu has 28 consonant sounds according to the presented table.
