“DynamoDB Starter”
DynamoDB
● What is it?
● How does it work?
● RCU’s and WCU’s
● Partitions
● Indexes
● Newer Features
● Best Practice
DynamoDB
● NoSQL Database (non
relational)
● Highly Available
● Fully managed
● Consistent single digit
millisecond latency at any scale
● Secure - fine grained access
control
● Integrates with Lambda,
Redshift and more
DynamoDB
Made up of
● Tables
● Items
● Attributes
● Primay Key
● Sort Key (optional)
● Indexes
● Is Schemaless
DynamoDB
DynamoDB is regional
● Replicated across AZ’s
● Reads are either eventual consistency or
strongly consistent
● Scaling is done through partitioning
(managed by AWS)
● Limit of 10 Gb per partition
● Limit of 3000 RCU per partition
● Limit of 1000 WCU per partition
Pricing - Capacity Units/Storage
There are two elements to pricing
Data Storage and Read/Write Capacity Units
● 1 RCU 4kb per second - strongly consistent
● 1 RCU 2 x 4kb per second - eventually consistent
● 1 WCU 1kb per second.
Partitions
Newer Features
● Autoscaling
● VPC Endpoints
● Dax - in memory performance
● TTL - delete on timestamp
● Encryption at rest
● Adaptive capacity
● Point in time restore
● OnDemand backup/restore
● Global tables
● Migrate with DMS
● Reserved Capacity
● Streams
SQL vs NoSQL Design
● In RDBMS, you design for flexibility without worrying about
implementation details or performance. Query optimization
generally doesn't affect schema design, but normalization is
very important.
● In DynamoDB, you design your schema specifically to make
the most common and important queries as fast and as
inexpensive as possible. Your data structures are tailored to
the specific requirements of your business use cases.
NoSQL Best Practice
● You shouldn't start designing your schema until you know the
questions it will need to answer. Understanding the business
problems and the application use cases up front is essential.
● You should maintain as few tables as possible in a DynamoDB
application. Most well designed applications require only one
table.
● Keep related data together, Use sort order, Distribute queries,
Use global secondary indexes
Indexes LSI/GSI
