Declaration of Alma-Ata: International Conference on Primary Health Care,
Alma-Ata, USSR, 6-12 September, 1978
The Conference strongly reaffirms that health, which is a state of complete
physical, mental and social wellbeing, and not merely the absence of
disease or infirmity, is a fundamental human right and that the attainment
of the highest possible level of health is a most important world-wide social
goal………

wÉÎQèuÉkÉ: rÉjÉÉ |
1 Year = 2 Ayanas
1 Ayana = 3 Ritu
1 Ritu = 2 Masa
17. RITUCHARYA
It’s a method which helps the body to adopt
gradually to the changes taking place in the
seasons.
But today we see a lot variations in the
occurrence of ritu i.e ritu vikruti.
In case of ritu vikruti one can cautiously adopt
the pathyatama ahara.
26. Getting up in morning
“Early to bed and early to rise,
makes a man healthy, wealthy and
wise.”
27. Brahma = Wisdom
• Brahma muhurta is defined as the special time, which is
auspicious for waking up in the morning. According to
Ayurveda, the time between 04:24 A.M. to 05:11 A.M. is
known as the Brahma muhurta. It is considered the favorable
time for Braham Gyan.
• the word Brahm refers to Brahmi or Sarswati, the Goddess of
Knowledge. For this reason, since ancient times young
students were taught the Vedas early in the morning.
28. • In the Rig-Veda, 1/125/1, it is said: Those, who get up
before sunrise are endowed with good health, The wise
never let this time go waste. Those who rise early are
robust, healthy, strong, brave and long-lived.
• Brahma Muhurta means the time of the creator. You can
look at it this way: it is the time when you can create
yourself. You become the Brahman in the morning, so you
can make yourself the way you want yourself to be.
30. One ‘Muhurta’ if considered as of 48 minutes
approximately, the 14th muhurta of ratri is called as
Brahmi muhurta. The Ratri extends up to another
muhurta i.e, the last (15th) muhurta, so totally 96
minutes before sun-rise. The ratri ends at sun-rise.
31. • But how could a simple activity of waking up early
give us health, wealth and wisdom all at once?!
• “Creating Health”: Waking up early gives us sufficient
time to practice the daily routine activities mentioned
under Dinacharya for prevention of ailments and
curing them which in turn promotes health and
prolongs lifespan.
• “Creating Wealth”: Predominant of Vata Dosha the
body, mind & intellect are light and active during this
time which sparks creativity, enhances one’s efficiency
at work and thereby helps in generating more wealth.
32. • “Creating Wisdom”: Being the time of Brahma or
Gyana (knowledge), the mental functions of
attention, concentration, retention and memory
are at their peak during this time making it apt for
perceiving knowledge and becoming wiser.
• Period of Brahmi Muhurta is an intermittent
duration between respiration and photosynthesis.
• Liberation of nascent oxygen which easily mixes
with hemoglobin forming oxy-haemoglobin
reaching to the remote tissues
33. • A circadian rhythm (pron.: /sɜrˈkeɪdiən/) is any biological
process that displays
an endogenous, entrainable oscillation of about 24 hours.
• The term circadian comes from the Latin circa, meaning
"around" (or "approximately"), and diem or dies, meaning
"day".
• Although circadian rhythms are endogenous ("built-in",
self-sustained), they are adjusted (entrained) to the local
environment by external cues called zeitgebers,
commonly the most important of which is daylight.
34. • from "larks", "morning people", who prefer to
sleep and wake early, to "owls", "evening
people" or "night people", who prefer to sleep
and wake at late times.
• Recently, clock genes were identified as the
genes that ultimately control a vast array of 24 hr
rhythms in physiology and behaviour.
35. Scientific perspective
• The entire body is in a certain conducive atmosphere, and
there is a natural secretion of melatonin, which is a
secretion of the pineal gland, is secreted at its maximum
during Brahma Muhurta.
• In modern medicine, melatonin is seen as a mood
stabilizer. And it happens naturally during Brahma
Muhurta.
36. Tuning our biological clock to the rising and setting
of the sun, is the best way for reversing the aging
process.
Waking up during this brahma muhurta puts us in
perfect synchronization to the natural clock.
It ensures the harmony of Doshas.
37. Research
In a recent study of 90,000 people they discovered links
between the genetic make-up and the genes connected to
body weight.
Early risers generally have a lower BMI (body mass index)
and consequently are less likely to suffer from obesity.
The earlier you get up the less likely you are to develop
diabetes, or suffer from depression or insomnia.
39. • Ayurveda suggests to wake up before sunrise and
initiate the day by elimination of body wastes and
cleaning of body apertures after carefully
analyzing one’s own body.
• Accumulation of waste in the body forms a bases
for attack by micro-organisms and generation of
toxins.
• Thus, their elimination through urine and faeces
along with cleansing of 9 major body apertures
(eyes, ears, nostrils, mouth, genital and anal
region), hands and feet; becomes primarily
important for prevention and cure of diseases.
40. • Practicing shauchavidhi on a daily basis and
making it a part of one’s lifestyle has the
following set of benefits:
• Medhyam – Enhances intellect
• Pavitram – Promotes purity
• Ayushyam – Prolongs lifespan
• Alakshmi nashanam – Destroys impoverishment
• Kali nashanam – Eradicates illness
• So, irrespective of how busy you are remember to
keep hygiene on the top of your priority list.
42. Introduction
Mouth, the first portion of our digestive system which
receives food and produces saliva. It is also
undoubtedly a victim of attack by microorganisms.
Oral problems can start with a bad breath and
gradually worsen into dental caries, gingivitis etc and
become a risk factor for serious systemic diseases.
- Hence, oral hygiene becomes inevitable for the
maintenance of proper health.
43. • After elimination of urine and feces before bathing, a
person should clean their teeth with the tastes of
astringent, bitter and pungent
• To Understand in a better way, sweet taste is anabolic. It
means it grows tissue. You eat a lot of sweets and you
grow. Excess sweet rots teeth, we all understand that.
What are the taste of the toothpastes in the market?
Sweet.
• And in the far past when you were a kid what were they?
The further back you go the more you find what works
and the closer to today you come it is about selling a
product so toothpastes are made sweet.
• It is one of the main reasons why we see such a huge
frequency of gum disease in the West.
44. Bodaka kapha is the saliva, the mouth is one of the
homes to kapha. The focus of the teeth and mouth
treatments routinely, in Ayurveda, balance kapha
unless there is a individuals problem to be
treated. Pungent, Bitter, and Astringent do this and a
lot more for the gums and teeth.
45. Pungent
Digestion, cleanses mouth, – moisture, opens
channels, scraping, specifically cleanses
mouth, alleviates swelling, kills organisms
V+ P- K-
Bitter
Gives taste, digest toxins, cleanses tissues
moisture sweat urine stool, worms and
parasites, dries moisture and fat, easily
digestible, Specifically provides firmness to
skin and muscles, gives rise to non-
sliminess and dryness in mouth V+P- K-
Astringent
Cleanses blood, dries moisture and fat, Stops
flow, wound healing, size, scraping,
absorption, not easily
digestible,specifically union
promoting, compressing, healing, absorbing
V+P- K-
46. • Benefits: removes foul smell, tastelessness and
taking out dirt brings relish immediately.
• The toothbrush: Use astringent, pungent, and
bitter taste teeth cleaning twigs for brushing the
teeth.
• A fresh twig is made into a toothbrush
by chewing the end so as to create a frayed,
fibrous brush free from splinters.
• Plants recommended for toothbrush: “karanja,
karavira, arka, jati, kakubha, asana and
similar plants” (Charaka Samhita Su. 5/71-74)
47. Chewing on these stems is believed to cause grinding
down and leveling of biting surfaces, facilitate salivary
secretion and possibly, help in plaque control while
some stems have an anti-bacterial action.
Present-day research has shown that all the chewing
sticks described in ancient Avurveda texts (Circa 200
BC) have medicinal and anti-cariogenic properties.
48. Comparison b/w Dantadhavana Dravya
& Tooth paste
Tooth paste contains calcium phoshate dihydrate, chalk,
alumina-40%. These acts as abrasive
Glycerine 20% - moisturizer
Sodium laryll sulphate-1.5%
Sodium carboxy-methyl –whiteness to teeth
Cellulose –sweetness
Fluoride in form of HCL
49. Children > 7 yrs. should not be allowed
to use fluoride tooth paste.
Fluoride can lead to degeneration of bones and teeth
Fluoride has a cumulative effect, ones consumed it
cannot be excreted. Population subjected to excess
fluorine in drinking water over a period of time will
suffer from ORAL Disorders
50. Jihva Nirleka
Benefits:
• It stimulates taste perception & increases the
salivation (saliva contains Ptylin, lysosome, which
acts as bacteriosidal).
• Due to increased salivation gastrointestinal
secretions.
• threshold level of the basic taste perception.
• stimulation levels of unconditioned reflex in
cephalic phase for gastric secretion. Hence
appetite & also proper digestion.
• Impact on the organs like liver, kidney, spleen, etc.
51. • Removes bad odor (halitosis).
• Improves the sense of taste,
• stimulate the secretion of digestive enzymes.
• Removes millions of bacteria growth (approximately
500 varieties)
Clinical evidence also shows that use of tongue
scrapers on a regular basis, has a significant
Improvement on eliminating anaerobic bacteria and
decreases bad odor.
53. Eyes form the most important sense organ and
beauty spot of the body. Not only do they
provide us with a sense of vision but also are a
mirror of the soul and a window to our
emotions.
It thus becomes essential to protect eyes from
any harm and constantly work towards
enhancing their functions.
54. So, what is it that we can do in our daily
routine to ensure proper functioning of eyes?
Out of the five elements, eyes are predominant
of agni mahabhuta (fire) and are susceptible to
be afflicted by diseases of kapha
dosha which possesses qualities opposite to that
of agni. Letting out of kapha is thus paramount
in maintaining the health of eyes; which can be
achieved through collyrium application.
55. Anjana / Collyrium, presently understood as
only eye makeup has virtues which go much
beyond beautification of eyes.
Acharya Charaka has explained this using a
simile. Just like oil, cloth or brush are used for
cleaning of gold, silver etc; similarly anjana,
aschotana etc make eyes clean and bright like
the moon.
56. Thus, Anjana prepared using traditional techniques, if
used daily has the following benefits:
• Pleasing to the eyes
• Promotes the growth of eyelashes making them thick and
unctuous
• Enhances color differentiation
• Cleanses the eyes
• Makes eyes beautiful
• Provides sharp vision / Improves vision
59. Why to follow the charya??
• Preventive - valiphalithakhlithyavyanga asmbhava
• Pramotive -
–Strengthen- (increases bala of
hanudantashirogriva)
–Sensory perception- (vimalyam of indriyas)
• Curative (shyamati naranamurdhwajatruja)
–Bactrricidal
60. • Strong & firm shoulder, neck, face &
chest, which are good looking.
• Pleasant smell from mouth.
• Pleasant voice.
• Healthy sense organs etc.
• May help for coping up with Air
pollution
61. • It stimulates the CNS which performs the normal
physiological functions throughout the body.
• The taila in Nasya will increases stickiness of mucous
hence filtering more of dust particles.
• Venous drainage of nose is in cavernous sinus. This is
having emissary veins, which also drain from the
brain. Hence, the potency of the drug which is present
in the oil can act on brain through cavernous sinus.
62. Rutu & Nasya
• Sharat & Vasanta - Purvahna
• Hemanta & Shishira - Madhyna
• Grishma - Sayankala
• Varsha - Adurdina
• TAILA is best in Swastha
64. GANDUSHA & KAVALA
• Holding the drug in mouth without any movement is
Gandusha.
• Holding the drug in mouth with movements is Kavala.
Drugs:
• Ksheerivriksha kashaya
• Tilakalkodaka
• Nitya gandusha: Taila & Mamsarasa
65. Benefits of Kavala
• Cleanses oral cavity
• Strengthens facial muscles
• Oral mucous membrane has capacity to absorb the lipid
soluble drugs hence the lipid soluble constituents
present in kavala & gandusha gets absorbed.
• By doing kavala there will be proper movements of the
jaw and facial muscles which helps for speech &
mastification.
66. Oil pulling is a procedure that involves swishing oil in
the mouth for oral and systemic health benefits. It is
mentioned in the Samhitas and is claimed to cure many
diseases.
Oil pulling prevents decay of teeth, oral malodor,
bleeding gums, dryness of throat, cracked lips and for
strengthening teeth, gums and the jaw.
Oil pulling therapy is very effective against plaque
induced gingivitis both in the clinical and
microbiological assessment.
68. Dhumapana
• Drugs: Priyangu, Chandana, Madhuka, Jatamamsi,
Guggulu etc.
Benefits
• Drugs like Jatamamsi have sangna sthapana
prabhava
• Co2 liberated will stimulates for the respiratory
center in brain stem.
• Disinfective action in the URT & oropharynx
72. Sl Name of
procedure

74. 3 pillars of life
Trayopasthamba – Ahara, Nidra & Brahmacharya
75. 75
Importance of Aahaar (diet)
• Of the three pillars of health, aahaar or diet is
the most important, and that is why it is
mentioned first
• Of all the factors that are responsible for the
growth and development of the human body,
diet is the most important.
(Ch. Sh. 6/12)
76. 76
Hitaahaar (Beneficial or conducive diet)
Hitaahaar:
• Is panchbhautik (made up of 5 components – Earth, Water,
Fire, Air, Space), because every individual is panchbhautik
• Has shadras (6 tastes), or has all or most of them or has rasas
according to prakruti (body type)
• Is liked by the one eating
• Is clean and pure
• Not very hot
• Has been freshly prepared
(Ch. Soo. 25/33)(Su. Soo. 46/465)
77. 77
Importance of hitaahaar (conducive diet)
• It is only hitaahaar that is solely responsible for
shareer vriddhi (growth and development of the
body) and maintenance of health. On the contrary,
ahitaahaar (inconducive diet) is responsible for
disease development.
• Although there are other factors in the development
of the body, aahaar is the most important
(Ch. Soo. 25/33)
78. 78
Rules for the one eating:
• Should be hungry
• Should sit straight on a slightly elevated seat
• Should eat in silence focusing on the food
• Should eat not too fast, nor too slow, chewing many
times before swallowing
• Should rinse mouth when changing rasa
• Should drink sips of water in between meals
• Should floss with herb twig or silver/brass wire, after
meals
(Su. Soo. 46/471, 489)
Fundamentals and rules of Aahaar (cont’d)
79. 79
Rules for the one eating: Do not eat –
• Before or after meal time
• Less or more
• Contaminated, uncovered, spoilt, burnt food.
• Left over food

smells bad
• Food that has not been cooked properly
• Food that has been reheated, was cooked long time
back or is very cold.
Fundamentals and rules of Aahaar (cont’d)
80. 80
Rule for optimum serving:
• According to one’s agni (digestive fire)
• Conducive to one’s doshic prakruti (body type
according to dosha)
• That which gets digested in time
(Ch. Soo. 5/1-4)
Fundamentals and rules of Aahaar (cont’d)
81. 81
Qualitative assessment:
• Assessing the gurutva/laghutva of the diet:
- One must evaluate whether the food is guru (heavy) (milk
products like curd, cream, etc., red meat, meat of
animals of marshy or wetlands, sesame seeds, etc.) in
terms of digestion,
- Or laghu (light) – moong daal (green gram), red rice, bird
meat, deer meat, etc.
• Assessing the rasas of the diet:
- A shadras diet is highly advocated.
(Ch. Soo. 5/5-6)
Fundamentals and rules of Aahaar (cont’d)
82. 82
Quantitative assessment:
• Fill the first 1/2 of stomach with solid diet, guru diet
taken first, followed by laghu diet; but if diet is very
heavy, fill only 1/3rd of the stomach with solids
• Fill the next quarter or third with anupaan
(adjuvant).
• Leave the rest quarter or one third space for action
of different doshas
(Ch. Soo. 5/7)(Ch. Vi. 2/4)(As. Hr. Soo. 8/46)
Fundamentals and rules of Aahaar (cont’d)
83. 83
Other Rules:
• Eat solids first
• Eat the highly beneficial amalaki (gooseberries) in
the beginning, middle and end of meal
• Eat salad in the beginning of the meal
• Meals should be taken in a timely manner or when
hungry.
• Meals should be taken in the right amount, neither
too much nor too less.
(Su. Soo. 46/468-470)
Fundamentals and rules of Aahaar (cont’d)
84. 84
After Meals Regimen:
• Sit straight for 5-10 minutes, waiting for food to
settle down
• At this time, smoke herbal cigars or hookah and/or
chew beetle leaf or other mouth fresheners
• After that, take a stroll (about 100 steps)
• After dinner, do the above and then lie down on your
left side.
• Surround oneself with pleasantness
Fundamentals and rules of Aahaar (cont’d)
85. 85
Avoid after meals:
• Sleep or sit for a long time
• Laugh or talk excessively
• Avoid unpleasant sensory exposure
• Consume large amount of fluids
• Excessive physical activity like swimming, horse
riding, etc.
(Su. Soo. 46/495-496)
Fundamentals and rules of Aahaar (cont’d)
